  • What year was this?

  • Wow, heard them last night on their American tour. They're hot, and this plainsong chanting is fabulous. Only wish they were singing Coverdale, but it's still tops. If you've got fly, fly first class!!!!!!!!!

  • Very nice!

  • @tensorbundle Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.

  • @tensorbundle Are you kidding me? "...they store them in their brains." I certainly had a good laugh at that. Are you aware of the following men believing in God? Here there are: Nicholas Copernicus, Sir Francis Bacon, Johannes Kepler, Galileo Galilei, Rene Descartes, Francis Bacon, Isaac Newton, Robert Boyle, Michael Faraday, Gregor Mendel, William Thomson Kelvin, Max Planck and Albert Einstein.

  • @tensorbundle Please give us the name of a scientist who has the contents of an 823,000 word book memorized by heart. Oh, and better make it in archaic English. The text of this psalm comes from the King James version of the Bible, translated in the 17th Century in poetic, stylized language. Thanks, Bundle.

  • Exquisitely beautiful composition and singing.

  • it will be really nice if u can upload it with lyrics. so we can chant along. thanks once again for uploading. God bless U!

  • am lifted, i was so glad to find this thanks for uploading!

  • The words are at: bit DOT ly SLASH glXqlt

  • I'm quite lost here. Someone know the psalm lyrics?...

  • i,m muslim ... and this make me cry :(

  • I will not be much in the mix and things but, I see the Catholic Church is what finally organized by the Orthodox

  • It's not just the beauty of the music but the reverence with which they sing it. Divine!

    Thank you for uploading. :-)

  • This video made it on my "epic music" playlist because it's so good.

    Great job guys.

Wait, you said "remove button"? lame. don't do that.

  • ... this is beautiful ...

  • OK, this video remains very popular, so here's a treat:

    dl.dropbox.com/u/12596937/Westminster.divx

  • @cantorisdecani

The link does not work... :(

  • @Szpondt If you copy and paste that link, it puts a hyphen into the word Westminster - take it out.

  • @ioannes345 this is in a Catholic Church.

  • This is the grail version of psalm 38 (actually numbered 37 in the grail). The psalm is being sung in the Catholic way, which is single voiced. The Anglican tradition sings the psalms in four voices and uses a different translation.

O Lord do not rebuke me in your anger; do not punish me Lord in your rage . . . . .

  • @ioannes345 So is the westminster cathedral choir!

  • This is a true quest for the lord's message

  • Truly this makes my heart soar, at the same time I feel very reflective and meditative. Thanks for sharing.

  • This is actually from 1992/1993. My penultimate year in the choir.

  • FABULOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • what is the religious history behind the -choir robes-?

  • It was from an Easter Good Friday afternoon Vespers in 1993, which screened on Carlton television. 1 day before my baptism and confirmation at the Cathedral. I have it on video tape somewhere. Will 1 day convert to DVD format and upload. 1 day.

  • superb

  • this is so calming and very beautiful! Thanks so much for posting this.

  • is this in london cause my best friend left me 3 years ago and went to a choir boy school in victorea however u spell it

  • @bellableu23 : Yes it is, i was there, beautiful.

  • Was this taken from the time of Cardinal Hume (R.I.P.) or Cardinal O' Connor? Preety good chant, I must add.

  • Incredible! Have you got Lord's Prayer performed by this choir? I remember it was amazing...

  • Music such as this is so beautiful. I'm don't believe in a God, but I certainly enjoy the music made by those who do. This brings tears to my eyes and chills down my spine.

    Truly gorgeous.

  • Hmmm. So despite the fact that generally "...Catholics Can't Sing", when they're in direct competition with the Anglican church and its weighty choral tradition the Romans can muster the wherewithal to pull off a stunning act of choral prayer. One can only hope this will be part of Benedict's plan to co-opt disaffected Anglican! Soli Deo Gloria!

  • Is there a good clip of Psalm 23 set to Marosa (Bain), esp. the Gordon Jacob arrangement?

  • This is like Anglican music. The male voice choir structure is like a traditional Anglican choir. Even the appending of the Gloria is Anglican. I think they are singing in an Anglican style rather than their own style, right?

  • I agree, the music of the Holy Roman Catholic Church should be like this and stop the liturgical abuses!!!

  • this video is very exemplar... very good. the tranquility and beauty...

  • It was in this cathedral that drew up the Westminster Confession?

