  • Reviewing all of my favorite 1980's bands on Youtube, this is quite fun. This is quite a song. They don't make songs like this anymore!

  • Album version begins with the drum machine shaker pattern and drops right into the chorus for a round before the vocals join in. It's what they'd play on the radio in Detroit back then. Rather different, and much fatter sounding. I prefer it to this version, although in the end this is undoubtedly one of the great, cinematic records of the 80's, if not of the pop era generally!

  • WARHORSE TIME

  • Good bicycling tune. :D

  • @NerdyCanadian

I was a excellent bicyclist until I took an arrow to the knee.

  • why does this video make me think of the movie Biggles Adventure In Time? especially when I've never even seen that movie.

  • LOVE this!!!!

  • ultravox were such a great group, somany fantastic songs and real tunes and melodies, i bought them all as I was growing up in the early 80's, take sme back to hear them all again

  • @busterskin1967 At the end of the day Ultravox are Classical musicians with words added!!… that’s why they get better with age…that’s why they never sound dated!! THE GODS!!!!

  • i can hear a bit of TOUCHED BY THE HAND OF GOD in the refrain ..what a ripp

  • Ultravox! I love this band. Great video. Thanks for sharing it.

  • That song sounds a lot like OMD used to sound in the 80´s.

  • Landrover S III 1982 , L R Series 1 1948 , 7 years after battle of Britain but a good vid for the time , the Willeys jeep should have been used more in the vid as was a car of the early 1940's period .

  • Have a listen to this in yer Ford Cortina!

  • @davidrobert2007 that would be a crusader m8 in glorious Ford yellow :-))

  • Don't usually like the remakes, but this one rocks. ():

  • @clayguy33 this is NOT a remake. it's an original and penned by Midge Ure.

  • @thubbster Actually penned by all 4 members of Ultravox, not just Midge Ure...Billy Currie, the musician of the band probably had a big hand in it as evidenced by his signature chord structures and progressions throughout...

  • Love that outro

  • Thank you for uploading this song!!!

    great music!!!

  • loooove this! :)

  • I listen Ultravox every day I go to work!

  • @alexmasic

    good for you beautiful

  • Great old-school analogue synths

  • I was so in love with Midge Ure although my love of Ultravox did get me suspended from school when i was 13. I was very, very naughty.

  • NONE of the popular music of today comes anywhere close to this quality. NONE.

  • @sweiland75 ...good song...good times from my high school days....along with Dancing with Tears in My Eyes.

  • All i can say is that Midge and Warren in particular has given me precious memories i'll treaure 'till the day i die! and meeting up with them in 2010 nothing was changed, the magic and love was still there!

  • Is it just me or does everybody break out into a hot sweat when they see MIDGE :p

  • @janemaryi i do! i also did when he looked into my eyes telling me i was a lovely lady, thought i was gonna faint or die!

  • @mymusic777ify Please do tell us details! Seriously.

  • @mymusic777ify so jealous but good 4 u think i would probs do the same...sexy sexy man :D

  • @janemaryi He is simply gorgeous! and what's more he's got this positive, charming, and charismatic energy about him, that seem to affect everyone and just fills up the whole room by it,simply by entering! I think what makes him so attractive and sexy is that he is not conceited!

  • @janemaryi No it`s not just you. I am just off to take a very cold shower . My passion for Midge Ure earned me a one week suspension from school way back in 83. I blame my hormones for all those lustful feelings towards Midge.

  • I'd have more fun cornholing your mother and wiping my dick off on the curtains.

  • This is different than the version I have on record.

  • bellissimo brano di qnd era giovanotto...

  • You ruined the Reich! Now you suffer the filth of ISLAM !! You snaggle toothed fops should have taken the deal Rudolf Hess offered you!

  • @armitius66

You stupid ignorant fucker. Go do something useful like boil your head.

  • Goose bumps all the way,class Midge.x

  • What about the Luftwaffa? Please love them too...please!

  • @DarthCoors Fuck the Luftwaffa Nazi Boy!!!

  • This reminds me of Mtv in the early 80s and my dad stealing the neighbor's cable.

