  • The two concrete tunnels were joined at a later date and the wooden tunnels in the corkscrew were also a later addition.

  • GREAT video of the ride sometime before the official opening. The last time I road "The Beast" (summer 2011) it felt smoother than some previous years. Obviously, work has been done on the ride over the years. Hopefully this ride will be around for the rest of MY lifetime... it's a CLASSIC!!

  • Where did they get a video this old? I mean back then the camcorders were as big as your torso and yeah this is old.

From the video The Beast looks slow

  • @Lesrevesdhiver All roller coasters look slower than they actually are when on video.

  • Awwww! It's when our sweet baby Beast was a NEWBORN!! I could see construction debris and the logo wasn't even on the front yet and half the cars were YELLOW! Wow!! Great video!

  • i'm guessing a test run before construction concluded. I know for a fact The Beast opened in April, 1979. The final helix isn't enclosed (don't know if it's always been enclosed) and after the break run about 1/3 into the ride, there's a tunnel that's missing. Amazing video!!

  • it looks like an old clip

  • If you look at the video, it doesn't even look like the metal track has been laid. It looks like it is just running on the wooden track bed. I know this is just due to the age of the video. watch the video as it is climbing the lift hill.

  • Still the Longest, Baddest Wooden rollercoaster of all time!!

  • April -1977 to br exact!

  • looooong ride.....cool

  • why r the trains so weird

  • @camthegatorfan 8 people per car, I though that is what I counted.

  • really old vid. the second tunnel is not complete asnd not near as many trees.

  • My Favorite ride EVER

  • LOL, people on the newer videos are saying that the ride is slower now, but it was obviously way slower back when it opened. Maybe it's just because the car wasn't full and therefore didn't have as much momentum.

  • This ride used to be slow as fuck apparently.

  • I was on the 2nd ride after it opened way back when. I thought then it was pretty fast and brutal (6 inch bruises). Later it got a lot faster. I haven't riden it in several years though. If you're lucky enough, catch it on a rainy day. It'll take your breath away

  • i remember this ride when it was at six flags astroland, ahh the memories

  • @FunAndOnly Uh Six Flags? Beast was never at Six Flags..

  • @kifaeriewench yes it was dumbass go kill urself

  • @FunAndOnly Wow grow up

  • @sheba627 no u

  • @FunAndOnly Looking at your Youtube, you seem pretty hateful and extremely immature. Really need to look into getting some help for yourself.

  • @sheba627 no u

  • @FunAndOnly Oh wow can't even type a full response like a real adult. You must be a tweenie.

  • @sheba627 lmfao i dont type a full response because you dont deserve it, you useless fucking piece of shit

  • @FunAndOnly When someone types a response like with poor grammar, typically means the person is illiterate.

See I'm the grown up, I don't have to cuss :)

  • @sheba627 no u dont have to cuss. instead u have to be gay so go die

  • @Gurufail And proud to be!

  • @sheba627 go die douchefag

  • @sheba627 Yes, you're definitely the grown up. You pick fights on youtube and pretend that it isn't your fault. And on top of that, you're so fucking pathetic, your only insult is criticizing my grammar. Get the fuck off YouTube, it isn't for pathetic little shits like you.

  • @FunAndOnly Wow you just summed yourself up pretty good there! I'm impressed.

  • @sheba627 The fact that you responded to this so quickly is very sad. Get a life you no-life piece of shit.

  • @FunAndOnly Ah and what about you and your minions? I so can't wait until the KIC people find your comments on their videos.

  • @sheba627 Hah, I think you're jealous that I actually have friends. Not only do you fail at having friends in real life, but you can't even make a friend on the internet! How pathetic.

  • @FunAndOnly You'd be surprised.

  • @sheba627 I would be surprised? By what? At how pathetic and ugly you are?

  • @FunAndOnly lmao

  • @sheba627 Keep laughing, probably don't get to do that too often since your life is so pathetic and depressing.

  • @kifaeriewench yeha it was known as Thee Beast when it was there

  • this video makes the beast look slow!! when i went it was the most intense ride ive ever been on!

  • This is unbelievably old. I have a kinda obsession with roller coasters. The Beast being one of my favorites. I love this piece of history. To bad they closed down The Son of Beast. Faulty wood, Fuck!

  • it better not!

  • Wow this has to be before they finished building the tunnels back in 79. Great footage.

  • @bhollon75

The helix wasn't enclosed in a "tunnel" until at least 1980, although the upper track had a roof. The 2 concrete tunnels after the straight braking section were separate until at least 1980 as well, then were connected by a wooden "tunnel".