  • @micvpreaching

Hardly. The Westminster Confession existed long before this cathedral. Article 25 par 6 would be enough to show that it could not have come from this denomination. Barely half a century after the drafting of the Westminster Confession, which was accepted by the Church of Scotland but not by the Church of England, control orders had to be placed on the Church of Rome due to what were seen as its antinational stance. The orders were not fully withdrawn til 1829.

  • THIS SONG IS ADDICTIVE..

  • Para mim isso que é igreja de verdade

  • I'm so addicted to this video.

  • this i s my Fav video

  • thank you so very much for sharing this!

  • Wonderful! Helps to draw our thought to the spiritual...

  • Beautiful sound

  • Psalm 38

O LORD, do not rebuke me in your anger or discipline me in your wrath.

For your arrows have pierced me, and your hand has come down upon me.

Because of your wrath there is no health in my body; my bones have no soundness because of my sin.

My wounds fester and are loathsome because of my sinful folly.

My back is filled with searing pain; there is no health in my body

O LORD, do not forsake me; be not far from me, O my God.

Come quickly to help me, O Lord my Savior.

  • do you the video from the rest of the program? was this mass or vespers? If you do, you should definitely upload it!

  • Sadly, I don't have anything besides this.

  • @cantorisdecani : This is very attractive to the ear !

  • This was a Vespers, I suspect from the centenary year 1995 The 2 priests are George Stack (now Aux Bishop in Westminster) and Mark Langham who is in Rome as the Sec to the Pontifical Council for Xtian Unity.

1m and 15 s in the back row are (from the front) David Gould (CT), Andrew Carwood (T now DoM at St Paul's Cathedral), Clifford Lister (T), Rob Evans (B) Steven Alder (B). On the other side (2 mins 40) are Trevor Ling (B) Adrian Peacock (B), Nick Kaey (T) Matthew Vine (T) Angus Davidson CT

  • The only other place I've heard psalm tone chanting this good was about a mile away at All Saint's Margaret Street. This is even better...

  • PSALM 38

  • Which Psalm is it?

  • The Westminster Diocease is the only in the world with an indult to celebrate the 1965 Mass.

  • I know, isn't that absolutely wonderful!

  • @dacatholicbandorgan

But, now any priest can pray the Latin Mass, which is even more wonderful!

  • we can all pray the Latin Mass, Priests by ordination can celebrate the Latin Mass.

  • Thank you so much for the upload!!! Out of all the videos on YouTube, this is my absolute favorite! Everytime I hear it, it seems my heart would burst... the organ, the choir, the worship... it's all so beautiful! Thank you again and again!

  • Thanks for the MP3!

  • Oh wow... first time I have searched for my old choir! Former chorster 1980-1984!

  • Love this. I play it almost every morning as I'm getting ready for work, amongst other videos on here, especially if I'm in a hurry and don't have time to spare more than a minute or two in prayer. Thanks for sharing.

  • I'm getting fed up with some of the on-going content of the messages in this thread. If you're not about to write about the music or its relation to worship then you're in the wrong place.

I'm close to getting very active with the "Remove" button.

  • You should take a look at the litanies found on most of the Gregorian chant pages. Apparently a lot of people see videos with church music as excellent occasions to explode into rants against the Church itself. It just comes with the package, it seems. Worst case scenario, you could always disable comments of course. And the music is beautiful.

  • @cantorisdecani I agree with you cantor. I don't understand why some of these people are on here. All they do is criticize. If they don't like it go somewhere else. Although Anglican myself, thanks for the wonderful recording. I am proud of the similarities of the Roman and the English churches.

  • @cantorisdecani : This is an OK rendition of a psalm and is very interesting !

  • Nevertheless, it is amazing and line or no line, catholic or Catholic...this Psalm honors the God who calls us all through Christ Jesus. God bless Canterbury. God bless Rome.

  • The Bishop of Rome is the successor of Peter the Vicar of Christ on earth. That is what Christ intended for the Church. Stop distorting history my Protestant friend. The Papacy remains the crown jewel of Christianity. Its line was never broken and will remain till Christ's return at the end of times. Excellent work for Westminister Cathedral choir.

  • even now, the English still have something to show the world about the Christian faith....all I can say is WoW!!!!!!!!!!....

this and this alone is mucic worthy of being called "worship" of God almighty.

may all so called modern christian music die a quick yet horrible and painful death

  • This is the way Christian worship should be and I am pleased no end to see a Catholic Church that still does it. I bet this choir even sings some of the wonderful music of the ages in Latin. This Catholic is home on a Sunday morning because the local Catholic church is in the hands of the Philistines who sing crap, bang tambourines and wave their hands in the air . .and cant begin to approach the level of this glorious stuff.

