Some 'sacrilege.' Linda Ronstadt's vocal contribution really adds to the musical texture of this song. She always puts such heart and dedication into her work.
I'm ready to listen to her interpretation of those old Everly Brothers hits as three part harmonies. Bring it on!
@licensedtochill1 Their harmonies always focused a lot more on counterpoint and even included a certain amount of dissonance in places. They were a huge influence in that on Paul Kantner, who organized (insofar as they were organized!) harmonies in Jefferson Airplane. The current Jefferson Starship includes a number of Ian & Sylvia numbers in their performances, though probably even more from the Weavers. Here I&S hadn't been husband and wife or even sung together in more than a decade.
@teoslg As you discovered, he did write Four Strong Winds, along with such other songs covered by others as "Summer Wages," "Someday Soon," "Song for Canada," "Friends of Mine," "Red Velvet," and a few others from the 60s and 70s, and then a series of 1980-90s Canadian Country charting hits (4 top 10), some of which have been covered as well. There's a nice tribute album, THE GIFT, with covers like Jennifer Warnes' cover of "Blue Mountains of Mexico" (my favorite of all Tyson covers).
I've been searching for this song--finally found it with the help of my father and our memories of the old days. The second half of the song always brings a tear or two.
I've not seen this before, it looks like it was from the Reunion special, but I'm surprised that Rondstadt doesn't join in on the other numbers, unless, perhaps it was recorded separately?? Thanks for posting!
@davidlenander Yes, it was the reunion special. Ian & Sylvia had several other guests on that show, so they (I & S) had to share the singing with them as well. Other guests included Gordon Lightfoot and Emmylou Harris amongst others
@Bultaco15 Yes, I've seen tracks on YT from Judy Collins, Emmylou Harris, Gordon Lightfoot, and little blips (sort of like PSAs acknowledging I&S by Bob Dylan and Peter, Paul and Mary, they weren't present or performing, but recorded little cameos), and I know that Murray McLaughlin (sp?) was there, he appears in a chorus sort of thing, but I've not seen any solo numbers or duets that he did. But this is the first time I'd seen that Linda Ronstadt was there. Thanks again!
What a Treat ! The incomparable Ian & Sylvia with the delightful Linda R in one of the most beautiful truly Sad songs of young love gone tragic. Steve Gillette has had me cryin' every time I Ever heard this plaintive song. Thanks, big-time.
Another favorite! This song is about the area I live in. The Truckee is a half a mile from here and we go to Carson City to go shopping. Thank you, Laurie. And Steve Gillette.
Written by Tom Campbell, not Steve Gillette. You could look it up.

Amazing dissonant harmony...husband and wife, who'd have guessed?
sadly I think Linda only really kicked in - last verse.
But a thing of great and rare beauty. My thanks to all One Thousand of you!

Probably their most famous song was "You Were on My Mind" by the "We Five" but my favorite version is the one sung by Susanna Hoffs.

Really enjoyed it - thanks for poasting. Been a fan of I & S since the '60's and Linda since her Stone Pony days.
