This prototype was financed by the National Motorcycle Museum, not Norton themselves. It was Brian's plan from 1995 to build this beast but wasn't able to due to funding until 2007. The heating issue has been sorted, it was mainly due to a puncture in the radiator from a stone which caused it to overheat
This is one awsome sounding bike, I think you find there is going to be a 700cc model raced in the tt in the future. There will also be a road model built. For those that don't remember the rotaries, they were banned in the past for being too fast. Well there was an arguement on cc. Can't wait to see it return.
Some people on here, retards like tomio145 just don't understand the monumental greatness of this brilliant machine. I'm so excited for the release I wee'd a little bit. The figures are mind blowing 170+bhp/130kg. Just take that in for a minute.......................................nice isn't it. That snappy reving engine will be begging to be thrashed. God I can't fookin wait.
The stats sound nice, but there are some major drawbacks from using a rotary engine. The main issue is heat: Wankels put out a lot of heat, sometimes too much for a bikes cooling system to keep up with without substantial detuning, and even then, they'll roast the the electronics, hoses, and riders. Not only that, but compared to modern piston engines, rotary bike engines don't really produce much power. It's a nice idea, but one that likely won't work anytime soon.
I'm sorry these "draw backs" you speak of are not quite true. Yes there is an issue of heat but Mazda figured that problem out long ago using a different exhaust return.
As for power you are very wrong, this has the capacity of a 588cc piston bike but the size of a 250 engine yet it is producing 170bhp, thats GSXR1000 numbers.
If you made a 1000 rotary engine power figures would be around the 300bhp mark.
It also has torque everywhere, downside is just no engine breaking.
Hold on, why would engine breaking be a downside, doesn't it mean safer entry into a corner withought sliding sideways? also two strokes have no engine breaking and nobody told them it was a downside lol.
2 strokes do have engine breaking, its very slight in comparisdon to 4 stroke. takes any bike and whe you roll of the power pull the clutch in and you will see what its like to ride a rotary engine
I would imagine what they will do is what yamaha have done with the new R1, where they still allow a small amount of fuel to go through so the engine is still working and still giving slight power to the rear so a bit of grip

lol... You'd think that if a company put thousands of dollars and research hours into a bike, you'd figure they'd at least fix a fucking simple heat issue. What's this about power? 170 bhp ya wanker.
all race engines that run dry sumps its good to do this,
builds oil pressure yes , the engines still undeer no load at all so is not damaging, more damaing if you let the engine idle with low pressure and foul plugs,!
wow i didnt know that(obviously) thanks man i learn a little bit more about rotary every day! check out my page i have a few of my own rx so far. My favorite so far is my 73 rx2<3. a bit of work ahead but its damn near close :)
i used to love watching these wankel nortons at cadwell park in different guises, did spondon or harris used to do the frames, they did have problems because of the lack of engine braking, these machines should be racing and on the road ,weve got better materials and ime sure we havent lost the engine builders, just the money men i suppose
good question im sure a road version would have some adjustment to the engine to help engine life, boost low end/midrange power. it would maybe even be slightly detuned,a lower rpm ceiling or less ponies? but who cares, thousands buy unreliable prillers or old dukes on asthetics alone. i would sell my left ball for one of these just for all the techno naughty parts
I like the instantaneous throttle response. How long would a roadgoing one last between engine rebuilds, assuming it was maintained correctly, not thrashed when cold etc ?
check out the awesome vent duct in the tail and the it has telescopic inlets 588cc with 165real bhp on tap. it is a wonder why they arent mass producing these bikes
Please sell this in america....PLEASE!!!

This may be a huge step for motorcycle engine design of the future
as Oxfordcure said, imagine a 1000cc version or even a 750cc and how light and nimble it would be with the massive amount of power.

race bikes dont have a tick over if you dont rev it, it dies plus its made to be hammered
tomio145 3 years ago
whats with rotary mechanics revving them up soo much at the start. especially with 20b or the four rotor? building oil pressure?

This engine does not have an internal oiling system it burns oil 1:40 rato like a two stroke so the lubrication is in the fuel.
Jamesbowman777 3 years ago
I'd love these to go into full-on production again, more rotary R+D is needed!!