  • THEY KICK BUTT IN LOS ANGELES IN THE EARLY 80'S ...THOSE BRITHISH GUYS SO COOL ..

  • c'mon lads there must be at least another album in you. Get back together!

  • Ultra Vox, Icicle Works, Joe Jackson, Talk Talk, The Police, Talking Heads, Style Council, Missing Persons. It's hillarious, I grew up mostly in the 70s and we resisted, resented & HATED new wave when it came out.

Then became radical fans, loving the cutting edge music, the artists like Jackson or Talk Talk who pushed musical boundaries. Too many got caught up in how newwave looked. Push past that & it was a wildly creative period with some serious artists-look no further than Ultra Vox!

  • Many thanks for the posting Diggieins! The video was indeed, shot at Beachy Head and Birling Gap in East Sussex.

Reap The Wild Wind was a hit in October 1982, and is from Ultravox's album Quartet.

It was the first of four singles from that album, the others being Hymn, Visions In Blue and We Came To Dance.

  • Midge...you legend ! I love this song. Romance and flying ...ah.... you can't beat this stuff. :-)

  • This is a great song, snippets like (3:39) the Tibetan rhythm humming mantras, but only in a more rapid movement

Buddhist Monks - Chant with Cymbals and Gantra

    here: /watch?v=w17M9_ncaXc

  • just loved midge ure x

  • okay now i remeber the quote i wanted it's "never have so many owed so much to so few". and that was so true. god bless the men who flew the planes that saved england.

  • @TheSandsie13 Not just England mate, but all of Britain. Dont forget it was British troops fighting the Nazi Hun, not just English. Us Scots Welsh and Irish gave as much as your lot!

  • @ianmac64 Yes, the Irish courageously fought in the British Army, it is a shame that the rulers of Ireland shamed their country by remaining neutral. After the war Churchill said it took great restraint not to invade Ireland. The Irish government were cowards ant traitors who also turned their backs on thousands of refugees and as such should have been declared enemies.

  • @TheSandsie13 they did not save england they saved britain and in turn this led to saving the world from the evils of nazi germany

  • which one of the boys jumps in the spitfire near the end? i know it's not warren (he's standing on the ground) and i know it's not midge (he'd flat disappear) . can anyone help me? what was it churchill said "never have so many... (i've forgotten the rest of it just now).

  • i need a time machine to go back to a time before rap was popular

  • @tank95ww Indeed. Oh for the days when songs were actually about something. When each video told a story and moved you in some way. When what was on the charts or in fashion seemed better than ever before.

Youth culture and Pop died sometime in the mid 90's.

  • @britishfirstandlast yes i agree

  • Reap the whirlwind=suffer the penalties for one's misdeeds??

  • This seems to have special meaning for me as my father was a Lancaster bomber pilot in WWII. For some reason the song helps me relate to what my father went through.

  • @JimReaper2007 I respect those who fought for our freedoms in The Battle of Britiain and other conflicts. My Great Uncle was shot down by the Germans. I like this song but I had never seen the video. It appears to be in the area around Birling Gap Sussex.

  • and by the way, a timeless video...great

  • i actually don't like 80s stuff, but this is one of the best melodies ever. midge ure was that genius

  • *** Ethereal

  • @earthalien77 I wish I could give you a hundred thumbs up.

  • still one of my all time fave songs

  • As an aviation buff I've always loved this video. I miss classic videos as well as much of the 'new wave' music from the early 80s. At least You Tube is here to see these videos again, MTV sure doesn't get it. I hate reality tv=cheap programming.

  • @picmajik Aye MTV's lost it's way, that's for sure

  • es de los grupos que en cuanto los oyes sabes que son ellos mola

  • ah memories of a mispent youth sat listening to really good music. i was heavily into ultravox back then and aussie music back then. still am.

  • this was a very good band i wonder what happened to them?

  • @doctorw2 Hi mate they have just reformed for euro tour it was brill saw them in liverpool .last time i saw them was november 1982 28 years dont time fly.

  • LOVE this song!

