I have an audio tape of the last few innings of a Twins-Mariners game from 1989 with John Gordon and Herb Carneal in their prime. Good stuff, especially a portion with an at-bat with then rookie Ken Griffey Jr. Nothing said summer more than the voices of the best radio team the Twins ever had! Because back then, and in the 90s, only one or two games a week were on basic cable or free TV, the rest were MSC Pay-per-view, so you had to listen to the radio to follow the team
I love the crackle of the audio also. Herb on a crackly radio takes me back to when I was a little kid. My dad always had his little black transistor radio listening to Herb broadcasting the game. My dad would always have that little radio nearby. Everytime I hear Herb's voice it reminds me of good times and my dad. Thanks for posting this.
Thanks for posting. Mr. Carneal was literally my childhood. I can't tell you how many games (before virtually every game was televised) I listened to on my little transister radio. I still remember sneaking my radio off to bed and hearing Herb describe Kirby Puckett for the first time in May of 1984. This garden variety play by play is great. I feel soooo lucky to have gotten to listen to Herb. Thanks again for the post. By the way, this game is from 9-19-2000.
@toeazy34 Thanks for looking that date up. I was interested, but I guess not enough to investigate. Probably fun hunting schedules and box scores and all that.
@rogerfritz I decided to look up the game, now that the date was found. This turns out to be the highest scoring Twins effort of 2000, they scored 15. Not sure how to post a link here, just google Minnesota Twins Texas Rangers 9-19-2000, you will get to a box score.
RIP herb, aww man i this takes me back, thanks so much for posting, love the crackle and bad audio, sounds just like it used to on my old radio way out here in the boonies west central Minnesota,,, somewhere near park rapids
@ptownojib I think the florescent light in my office made that goofy buzz. What makes this nice it is of no particular memorable game. Just a typical game of listening to the Twins. I recorded it because I was thinking how much I liked listening to Herb, and he was getting up there in years, and figured I wanted a recording of him so I could listen in the future. Glad to hear you liked it.
This takes me back. My dad would pack us in the van and drive us from Minneapolis to Grafton, North Dakota. WNAX seemed to be the best affiliate for us to pick up on I-94 from around Avon to just past Rothsay.
I think I was spoiled all those years, listening to Herb. Gordo and Dazzle are not that bad, but after growing up on Herb and Halsey, the current crew are like listening to drunken frat boys with no clue about baseball.
@rkevo55 Amen to that! Herb & Halsey were my team too. I can't listen to Dan Gladden - I'll watch/listen to Dick & Bert and enjoy them.
I gotta say that I have become spoiled over the past 21 years living out here in Seattle though, Dave Niehaus (who just passed away) & Rick Rizz have spoiled me. The M's have sucked, but their broadcast teams have been great over the years, mainly because of Dave & Rick.
I always listen to the other team's announcers when I listen to the Twins games on audio.
@rkevo55 On Herb... When the Twins played out here one year at the Kingdome, the loading spot for the players bus was very convenient. After the game I walked over and sort of nodded and waved to the Twins players (I'm not an autograph person), but when Herb Carneal came to board, I walked over and thanked him for introducing me to baseball and all the great hours spent listening to him over the years and he shook my hand and thanked me. I'm really glad that I got to do that.