  • I got to ride Beast without the tunnels on the second lift, like in this video and I loved these old trains that they used to run. Is it just me or does The Beast look like it had a more maroon/red "look" to it, than the dark brown that it is now. It may just be me, I'm not sure. Anyone have an opinion on this?

  • Worst ride ever built. Way too rough.

  • I remember when there was water and fish under the platform. It was cool until the GP started fn it up with trash and spit. It never ceases to amaze me how awesome this ride still looks and runs considering it's age. You can see some wood has been replaced (and reinforced) but nothing like the piece of crap woodies some other parks have *cough* Mean Streak *cough* I love the Beast!!

  • It's so barren... Where's the backround? Vortex D: D:

  • very cool to see how between 2:25-2:30 they connected the two tunnels with a wooden tunnel.

  • what coaster is at 4:49?

  • @ChophouseProductions That is Kenton's Cove Keelboat Canal (1973-2001), a log flume that was located on the plot of land where The Crypt now sits.

  • I beleve that that's the old Top Gun. I'ts called flight deck now... It might be the bat... I'm not sure, but i know it's an inverted coaster. I haven't been there for years now, I'm going on Friday so I might see it.

  • thers alot more trees now than back in 1979. (rode in 2009) and my dad says it goes faster than it did before

  • it is alot faster now i rode in 2009 and when i saw this it is way faster now.

  • that ride is so stupid look in my opinion it needs steaper hills and needs to go alot faster

  • and for the record it was built in 1979 so that was a unbeliveable drop angle and a amazing length(still longest wooden coaster in the world i think) and speed was blistering for 1979 so shut the fuck up unless u know what ur talking about

  • You need to stop getting so offensive about people's opinions, if you can share yours, like you did up there, then he has a right to share his, like i have a right to share mine.

  • True. No hills at all.

  • it doesn't need hills for 1979 ride, best wooden in the world very fast, you have to ride it then you'll change your mind trust me... i go there every year.

  • i know. i have a gold pass. i go at least twice a week. i love it. it would'be been nice though like if they added bunny hills you know? i love the ride. i get so scared when you tilt going into the tunnel xD

  • lol bunny hills? and that part is the best part vvery fast thru the tunnels

  • like, bunny hills? ever heard of that? like.. uh, when you go up & down hills constantly for like 3 or 4 hills. look at the racer, those are bunny hills! omggg i can't wait till april 17th, i'll be there opening day i love kings island. D: i hope they make a suspended roller coaster 2011.

  • @Crazywolf103 The best part is the 2nd lift hill through the double helix.

  • @xlilxsux0rz haha yeah that is the best part.

  • wheres the cave after the second drop

  • no cave? theres a cave at the first drop going down, and like, abbove the brakes, and the turns and the helix.

  • this is prolly from a long tme ago because i see no vortex

  • This was from 1979, when Beast debuted as the biggest, baddest, longest, and fastest coaster in the world.

Vortex wouldn't come until 8 years later.

  • the hole time i was on that rollar coaster i was doing no handers!!!!!!!!!

  • dude this is way faster than it is in the video

  • this is like a test i think, when theres more people in the car it goes faster.

  • It goes faster when there's people in it.

  • fat ppl + cart + gravity = faster

  • lol too muhc trim for a teast run. Glad this wasn't what riders ACTUALLY got when it opened

i know this vid isn 't as fats as it is even now, and my dad has told time and time again that it was much faster when it was first opened

  • Vintage

  • at 0:31 there was stupid other tracks on the sie it looked like they tested it in africa did u c the groung and the color of the beast that was a bid color hete this vid

  • english...

  • @ 3:42 you can clearly see this was filmed back when the ride was new, you dont see any of the coasters in the park BECAUSE they wernt built yet!

  • OH MY GOD!! you're right. Plus, if you notice, the tunnels weren't even completed and built. The trees are small as hell too. This is actually a rare vid

  • YES TY! The Helix Tunnels are cool to see new!! Its so smooth too I LOVE the way the tracks and cars sound new!

  • @JK47Tubing

The wooden "tunnel" connecting the 2 short concrete tunnels mid-course and the "tunnel" of the helix weren't there during the first season in 1979. If my memory serves me, they were present by 1980.