  • I was into Ultravox like an addict along with a pile of oterh English bands for the first few years of the 80s. Not only were they great msucians, they knew how to write a song and use electronics in inventive and new ways. Midge was definitely a great singer.

  • which one of the guys is "flying" the plane?

  • love midge h's probably the best singer of any one to come out of the new wave times. and he's dead sexy

  • why should we ,anybody , break balls about a bit of history. just know that we all had the chance, freedom, flying , making a difference. end of story!

  • love the 80,ties, new romantics, new wave, beautiful man, nice clothes and of course the best music ever

  • fab

  • ok super hicior

  • Precioso tema.

  • Actually, the saying "Reap The Wild Wind" was an affirmation of going into battle with out much hope of coming back.

  • @MrDoppolina

Not really, the term you are thinking of is 'Reap the Whirlwind'

  • My grandad was Luftwaffa, but they all died...why?? I would like to know him.

  • DarthCoors: Why do you think they all died, dickhead? Because their leader was like you!

  • I am sure your Grandad was a great pilot.

Why? He was serving his country.A big call for one so young. Bravery, and sheer luck was all these guy's knew,on both sides. I wish I knew mine.

  • Joey, have you ever been in a... in a Turkish prison?

  • @CaptainCIarenceOveur Have you ever seen a gladiator movie?

  • @wynternight777 Have you ever seen a grown man naked?

  • its called luftwaffe stupid

  • Being half German and half Scottish can be a real bitch. Realy, what can you say? Being from the MacDonald of the Isles clan and half of the Overhoff clan in Germany. Fuck. When it comes down down to it of course Scottish music rules. German music sucks. Ultravox rocks.

  • Yeah, ultravox rocks. both early and later (john foxx/midge ure),

But i'm biased, i met my wife over a discussion of music, and we both loved ultravox...

20 years this year, and going strong.

    Pretty cool touchstone.

BTW- the wife is welch, do they even make music??? :-)

    UVox !!!

  • Thankyou shazroh,

Remember they were in a desperate war that was not in their control. Do not be ashamed of your German background.

Ultravox have captured a wonderful moment in time, that we must be glad not to have been involved.

We will never forget the brave men who flew those terrifying missions in the name of freedom or...orders.

    Andy

  • good ole days was only 12 when this came out.

  • Oh the memories of listening and savoring really good music that was not just tossed together! Takes me back!

  • What else can a bassist who loves aviation say ???:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D?

  • RAF & Luftwafftra...brothers in air combat!!

    RIP both sides. xx

  • Beautifully orchestrated, and the video clip hets it up just right.

  • so many memories come back listning to this, amazing band ,thanks to the op!

  • @ferrers88

    Seconded!

  • yay :D

  • bands like ths don't exist anymore.

  • Reunion tour announced for 2010. Pretty cool.

  • hoping to catch them in Berlin:)

  • And I with you !! :)))

  • with midge ure or john foxx?

  • They were both great in their own ways.

Check out John Foxx's (Dennis Leigh's) newer stuff- "cathedral oceans". John Foxx did graphic art work after his post-UVox music works- and the youtube video is really really good.

I used to shoot stuff like this on an animation camera- the transitions- so this really speaks to me.

Ure was a unexpectedly excellent replacement for John Foxx. The best kind of art.

  • wonderful....wonderful....

  • Ultravox ... YES !!!

  • This is 1 of my favourite songs from the 80s gr8 memories

  • Uplifting song. I was in highschool when all this great music was created. You compare it to the stuff today and it makes me feel so greatfull to have grown up during such a creative period. Midge also co-wrote "Do they Know It's Christmass Time?" another song full of memories from highschool. This Music still sounds great today.

  • this is not just a great song that added more richness to the Mighty 80's, but it is epic writing and producing that has set itself apart from the crap we hear now!! simply awe inspiring and uplifting! you can never say enough about this classic piece. how sorely I misses the 80's!!

  • oh this song reminds me of such good times.

  • still a great song for decades!!