  • thaichas, I am so much in agreement with you, I have several reasons some internal, some external, chief among my external reasons for no longer going to church is the jesus is my boyfriend crap music, apostate, heretical crap.

  • I believe in the Holy Ghost: The holy Catholick Church: The Communion of Saints: The Forgiveness of sins: The Resurrection of the body, And the life everlasting, Amen.

    The Book of Common Prayer.

Seems to me Hkepher there is many ango-catholics.

  • Anglicanism is very much Catholic very much Protestant and very much "Right On" doctrinally. Satan would love to dissolve Her. But, revival is coming Her way...thanks to the Pope. She is recognized as distant fellowship with Rome. Christ is glorified in Her.

  • Though I'm Protestant, and don't agree that it will be the Pope to revive the church, I do believe we, both Protestant and Catholic, are the Catholic Universal Church, and in Christ are brothers.

  • @foucachon - You are free to beleive anything. However, Protestants are rebels and are not part of the Church Jesus created. Prots are members of a man made assembly of one kind or another. Outside the Catholic Church, there is no salvation.

  • @390bullitt1968 religiousness is bondage christians around the word pray for your likes to know Jesus christ for who he is, love him and walk in his ways. and be free from bondage. Christ is calling you to a way of life, Acccept Jesus today and be saved. the christian way Jesus loves you.

  • @bmd4rill - If you are a member of any religion outside the Catholic Church, you are lost. Jesus created one faith , it is called the Catholic Church and those who belong to other faith traditions are rebels, as was lucifier.

  • Psalm 38 is a deep one!

1O Lord, rebuke me not in thy wrath: neither chasten me in thy hot displeasure. 2For thine arrows stick fast in me, and thy hand presseth me sore.

It's not catholic, it's church of England.

  • Westminster Cathedral is actually, to quote Wikipedia, "the mother church of the Roman Catholic community in England and Wales and the Metropolitan Church and Cathedral of the Archbishop of Westminster".

  • This music is really wonderfull!

    It's so amazing clear....

  • Emmzlee its not hauting... its spiritual!

  • Dostoevsky said, "Beauty will save the world." Thank you, emmzlee, for backing him up.

  • I am not religious but this music is so haunting it made me cry.

  • its beautiful.... makes me long to have something like this play in my native Mexico.

  • Westminster is the Primary Catholic church in England.....

  • is this a catholique, protestan or orthodox churche?

  • I think its anglican

  • This is not simply on my play list. It has become a part of my daily devotions. Meditate while hearing this music from God; love can be the only result. Thank you so much for posting. I'd love to hear more if you have access.

  • Amazing. Greetings from Germany.

  • Sacred music has an special effect while ist is being heard in a big church like this one and also with those spectacular voices and choir.

    Regards from Trujillo, Peru.

  • Sacred music at its core. Absolutely stunning. I am left speechless. By the By, does anyone know which translation of the Bible they are using?

  • No, but the translation of Psalm 38 used here is identical to that given on the following website: catholicityDOTcomSLASHprayerSLASHseven-penitential-psalms.html

  • Secondo modo gregoriano.

  • Beautiful! Beautiful! Beautiful! God Bless this music you can truly feel the presence of Christ among all!

  • No, the psalm here is sung in modern english. The acoustics of the Cathedral can cause some of the clarity to be lost.

  • I am sorry, but Is it Latin?

  • i need a tissue

  • Absolutely stunning. I know David Hill, one of their former Organist/Choirmasters at Westminster Cathedral, who has risen up as a prominent U.K. choirmaster and now conducts the BBC Choir. This quality here is the result, in part, to the standard he raised while at Westminster during the 1980's. As an American Anglican/Episcopalian who grew up in a prominent Men &Boys Choir outside Philadelphia, these guys could have taught us a few things about psalm singing! Bravo.

  • I agree. Lovely msuci. Superb especially at 0.18-0.42

  • having sung in one of david hill's choirs, i can say with some confidence that it's not some amazing ability on his part, it's simply that he can afford to be selective in his choosing of singers. sure he's not bad, he's just not amazing.

  • This is gorgeous! I visited this church in 07. The choir was so enthralling, I told my husband,"I can die right now."~ It was SRO every mass. The Catholic Church is alive and well in London,England~the place of many martyrs, including +St.John Southworth+ who lies in state within this church. And this choir is incredibly inspiring and hard-working. Thankx.