  • is this smooth

  • no! lol

  • haha fuck no i was on it last night and it was bumpy as hell

  • it was smooth back in the day, but the last seat last car is a killer lol I wonder why i still choose the last seat everytime lol

  • is the front smooth

  • nothing as bad as the back. The track is showing its age, but the main reason its so bad in the back , the last cars of the train always get pulled around the track, the front cars are almost pushed. Thats why the back is always so dam fun, its getting whiped around. The worst part imo is @ 2:46-2:48 in the last car, your hips can get bruised lol no joke.

  • Comment removed

  • cuz u gotta test things XD i would assume they dont want any accidents so they can avoida lawsuit .

  • because this video is old as shit , you can see its a brand new coaster, the water is still around the thing. Dumbass

  • shut up bitch

  • yeh im sorry that you cannot tell how old the video is and how new the ride is.

  • This is the oldest wooden roller coaster ever dumb ass

  • Im talking about the video, you need to learn to read or does your mother do that for you? When this video was filmed (if you open your eyes) you can see its brand new. Iv been riding this thing since i was just tall enough to get on it. And actually its NOT the oldest wooden roller coaster dumbass, they were making them way wya wya before this one. HAHA you think this is the oldest?? The Jack Rabbit in New Jersey was built in 1919. haha retard.

  • and if you do a little reading (if you know how) on the first coasters and their history you may learn a few things.

  • they have to test run all the rides every day before they open and the son of the beast takes about 4 hours becuz they have to check all of the wood and make sure its in place

  • Always looks so slow on video. Even tho it's not. Great video tho!

  • Its a bit slower than usual in this vid. The seconds before going up the second drop hill you can tell. It usually throws you almost to the bottom of the drop hill , this one just coasted there.

  • yeah it must be cus u see workers on the track in the middle of the ride and the cars dont have seats there filled with weights

  • its possible that it was a test before the ride was opend completely maybe they were testing it wen it was new i dont know

  • wow this is old theres no vortex

  • I just noticed that.

  • So it originally had only 4 cars per train?

  • Did they take out the last two tunnels????!?!?

  • Tunnels were added later, still under construction.

  • this ride better not be closed when I go!

  • LOL.. this is VERY old footage from the looks of it.

  • I know it is old footage.

  • ʍoʍ

  • o nevermind this is before vortex...lol

  • dude this sucks i think vortex is gone :(

  • oh after further view this video still just has the skid breaks... they weren't obtrusive like the new ones they added...... those actually throw you forward in your seat it's terrible

  • I emailed the park last year and basically chewed them out for ruining this ride with all those damn magnetic trim breaks..... and i wonder why the Beast is falling in all the annual coaster polls????

  • Good for you! Those trims were never nearly that aggressive or basically non-existent before Cedar Fair took ownership.. not saying that its CF's fault.. but it is kind of.. i <3 CF though

  • My God is this thing trimmed to hell...

  • no joke. it's depressing me to see this monster look like such a baby.

  • first rollercoaser i wet on when i was 6

  • stupid question.

how do the ppl know if a train gets stuck on the second lift hill?

  • Cameras, sensors, things like that.

  • There are three people, one with a hard hat on in 2:13 what is that

  • i like son of beast better

  • What are those things on the sides at 2:13? They look like tires...

  • I am pretty sure they are kicker tires. I suppose when the weather is harsher, the train runs slower so they installed them to give it a boost on slow days. That's just my two cents.

  • yeah this is when the cars were designed like benches instead of individual seats.

  • yeah, this was taken before The Vortex, but no Bat,so probably around 1983,84,85.look at its cars, their so Different!!

  • no it it was in 1979 because the tunnel on the helix was added in 1980

  • wtf! I've rode this numerous times and I don't remember seeing those two guys at 2:12 on the tracks at all...I'll look for 'em next time....

  • This was taken a LONG time ago dude.

  • there are 3 dudes

  • Oh yeah. When was this taken? Scenery looks way different and the tunnel isn't there.

  • Just a guess... probably either fall of 1978 or early spring 1979. The Beast opened on April 13, 1979, so that's what I'm guessing off of.

  • @Dreadlord67

Early spring of 1979 before its first full season. The tunnels on the helix and between the 2 short concrete tunnels didn't appear until at least 1980.

  • Gotta love this ride. can't wait for Diamondback. What are the official rules on being the first to ride it? Am I able to camp out in front of the park? Or get there as early as I want? Is it a race to the ride? Also, I was there on the 1st, lol, and Nick lachey like pulled up while I was in line for this and I was like OMG!!! Lol.

  • Woot KICentral FTW

  • First Comment! This ride is genius!
