Album version begins with the drum machine shaker pattern and drops right into the chorus for a round before the vocals join in. It's what they'd play on the radio in Detroit back then. Rather different, and much fatter sounding. I prefer it to this version, although in the end this is undoubtedly one of the great, cinematic records of the 80's, if not of the pop era generally!
ultravox were such a great group, somany fantastic songs and real tunes and melodies, i bought them all as I was growing up in the early 80's, take sme back to hear them all again
@busterskin1967 At the end of the day Ultravox are Classical musicians with words added!!… that’s why they get better with age…that’s why they never sound dated!! THE GODS!!!!
Landrover S III 1982 , L R Series 1 1948 , 7 years after battle of Britain but a good vid for the time , the Willeys jeep should have been used more in the vid as was a car of the early 1940's period .
@thubbster Actually penned by all 4 members of Ultravox, not just Midge Ure...Billy Currie, the musician of the band probably had a big hand in it as evidenced by his signature chord structures and progressions throughout...
All i can say is that Midge and Warren in particular has given me precious memories i'll treaure 'till the day i die! and meeting up with them in 2010 nothing was changed, the magic and love was still there!
@janemaryi He is simply gorgeous! and what's more he's got this positive, charming, and charismatic energy about him, that seem to affect everyone and just fills up the whole room by it,simply by entering! I think what makes him so attractive and sexy is that he is not conceited!
@janemaryi No it`s not just you. I am just off to take a very cold shower . My passion for Midge Ure earned me a one week suspension from school way back in 83. I blame my hormones for all those lustful feelings towards Midge.

@ianmac64 Yes, the Irish courageously fought in the British Army, it is a shame that the rulers of Ireland shamed their country by remaining neutral. After the war Churchill said it took great restraint not to invade Ireland. The Irish government were cowards ant traitors who also turned their backs on thousands of refugees and as such should have been declared enemies.
which one of the boys jumps in the spitfire near the end? i know it's not warren (he's standing on the ground) and i know it's not midge (he'd flat disappear) . can anyone help me? what was it churchill said "never have so many... (i've forgotten the rest of it just now).
@tank95ww Indeed. Oh for the days when songs were actually about something. When each video told a story and moved you in some way. When what was on the charts or in fashion seemed better than ever before.
Youth culture and Pop died sometime in the mid 90's.
This seems to have special meaning for me as my father was a Lancaster bomber pilot in WWII. For some reason the song helps me relate to what my father went through.
@JimReaper2007 I respect those who fought for our freedoms in The Battle of Britiain and other conflicts. My Great Uncle was shot down by the Germans. I like this song but I had never seen the video. It appears to be in the area around Birling Gap Sussex.
As an aviation buff I've always loved this video. I miss classic videos as well as much of the 'new wave' music from the early 80s. At least You Tube is here to see these videos again, MTV sure doesn't get it. I hate reality tv=cheap programming.
@doctorw2 Hi mate they have just reformed for euro tour it was brill saw them in liverpool .last time i saw them was november 1982 28 years dont time fly.
I was into Ultravox like an addict along with a pile of oterh English bands for the first few years of the 80s. Not only were they great msucians, they knew how to write a song and use electronics in inventive and new ways. Midge was definitely a great singer.
why should we ,anybody , break balls about a bit of history. just know that we all had the chance, freedom, flying , making a difference. end of story!