  • THIS FILM IS DEDICATED TO TOSE WHO GAVE ALL ................EVERYWHERE dose it matter how it sounds or looks do not always blame the generals the blame sits squarely on the shoulders of the politicians and there veiws of world order are we not seeing a world now according to GW Bush ???we are reaping not the wild wind but what was sown

  • great fucking song !!!

  • Comment removed

  • @boardy777777

yeah, and got shot down by the germans!!!!!!!

  • I saw Midge last night in Kraków Poland live, unforgettable, genius, phantastic personality so sad last night is gone. I want to see you again Midge:)))

  • good song and video for our r.a .f pilots who saved england during the war.heros everone of one them and they wont be forgotten

  • Its fair to note that there were hero's on all sides; like it says at the end; its dedicated to everyone from everywhere who gave their all. And the aircraft from all countries were equally impressive...

  • i saw Ultravox when they came to Genoa in sept 1984. they music is so smart, clean, fluid, relaxing, energic, regular...

  • It all went wrong after 1981.Not the direction they should have taken...but it's all about cash ain't it.

  • As much as I hate to say it I sort of agree. Just about everything on Vienna was brilliant. The albums after had too many filler tracks. How Dancing With Tears in My Eyes became a popular single is beyond me, couldn't listen to new Ultavox by then. That said I would travel from Oz to Europe for a 2010 gig. Would do the same for New Order.....pity they are no more.

  • Great song. That's just me.

  • Jeden z najlepszych zespołów wszechczasów.Tamte lata to najlepsza muzyka, jaka istnieje.Pozzdrawiam wszystkich fanów new romantic.

  • How about just a simple referance to the boys in the RAF.

  • am a 90s boy but theres nothing that can beat ultravox its like a new generation for me lol

  • This leans more toward an upfront bass mix must be an club remix, however it sounds good, man remember drinking micky's big mouths for the first time to this haha.

  • Są po prostu niezwykli...

Ośmielam sie powiedziec, dla mnie - nieśmiertelni !

Impressive and exciting Midge Ure !!!

  • Wow! Never heard this version before. Sometimes YouTube is good for such things. This song was all about trips to La Jolla Cove in the early '80's. Good times.....

  • Inspirational! It's songs like this that explains the reason why "Rap" Music is refered to as "Crap" Music! Aviation is not about War, it's about riding or Reaping the Wild Wind! Kind of like Riding Waves as Surfers do. Aero Dynamics & Hydro Dynamics! Surfing & Sailing Boats or Airplanes is one of God's gifts to Sport. (I hope I worded that right! LOL!) Just don't kill yourself trying to Reap the Wild Wind! LOL! It's seriously Dangerous!

  • I agree totally stoneyx.

  • @stoneyx1

    You've totally got it man!

  • @stoneyx1 rap=crap oh boy what an inventive burn

  • Great song!

I certainly hear a "Roxy Music" connection in this song. Ferry could've pulled this one off........

  • maybe my memory is failing me but this isn't the version that played on MTV back in the day is it? I don't remember the beat box beats in the beginning. hell maybe it was and I'm just losing it.

  • No ur memory is fine, this is a slighly diff. version. But close enough..

  • you take my hand and give me your friendship, i'll take my time and give you my slow reply, give an inch and i'll make the best of it, take all you want and leave all the rest to die....80s FOREVER!!

  • Not really a fan of synth pop, but the early synth bands were all good like this. Its a shame that all those that followed were crap and still are.

Stock aitkin and waterman is where it all went wrong.

  • I adore the beautiful whirling syths that appear more than once but are especially brilliant and poignant at 1.44 and from 2.42 onwards.

How I miss this kind of music!!

  • I forgot I had this album!! I wonder if it's still in my parents' basement... The early 80's was a great era to be young.

  • It really was. I have fond memories of sitting in my room with the headphones on, listening to the local rock station which had gone to a New Wave format, hoping to hear this song and others. Missing Persons, Berlin, Duran Duran, Flock of Seagulls. All the classic 80s bands that made MTV what it was. Better days then these, that's for sure.

  • @wynternight777 That wasn't the world famous KROQ by any chance?

  • @EvilDandy No, a local radio station: WNOR FM99. Though, years later, there was a station that had a local stream of a show on KROQ.