  • It's Gregorian Psalm Tone #2.

  • What do I see in this? It is beautiful.

  • it's the sound recording... Westminster Cathedral is huge... the sounds bounce off from every corner of the cathedral, possibly droning out the consonants...

  • Wonderful, perfect... come to feel that I am being led to sky for so much beauty ... the sky should be, this is heaven to me ...

God bless this beautiful coral of God

  • This choir sings "anglican chant" to perfection.

  • FYI: It's Westminster Cathedral instead of Westminster Abbey. I *think* it's Catholic instead of Anglican, but for the service taped I'm nor sure.

  • This is Westminster Cathedral which is Catholic. Westminster Abbey was previously Catholic until the deviant King Henry VIII stole it

  • 'until the deviant King Henry VIII stole it '

Haha. I like how you phrase the reformation.

  • it's absolutely true! the Anglicans cannot deny...

  • Allright. They'll pack up our things and leave. I hope you don't miss Oxford University, Canterbury Cathedral, Westminster Abbey... Kiss goodbye also to the works of Chaucer, Thomas More, and The Venerable Bede who helped compile much of your history.

  • don't forget King's college Chapel Choir.

  • It's not anglican chant....

  • It sounds like Anglican chant. The music the Vatican produces is horrendous.

  • Wow. The ending was the most shocking to me. Perfection.

  • They sing much better then they do in Rome.

  • The Vatican Men and boys sound ghastly...

The discipline is not like it is in England. The training is much better in England ...

  • This is what music in the Catholic Church should be!!

  • Yes, that's right!

But the best is to sing psalmodic tones in latin!

  • It most certainly should be. It's achingly beautiful.

  • I think that the organ here is the finest in England full stop. Any other possible suggestions?

  • Sorry.

I want to find a Video,I saw it about 3 years ago.

I remember it named "boy choir at Christmas"

it's about a boychoir practise singing"once in royal david's city"

a boy named Tom was chosen to sing at Christmas,I still remenber the leader told another 9 year old boy that"Tom have waited for the chance for 3 years"

but now I can not find it,I want to see it very much ! help me please!

  • Look at the next page. Someone says it's New American Standard Bible but I don't know for certain.

  • good Westminster

  • Psalms 38

  • what version ? or translation?

  • What psalm is it?

  • I don't think we're going to be asked which church we belong to when we get to Heaven. We are all believers in the Lord Jesus Christ, and we should follow Him. That's it. Amen.

  • Amazing choir, their singing adds a sense of greater holiness to mass services at Westminster Cathedral.

  • Superb! These regular chant offices , in addition to their importance of celebration, are also an excellent training for raising the quality of singing . Thanks for sharing !

    mille fois merci !

  • Oh oui bien sûr je connais. Westminster Cathedral Choir est un de mes grands favoris en angleterre. Et ici absolument d'accord pour le rendu. Vraiment magnifique de justesse.

  • Oops...I didn't see that this was a site for Westminster Cathedral...not the Abbey...The Cathedral is also amazing...

  • Westminster Abbey's choir is just brilliant...I've attended services whenever I'm fortunate enough to visit "My City"...London...

  • Neither the Abbey or the Cathedral are in the City - only St Paul's. The other two are in Westminster!!!!

  • so?

  • I went to the westminster cathedral a few weeks ago, but you can't see the choir singing :-( but the sound was amazing!

  • This is a "translation" table of the numbers: LXX= Septuagint i.e. "Catholic"; MT = Masoretic Text i.e. reformed Jewish/Protestant. LXX MT 1-8 1-8 9 9-10 10-112 11-113 113 114-115 114 116:1-9 115 116:10-19 116-145 117-146 146 147:1-11 147 147:12-20 148-150 148-150 As of number of psalms, there are always 150 psalms but the old Jewish greek septuagint adds a 151:st psalm.
  • It is sung in the second tone, by the way.

  • are the psalms numbered differently in the Catholic Scripture? This is Psalm 38 in the New American Standard Bible

  • Yes, psalm numbers in Catholic bibles are as in the Septuagint (the "standard" text during the time of Our Lord's earthly ministry) and not after the Masoretic text (newer and local in Palestine). Some editions give both numbers, though. This is a very short answer and the history of the bible is utterly complex.

  • thx. very interesting. does the Catholic version have 150 Psalms? or more or less? i wish i could find this word for word, it's so beautiful.

  • Yes, Catholic Bibles have the same 150 Psalms, they're just numbered differently because they are divided differently. Just like the 10 Commandments.