Its fair to note that there were hero's on all sides; like it says at the end; its dedicated to everyone from everywhere who gave their all. And the aircraft from all countries were equally impressive...
As much as I hate to say it I sort of agree. Just about everything on Vienna was brilliant. The albums after had too many filler tracks. How Dancing With Tears in My Eyes became a popular single is beyond me, couldn't listen to new Ultavox by then. That said I would travel from Oz to Europe for a 2010 gig. Would do the same for New Order.....pity they are no more.
This leans more toward an upfront bass mix must be an club remix, however it sounds good, man remember drinking micky's big mouths for the first time to this haha.
Wow! Never heard this version before. Sometimes YouTube is good for such things. This song was all about trips to La Jolla Cove in the early '80's. Good times.....
Inspirational! It's songs like this that explains the reason why "Rap" Music is refered to as "Crap" Music! Aviation is not about War, it's about riding or Reaping the Wild Wind! Kind of like Riding Waves as Surfers do. Aero Dynamics & Hydro Dynamics! Surfing & Sailing Boats or Airplanes is one of God's gifts to Sport. (I hope I worded that right! LOL!) Just don't kill yourself trying to Reap the Wild Wind! LOL! It's seriously Dangerous!
maybe my memory is failing me but this isn't the version that played on MTV back in the day is it? I don't remember the beat box beats in the beginning. hell maybe it was and I'm just losing it.
you take my hand and give me your friendship, i'll take my time and give you my slow reply, give an inch and i'll make the best of it, take all you want and leave all the rest to die....80s FOREVER!!
It really was. I have fond memories of sitting in my room with the headphones on, listening to the local rock station which had gone to a New Wave format, hoping to hear this song and others. Missing Persons, Berlin, Duran Duran, Flock of Seagulls. All the classic 80s bands that made MTV what it was. Better days then these, that's for sure.
When listen to this song,I leave my troubles behind and fly so free & easy for almost 5 minutes! Nothing can go wrong, I am free! After that, back to my harsh reality... I guess we create are own reality with our thought. Why can I practice what I preach? Anyway, Love this song and the scenes of High adventure! Thank you for posting..
Ummmm... these planes are from WWI and II -- maybe it is about aviation more generally. Further, the US and UK meet Mussolini's definition of fascism -- government ruled on the behalf of private corporations -- so what were we saved from again? Maybe I would agree if I were getting some of the bailout trillions, too.
I agree the bailout trillions are a bad idea, Bright, and I'm not getting one cent of them, and I voted Green in 2008.
I DON"T like Anglophone plutocracy, but the choice in WW2 was not between AP and some ideal social democracy--and the AP of that era was far more tempered with social democracy than today's version--it was between AP and Nazi rule. I assume you would not prefer the latter.
bright93 go play with other songs if this one is over your head! This is a classic and if you cant work the theme out, then go to some other lower class!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
The quality of your writing is a clear indication of who belongs in the 'lower class.' Yes, this song is over someone's head but not mine. Look -- this is pop music and cannot bear too close scrutiny. It has a more Thatcherite tone than most of the pop music of its day. The Clash, Gang of Four, the Jam -- you would never hear praise for militarism. Further, chances are this is really praise for the Falkland War merely displaced onto WWII for added credibility.
No of course, the Clash never used militarism. Especially not with "Combat Rock", the fact that they wore military uniforms at one point, etc. You haven't got a clue what you're talking about mate.
So, you are saying that the Clash were praising militarism by using military style in dress or songs like 'Rock the Casbah' or albums like 'Combat Rock?' I don't think so, geezer. I suppose Gang of Four were praising Maoist Communism? 'I Love a Man in Uniform' was really about how they did in fact love uniformed men? 'Love to see them shoot' must have several meanings.
Try reading what I put before making idiotic assumptions. I said the Clash used militarist terminology and imagery. You like seem to like making these chasm-jumping assumptions.
There's a world apart between recognising the cost of human life in a conflict and glorifying what their generals may or may not have been fighting for. That is the message here. It is possible to respect the human cost, young people following orders, without endorsing the battle plan.
Also - regardless of what we may or may not have been "saved from" - I don't recall millions of people being sent to gas chambers by "the establishment" in this country. That was the kind of fascism we were fighting against. Which definition would you rather use? Mussolini's? Hitler's? Some other genocidal despot's? Or the one that sets apart the kind of regime that carries out atrocities on a vast scale and distances itself from people that like to rewrite history after the event...
I agree with you 100% bright93. So, why all the thumbs down? Some people will still cheer on the Establishment no matter how many of their children are sent to die. It never seems to end.
I'm 45 years old and still love this song!!. Saw UV 4 times back in the 80s..Have been living and working in the USA for 12 yrs.. Am flying over in April to the Bournemouth gig!!!
We were fortunate enough to enjoy these songs when they were first released - so many quality bands Depeche Mode, U2, Simple Minds etc maybe we're getting old - or maybe these bands really were a bit special
Reviewing all of my favorite 1980's bands on Youtube, this is quite fun. This is quite a song. They don't make songs like this anymore!

i saw Ultravox when they came to Genoa in sept 1984. they music is so smart, clean, fluid, relaxing, energic, regular...

