@davideerickson Thanks Dave. I'd never scrolled all the way down there before. It doesn't set a cookie and remember though, I have to click it every time?
if you dislike the new search page google allws you to switch i back you can either scroll to the bottom off ALL the pages and click swith to basic version or you could just put &sout=1 after the search adress at the vary top of your screen and click enter
I absolutely hate what google has done with the images search, so now I use altavista to search for images instead. That picture hover page in front of the page when you click on the image drives me nuts .
If I disable javescript it is back to the good old interface, only the hover page thing isn't disabled completely.
Dont like it if i'm honest - The removel of URL info under the image is a pain (you have to hover over the image for this info- Which takes longer). There is an option to change back to basic (original) view at the bottom of the results however.Changed to this new view today for me on IE8 - Firefox on my desktop is still using the original view.
FAIL
How can I turn this off? It's horrible.

@ih8grep Scroll all the way to the bottom of the image search results. At the very bottom there is a "Switch to basic version" link. Click on it.

@ih8grep I didn't try it. Interesting. You'd think they'd let you set your preference.

@davideerickson Which is why the fail was in capital letters :). I found a greasemonkey script for Firefox that appends &sout=1 to the url
and turns it off, but that's a hack and I would have preferred something native.
