  • I remember this one from way back when... something like the early 90s or so. I was terrified of the giant squid, but on the whole, the ride was one of my favorites.

I was sad to see it go, but it had its time in the sun, and I guess kids nowadays wouldn't understand the whole "Captain Nemo" connection, so it probably wouldn't make much money unless they tied it into Finding Nemo.

  • much better than the finding nemo ride theyve turned it into! if they were going to turn it into anything why not base it on the movie atlantis or the little mermaid?

  • 2:48 Damn mermaids you scary!!!!

  • disneykand opened in 1963?

  • @cadler13 Disney opened in 1955...this ride oepend in 1959. :)

  • Dope$

  • what a great ride. i think disneyland's best era was from the opening of this to the opening of star tours.

  • Great video

  • Hahaha the sea dragon and the dog are great!!

  • LOL im sorry the dog made the whole video just funny.

    you just see:

boy, boy, boy, sea dragon, girl, DOG, boy.

  • This was actually good! I like the octopus at 1:29.

  • were there really real fish bac then?? :OOO

  • Those mermaid dolls are the scariest thing I've seen in my life!

  • Atlantice! WTF?!? A dog?

  • WTF was with the Dog!

  • the dog made me fall out of my chair

  • what the hell at 4:39 is that a dog

  • @ 4:39 lol!!! i rofld

  • did that squid really get that close to the sub? that would have scared the hell out of me.

  • Some of the fishes are Real in these days.

  • 4:39 WTF

  • You took the words right out of my mouth!

  • The ice caps and the barracudas creeped me out.

  • wow to tape a ride in 1959 cameras cost alot in the olden days these people must have been wealthy

  • it was filmed by disney for the T.V. special on its opening

  • ha HA! take THAT florida!! >:D uhm..no offense to anyone...but i was just stating, that THIS submarine ride is WAY more interesting than the one they had in florida.... :I

  • Disagree. The Nautilus beats nuclear subs anyday.

  • @SpongebobFreek Ehhh... guess again! WED took the bare bones of yours - where they thought in many cases they fucked up - and built ours, correcting as many of the Disneyland mistakes as they could while at the same time giving it an ACTUAL theme. Hence our subs had raked stairs, not the stupid spirals, and had two extra passengers per sub by getting rid of the stupid sonar display on the bulkhead... to name just a few. So, in conclusion... TAKE THAT California! ;)

  • @DeepSixed300 Lol :)

  • I still love the Shaggy Dog randomly looking out a porthole. Maybe a boy was riding the ride and he turned into the dog just then? lol

When I was 5, I rode this for the first time (early 80's). The mermaid that's swimming toward the subs scared the crap out of me, and she looked like paint was chipped off of her face. They all looked like corpses, and I was sure that one was going to crash through my window, killing us all. LOL zombiemaids!

  • the dog in the window is a nice touch

  • Wow this was nothing like the ride i rode on as a kid during the 90s which only had STATUES. Wish I was around when the ride was this good.

  • wow... it's amazing how-- they were able to... create that! I mean, wasn't that in the 70's ? Why do the mermaids look like BARBIEs??!! lol wowzer

  • jeepers! isnt the future-ish time just wonderful-ish!!!

  • This was made back when the It's a Small World ride was born. They didn't have the right technology to make the ride-mermaids look more lifelike. But the sea monster was a little TOO goofy.

  • i rode this ride everytime i went to disneyland

from 62- the 90''s, the new version of

it (nemo) isn't nearly as good.

one of the best rides DL ever had!

  • they had real fish ? wow...

  • No, there were no real fish, this is just when everything worked lol.

  • For this video there was footage of real fish spliced in. There wouldn't have been enough room for the fish to live in, the water in the lagoon is hyper-chlorinated to keep it clear, any fish would die within hours of entering the lagoon.

  • And they did that because real fish would make the water dirty, which would make it hard for guests to see anything out of their portholes.

  • Comment removed

  • @klpeekl2000 also it would be imposible for the fish to come to the sub at the exact moment the ride audio talks about a sertain fish

  • This ride was what I most looked forward to whenever my family surprised me by taking me to disneyland. Now i live 10 minutes from disneyland and theres this finding nemo junk that doesnt even feel like a real submarine ride.