It all went wrong after 1981.Not the direction they should have taken...but it's all about cash ain't it.

This version is hideous! Too bouncy and pop'ish. Totally takes away from the epic, dark elements of the original.

I certainly hear a "Roxy Music" connection in this song. Ferry could've pulled this one off........

Not really a fan of synth pop, but the early synth bands were all good like this. Its a shame that all those that followed were crap and still are.
Stock aitkin and waterman is where it all went wrong.

I adore the beautiful whirling syths that appear more than once but are especially brilliant and poignant at 1.44 and from 2.42 onwards.
How I miss this kind of music!!

I forgot I had this album!! I wonder if it's still in my parents' basement... The early 80's was a great era to be young.
nauort23 2 years ago 4
It really was. I have fond memories of sitting in my room with the headphones on, listening to the local rock station which had gone to a New Wave format, hoping to hear this song and others. Missing Persons, Berlin, Duran Duran, Flock of Seagulls. All the classic 80s bands that made MTV what it was. Better days then these, that's for sure.

@wynternight777 That wasn't the world famous KROQ by any chance?
EvilDandy 1 year ago
@EvilDandy No, a local radio station: WNOR FM99. Though, years later, there was a station that had a local stream of a show on KROQ.

There was a show in Canada on City TV, the NEW MUSIC and I will always remember when they highlighted Ultravox. This is a true classic.

The video is a fine tribute to the brave people who saved our world from fascism.
amrak63 2 years ago
Ummmm... these planes are from WWI and II -- maybe it is about aviation more generally. Further, the US and UK meet Mussolini's definition of fascism -- government ruled on the behalf of private corporations -- so what were we saved from again? Maybe I would agree if I were getting some of the bailout trillions, too.
bright93 2 years ago
I agree the bailout trillions are a bad idea, Bright, and I'm not getting one cent of them, and I voted Green in 2008.
I DON"T like Anglophone plutocracy, but the choice in WW2 was not between AP and some ideal social democracy--and the AP of that era was far more tempered with social democracy than today's version--it was between AP and Nazi rule. I assume you would not prefer the latter.
amrak63 2 years ago 5
bright93 go play with other songs if this one is over your head! This is a classic and if you cant work the theme out, then go to some other lower class!
mgzt190plus 2 years ago 4

The quality of your writing is a clear indication of who belongs in the 'lower class.' Yes, this song is over someone's head but not mine. Look -- this is pop music and cannot bear too close scrutiny. It has a more Thatcherite tone than most of the pop music of its day. The Clash, Gang of Four, the Jam -- you would never hear praise for militarism. Further, chances are this is really praise for the Falkland War merely displaced onto WWII for added credibility.
bright93 2 years ago
No of course, the Clash never used militarism. Especially not with "Combat Rock", the fact that they wore military uniforms at one point, etc. You haven't got a clue what you're talking about mate.
iaindal 2 years ago
So, you are saying that the Clash were praising militarism by using military style in dress or songs like 'Rock the Casbah' or albums like 'Combat Rock?' I don't think so, geezer. I suppose Gang of Four were praising Maoist Communism? 'I Love a Man in Uniform' was really about how they did in fact love uniformed men? 'Love to see them shoot' must have several meanings.
bright93 2 years ago
Try reading what I put before making idiotic assumptions. I said the Clash used militarist terminology and imagery. You like seem to like making these chasm-jumping assumptions.
There's a world apart between recognising the cost of human life in a conflict and glorifying what their generals may or may not have been fighting for. That is the message here. It is possible to respect the human cost, young people following orders, without endorsing the battle plan.
iaindal 2 years ago 3
Also - regardless of what we may or may not have been "saved from" - I don't recall millions of people being sent to gas chambers by "the establishment" in this country. That was the kind of fascism we were fighting against. Which definition would you rather use? Mussolini's? Hitler's? Some other genocidal despot's? Or the one that sets apart the kind of regime that carries out atrocities on a vast scale and distances itself from people that like to rewrite history after the event...
iaindal 2 years ago
I agree with you 100% bright93. So, why all the thumbs down? Some people will still cheer on the Establishment no matter how many of their children are sent to die. It never seems to end.
