I don't take anything away from the kids, because I know they performed their hearts out . . . but it would just be nice to see a band win with an original program instead of refurbishing a corps program. Santa Clara in 2000, if I'm correct. Very well done, and congrats!
The marching bands that get far and get good scores are that way because they work their butts off. People blame it on them being "rich" but it's not. Its because they work for it- Homestead gets the same blame for being "rich" but its more of because they practice every single day (excluding sunday). So people who talk about schools getting high scores because they have money need to shove it.
@Mavrik2013 i hate that stupid new ACLU thing... my band already has enough trouble funding itself as it is... no need to encourage people to NOT pay their band "contributions"

@Mavrik2013 This cannot be stressed enough. L.D. Bell usually has an open rehearsal and run through a couple nights before they leave for BOA Grand Nationals each year. A few of my friends and I went to one of them and got there early so we could watch the rehearsal as well. It absolutely blew my mind how well they rehearsed. They were like robots. They were incredibly efficient. My old high school band was reasonably successful but the way Bell rehearsed made us look like four year olds.
@Mavrik2013 Well my band practices as much as possible... We are under staffed we all have very old equipment. We haven't had new uniforms in 15 years. We often get bumped from a field to another one having to paint a new football field on a baseball field... It sucks because we don't have any money. But it also is determined by work ethics
my favorite part is 4:00-6:30, aka the ballad. it's like a trance. and the drum major doesn't look stupid, at all, because he's getting what he wants out of the band. totally impacting.
Everyone in my band just blares all the time, they have no sense of ensemble or balance. Plus only half of us know how to march in step. I would kill for a chance to march with Avon or L.D. Bell or someone better than us.
I finally understand why this drill is so clean and why the music technique is so hammered out. I just checked out the rehearsal schedule for the Avon band. They've got 'em practicing all summer, save two weeks for vacation. That's pretty brutal.
@HolyNameSnipers holy shit! how is that possible! i play baritone in my marching band in cary nc and we practice for 16+ hours a week. how are they that amazing?
Best HS Band I've Seen. Hands Down. The Drum Major is Killin everyone in the Competition. This guy is way ahead of his time. AVON Just became my Favorite HS Band.
Gosh I can see why yall are like AMAZING yall probaly pratice a whole lot!!!!!! In texas we have an eight hour rule thats how much we can pratice a week during marching season.
Ohh my lorrrdd the part with no hats is brilliant! As are the masks! I'm from one of the big Texas bands that goes to grand nats, and geez i wish we had enough time to get this good (stupid 8 hour rule). How long do you guys practice a week?
Such an amazing band great job!! and to the previous comment i really believe that what the drum major was doing was amazing the expressions he gave towards the music really helps the audience feel the emotion of the music. Where is Avon High School at??
To answer previous questions we have NEVER rented out Lucas Oil Stadium. I think Carmel may have borrowed the Colts practice field once so maybe that was where that came from. An no Richard Saucedo doesn't write our music.
Gosh.... I've been watching the Japanese high school marching band competitions on youtube for a while now, and they make this look really amateurish...
@babyblue75 So have I. But none of the ones ive seen come even close to this. First off, they're indoors. If they performed in a dome such as this, I can guarantee that they wouldn't sound as big as they do. Few of them experiment. This show made me stand up and cheer and NONE of the Japanese marching bands have yet to make me do that. If this band performed inside, youl probably go deaf. if they were the size of a Japanese band and performed in Japanese competition, they would do just as well.
@mariokart77 I think his idea is valid even thought it was presented rather rudely. His comment was directed towards marching band high schools, not DCI. My opinion is that Japan marching bands are much cleaner than US bands. Now does Japan have more resourses, funding, and time for music? Does USA have more emotion in their preformances? I don't know the answers, just areas for discussion. But one thing is for sure. These two are hard to compare, considering their different cultues.
@babyblue75 Some BOA Grand Nationals bands (including Avon) sound significantly better than the Japanese bands, not to knock Nishihara, which is a fantastic band. And with regards to your DCI comment, never try to compare Drum Corps and Marching Band. It's so much easier to blend brass with brass than brass with woodwinds, and Drum Corps can afford to be much more selective in auditions than high school bands (and most high schools do not hold competitive auditions for marching band spots).
Because I'm just sure you're talking about Nishihara, I want you to think long and hard about how the music, visuals, and concept of this show compare to any Japanese band. I haven't seen anything this creative from a Japanese band.
By the way, being Japanese does not make a band good. The work put into it does.
Just so yall know every Great Band (Fwood Tx here) Idolizes the amazing bands like Avon, LdBell, Marcus...etc. Amazing Amazing amazing that highschool kids pull this off. Just out of curiosity does Richard Suacedo write your music? We have him write ours and mvmt 2 has the same solo part. Ours was an oboe playing but same melody.
@xxdkthxx While that is true that class A bands may have all the technical skill in playing and marching, you simply can't do as much with that small amount of people.
Very awesome band, very awesome show - hopefully I'll get to meet some of them when my band and I go to Indy Regionals November 6th...Kettering Fairmont's pretty dominant most years here in Ohio, but damn...we haven't been able to hold a candle to Avon since All The Bells and Whistles...
@Invader001 I was commenting about the what you said, and by the attitude conveyed in your earlier comment, BD won't be earning the title, that is, if everyone in that band has the same kind of attitude as you.
@yomolob Attitude =/= commitment to the band. Obviously i feel good about this season enough where i can brag about it. But ill let let Ben Davis High do the talking for me.
gosh the drum major is killin it.......he should teach me how to conduct like that lol i really love avon even tho i dont go there its one of my favorite high school marching band's
Best show ever. Arguably of course. But I've seen a lot and this one is definitely up there. The guard is incredible. The brass are piercing when they need to be and the woodwinds are gorgeous. This GE is astronomical. Wow. Avon is totally on fire.
I applaud this wonderful band for not relying on props to win their shows.
I have so often seen bands that win just because they use bouncy balls or thirty-foot words on the field. It's great to see a band that relies on precision, tone, and uniformity.
Great vid. Reliving the moment while the kids are at BC. The part at 8:30ish still brings tears to my eyes and gives me goosebumps... amazing. Thanks for sharing =)
Great show Avon! As a tenor (drums) player though, i wanna make one little comment about the bouncing while you march, it is quite noticable from up high. Still sounded incredible and congrats on the performance!!
@LionBaitProductions ok that makes sense because i saw the guy walking while the solo was playing and i thought the video audio was off or you guys were playing a soundtrack, thanks :)
Super clean, but just a rip off of Santa Clara Vanguard 1999. Heard the intro, I was like okay I've heard this song before. Heard the ballad, then I skipped to the end to see which song was the closer. Every song was from SCV.
@contras0p dude its just a high school band, if it was a dci band doing this then yes a total rip off, but tones of high school bands play same stuff that dci bands do.
@1digidude It would be one thing for them to use songs from different corps but its a rip off when everything is exactly the same, including the order of songs. Btw, I dont really care so much, but most people in drum corps hate it when drum corps is referred to as "band".
@contras0p Referring to the order, this is all Samuel Barber's 1st symphony. Avon didn't copy Santa Clara, they played it in the order that the song was written. They didn't copy Santa Clara's music, they played Samuel Barbers 1st symphony, which sounds like the same thing that Santa Clara didin 1999.
@contras0p Just checked, their music was The canyon, symphony 1 (SB), symphony 2 (SB), and Blue Shades. Avons music was symphony 1 and 2 by Samuel Barber. The canyon was also played by Lawrence Central in 2008 (Possibly under a different name, I'm not sure). And I'm sure Blue Shades has also been played by many bands also.
@contras0p Last comment. Just watched Santa Clara. They play The Canyon, then Symphony 1 part 1, then a part of symphony 2, then part 4, then part 3, then Blue Shades. Avon played Symphony 1 part 1, then part 2, then part 3, then Symphony 2, then part 4. So the order was completly different.
@contras0p I don't understand what your point is. We played work from Samuel Barber, so did they. Is there something wrong with that? Do you know how many repeats of music there are? Unless its original music (which I believe Carmel won with in 2005), its all copied.
@LionBaitProductions Hey, my bad dude. you're correct. It makes since that its not a rip off, since they just played symphony 1 and 2. A rip off could have had blue shades, and the canyon.
I prefer original music for marching programs because of this. Although I wouldn't really consider playing the music from Frameworks or Spin Cycle as a show would be a rip off, since they've only been played by one group before.
the rifle work is intimidating. Very well done.