  • @wynternight777

Put your headphones on and listen to the best music from the eighties on my channel!!!!

    Thanks....

  • @wynternight777 I know ITA with you!

  • A song and video..for the people who gave up there tomorrows for our todays....god bless

  • When listen to this song,I leave my troubles behind and fly so free & easy for almost 5 minutes! Nothing can go wrong, I am free! After that, back to my harsh reality... I guess we create are own reality with our thought. Why can I practice what I preach? Anyway, Love this song and the scenes of High adventure! Thank you for posting..

  • This is dedicated to my grandad, he fought in WW2 and was a hero! Eric Shankster.

  • Good on him - nice tribute - sure he would love it..

  • My favourite Ultravox video, I love the Royal Air Force planes and Spitfires, giving that band a clear 'Allied' character.

  • great bass from chris cross....

  • Corking stuff! Just got back from seeing them at the Dome in Brighton - they bought the house down - seriously

  • The wrong side of fifty but this song is one of the best in my collection, brings back fabulous memories.Great upload

  • there`s no wrong side of 5o if you still can treasure music like that!

    Have fun...

    Serpent

  • There was a show in Canada on City TV, the NEW MUSIC and I will always remember when they highlighted Ultravox. This is a true classic.

  • The video is a fine tribute to the brave people who saved our world from fascism.

  • Ummmm... these planes are from WWI and II -- maybe it is about aviation more generally. Further, the US and UK meet Mussolini's definition of fascism -- government ruled on the behalf of private corporations -- so what were we saved from again? Maybe I would agree if I were getting some of the bailout trillions, too.

  • I agree the bailout trillions are a bad idea, Bright, and I'm not getting one cent of them, and I voted Green in 2008.

I DON"T like Anglophone plutocracy, but the choice in WW2 was not between AP and some ideal social democracy--and the AP of that era was far more tempered with social democracy than today's version--it was between AP and Nazi rule. I assume you would not prefer the latter.

  • bright93 go play with other songs if this one is over your head! This is a classic and if you cant work the theme out, then go to some other lower class!

  • No of course, the Clash never used militarism. Especially not with "Combat Rock", the fact that they wore military uniforms at one point, etc. You haven't got a clue what you're talking about mate.

  • So, you are saying that the Clash were praising militarism by using military style in dress or songs like 'Rock the Casbah' or albums like 'Combat Rock?' I don't think so, geezer. I suppose Gang of Four were praising Maoist Communism? 'I Love a Man in Uniform' was really about how they did in fact love uniformed men? 'Love to see them shoot' must have several meanings.

  • Try reading what I put before making idiotic assumptions. I said the Clash used militarist terminology and imagery. You like seem to like making these chasm-jumping assumptions.

There's a world apart between recognising the cost of human life in a conflict and glorifying what their generals may or may not have been fighting for. That is the message here. It is possible to respect the human cost, young people following orders, without endorsing the battle plan.

  • Also - regardless of what we may or may not have been "saved from" - I don't recall millions of people being sent to gas chambers by "the establishment" in this country. That was the kind of fascism we were fighting against. Which definition would you rather use? Mussolini's? Hitler's? Some other genocidal despot's? Or the one that sets apart the kind of regime that carries out atrocities on a vast scale and distances itself from people that like to rewrite history after the event...

  • I agree with you 100% bright93. So, why all the thumbs down? Some people will still cheer on the Establishment no matter how many of their children are sent to die. It never seems to end.

  • Ive loved this song since it first came out.

  • Is anyone hooking up pre/post Bournemouth gig for a beer??.. Would love to meet other fans//Paul

  • I'm 45 years old and still love this song!!. Saw UV 4 times back in the 80s..Have been living and working in the USA for 12 yrs.. Am flying over in April to the Bournemouth gig!!!

  • Ultravox...good bandand yet to be beaten tho U2 think they have the clout! U2 r so overated. Yes they ARE!

  • We were fortunate enough to enjoy these songs when they were first released - so many quality bands Depeche Mode, U2, Simple Minds etc maybe we're getting old - or maybe these bands really were a bit special
