The banks got the government (which they own) to bailout their bad bets and you are expected to pay for that with your taxes (the bailouts could have paid off every mortgage and credit card in the US). So, I do not think it is a crime to refuse to pay personal debt back as you would be paying twice; once through your own direct repayment and once through your tax payment to subsidise the bank bailouts. By paying tax and debt repayments you fund the ongoing criminality of the banks.