  • the octopus and the squid look great with the water adding to the free animation of the flow of the tentacles and stuff

didnt thay use real mermaids back then and not the kreepy anamatronic ones? rotflol

  • Haha the mermaids are hilarious they look like the mermaid barbie my mum bought on my 6 biirthday

  • Hee hee, that they do. But they were still cool when I was 6 years old (and now, in these vids). ;)

  • the mermaids are life sized barbies wat a ripoff

  • Not a ripoff!! That was really cool back in the day. That there were mermaids at all AND a sea serpent made this ride pwn!!! RESPECT THE SUBS!!!

  • WTF is the Yeti from the Matterhorn doing on Submarine Voyage. And I tell you, those sharks and other props cannot be the real thing. The real things were not a realistic as they are portrayed in this video.

  • I hope you're just joking, otherwise that's not the yeti- it's the Shaggy Dog. That movie was probably being promoted at the time, and they threw that bit in for a joke. Great movie! As for the props/animatronics, all I can say is that they were new at this time and in perfect working order most likely. I'm sure as time went by they became less cool looking due to all the stress from being underwater. Anyone know for sure?

  • I just relaized after wathcing the vid again that tregnier279 must mean the footage of ACTUAL sea life. To my knowledge this was added in by Disney for this special, just to enhance the video. I wonder how many people felt jipped when they rode it for the first time? "What? No real fish? I was shown REAL fish on the television!!" lol

  • did they put real fish long time ago?

the fish in this video looks pretty realistic...

the old sub ride looks better then the one now :C

  • Thank you!!! I haven't seen the mermaids since I was 5 years old. Some people posted footage of this ride in the 90s but I did not see the mermaids.

  • did they change the head on the sea serpent over the years? I only got to ride the original subs once when i was 3 and from wat i can remember the head looked different. And i also heard that the sea serpent is in the finding nemo sub ride too. is any of wat ive said true? thanx

  • the serpent is in the new ride, in the same spot he always was, except he is now a rock formation.

  • yeah, i looked for him in my last trip. i just got back today. i rode it twice but i cudnt see the serpent. was the rock formation inside the waterfall thing or outside?

  • inside. i think. i dont remember.

  • i thought i heard that they took the serpent out i heard that on a clip on youtube

  • It seems to me that by the time I started riding Submarine Voyage, the sea serpent's head had become much more stationary than what you see in this video.

  • A lot of the animatronics on the ride got dumbed down as the years passed because they broke down too often. When I last rode the original ride, pretty much every big animatronic on it were converted into statues. Such a shame.

  • i wanna ride that

  • the stringray and the fishes are lifelike in movements are they real or animatronic?

  • No the ones that look real were actually real fish that were filmed somewhere else. The rest lest fluent fish were animatronics and statues from the attraction. However real fish were intended to be in it, but the diesel fuel the subs used would kill the fish, which is what happened to the real mermaids' hair.

  • my grandfather did the sound effects for this ride

  • That background submarine humming noise is the sound from the movie 20,000 leagues under the sea Disney made. I watched it the other day.

  • why was there a dog in one of the windows

  • It's supposed to be the Shaggy Dog from the Disney movie "The Shaggy Dog". When this ride opened in June 1959 "The Shaggy Dog" was playing in the theaters at the time.

  • This is absolutely awesome archival footage, thank you so much for posting it.

  • Eeek the giant squid is disgustingly life like I hate squids and the fact that their are monster squids in reality is scary as hell, lol at that mermaid haha.

  • Thank you so much! I was looking for video of what it was like originally! I wish I could've seen it myself...

  • to bad it is gone it is so cooooooooooooool thanks for the great video

  • Now it's back!!!! Except, Finding Nemo came along with it!!!

  • @ around 2:54, those mermaids look like possesed dolls.

  • I wish there was a retro Disneyland, everything was so cool back then ..

  • Everything works!!!!

  • Back in the day this attraction was amazing.

  • thanks a lot for uploading this. But what was with the dog at 4:38?

  • Tightness! That was quite a treat. Oh, and to answer the question made by the guy at the end, yes, that was everything you promised me.

  • That guy at the end is Art Linkletter. He also co-hosted the opening day of Disneyland in 1955.

  • Ah. So the original audio of the ride was different than it was in the 90's.

    Coo stuff.

  • I don't think that was an original audio of the ride. That audio was made specifically for this TV special. The audio for the ride itself was unchanged, although I don't think the sea serpent was added until a couple years later.