@yomolob Attitude =/= commitment to the band. Obviously i feel good about this season enough where i can brag about it. But ill let let Ben Davis High do the talking for me.

Wow! ... very impressive. You can see the influence of their directors backgrounds at play here .... The future of DCI, I dare say?

1digidude 1 year ago
@1digidude It would be one thing for them to use songs from different corps but its a rip off when everything is exactly the same, including the order of songs. Btw, I dont really care so much, but most people in drum corps hate it when drum corps is referred to as "band".
contras0p 1 year ago
@contras0p Referring to the order, this is all Samuel Barber's 1st symphony. Avon didn't copy Santa Clara, they played it in the order that the song was written. They didn't copy Santa Clara's music, they played Samuel Barbers 1st symphony, which sounds like the same thing that Santa Clara didin 1999.
LionBaitProductions 1 year ago
@contras0p Just checked, their music was The canyon, symphony 1 (SB), symphony 2 (SB), and Blue Shades. Avons music was symphony 1 and 2 by Samuel Barber. The canyon was also played by Lawrence Central in 2008 (Possibly under a different name, I'm not sure). And I'm sure Blue Shades has also been played by many bands also.
LionBaitProductions 1 year ago
@contras0p Last comment. Just watched Santa Clara. They play The Canyon, then Symphony 1 part 1, then a part of symphony 2, then part 4, then part 3, then Blue Shades. Avon played Symphony 1 part 1, then part 2, then part 3, then Symphony 2, then part 4. So the order was completly different.
LionBaitProductions 1 year ago
@contras0p I don't understand what your point is. We played work from Samuel Barber, so did they. Is there something wrong with that? Do you know how many repeats of music there are? Unless its original music (which I believe Carmel won with in 2005), its all copied.
LionBaitProductions 1 year ago
@LionBaitProductions Hey, my bad dude. you're correct. It makes since that its not a rip off, since they just played symphony 1 and 2. A rip off could have had blue shades, and the canyon.
I prefer original music for marching programs because of this. Although I wouldn't really consider playing the music from Frameworks or Spin Cycle as a show would be a rip off, since they've only been played by one group before.