  • I would like a CD sung by this choir .I cannot find this Psalm 37 anywhere in the world! Sung by Westminster Cathedral Choir - have they done other Psalms - this one in particular I am searching for

  • They recently recorded the CD "Christmas Vespers at Westminster Cathedral". On that disk you can find a lot of psalm-settings like this, in the original language, Latin. A must have... You can find it on the Hyperion-records website.

  • this Gregorian plainchant elevates and dignifies-it is beyond beauty and into the sublime..who would be the arranger of such music? David gave us the words in Psalm 37, sang it as he played the lyre/harp..the organ accompanying Westminster Cathedral Choir gives the listener immense appreciation of this type of liturgical music-

  • My husband and I had the priviledge of attending mass at Westminister Cathedral in London three times. The music was entralling-unforgettable. I looked around and the entire place was packed with mostly young people from all over the world. The lines for Confession were around the corner-again mostly young people. I feel there's a quiet rebirth going on in our Church. This parish is at the epi-center of it, perhaps! Thankx for posting. This is perfect.

  • I had a friend who was over my house for a house party that got a call that her sister was in a bad car accident and might not make it through the night. Her sister was in a different State and no way of her being able to see her until next day. I played her this psalm and asked everyone to pray... the calmness that came over us was unreal. We just knew god was gonna make it all better. This is one of my fav clips on Youtube and I thank you for posting it!

  • am still searching to see or hear more psalms by Kings choir, Cambridge. please could God's people continue to uploading psalms chants by our great choir. we need to hear more for our worship and meditation to the glory of God. thanks a lot.

  • I went to a live choir singing at Westminster Cathederal. Although I am not Christian, nor have any intentions in changing my faith (I am Muslim) I was honoured to witness such a beautiful place and sounds. You don't need to belong to a faith to appriciate the angles of it's beauty.

  • liberalsistah, what a wonderful thing to say. I have watched videos of the hadj and have thought I would treasure the experience of walking around the kaaba. We all worship the same God after all. It's my hope that Christians and Muslims can find constructive dialogue and live not just in harmony, but brotherhood. I am certain God would smile on this. Peace.

  • thanks Cantorisdecani for sharing this chant with the world. God bless you. please I want you to do me a favour or may be anyone else in the site. am a Nigerian & in the 90s I listened to psalms 145 - 150 chanted by a choir in england. the CD belonged to a friend of mine; but lost touch with each other. THESE ARE WONDERFUL CHANTS THAT BRING OUT JOY IN SERVIING & GLORIFYING GOD. i do not know the name of the church choir. please I am tracing these chants if anyone could help me upload them. tks.

  • Perhaps try Psalms from Choir of Kings College, Cambridge.

  • hi my friend. i have searched for Kings College Choir chants on the site. only one psalm is on the site. only psalm 50. it is a beautiful piece. i think you are right, they must have sung the psalms that i am searching for. i urge anyone who could post psalms 145 - 150 by this great choir, either audio or video, to help. i will forever appreciate this. God bless you all. Amen.

  • hi, can someone tell me how is this kind of music called? i mean i know that generally it would be gregorian but i know gregorian is also separated in several types, does anyone know the exact "scientific" name for this style? thanks

  • correct me if I'm wrong. I know westminster cathedral is catholic, but this is called anglican chant

  • Actually, this is Catholic. And the tune they used in chanting the psalm we hear in this video is an old traditional one, one of the a modal tones for psalms (if my memory serves me correct as regards the term).

The reason why some may find this Anglican is because of the British accent. Nevertheless this is still Roman Catholic of the Vatican II Rites.

  • This is most definately Gregorian, but it does share so many features with Anglican chant - it is accompanied, in English, and using a constantly repeating melody. In any case, many Anglican Chants are based on Gregorian ones, e.g. Tonus Perigrinus (not sure on the spelling though!)

  • Yes, all two of them! (Sistine and London)

  • down with the anglican singing! up with the catholic choirs!

  • please my dear 01SwantonJ, do not talk down like this on the wonderful things people are doing for God. we are all one in Christ. am a Catholic also like you & we have to live by what St. Paul taught us in 1Cor.chpters 12-14 of having diverse gifts & calling, but the same Lord our God. we have a hymn in the Catholic church that says 'We are one in Jesus, all of us are one'. please lets keep encouraging one another in the Lord. God bless you. Amen!!!

  • The mysticism of catholoicism. The catholicism of mysticism.

  • absolutely beautiful - thanks for posting
