My grandpa bought his 63 chevrolet impala new back in the days. Just think 2 grand for a old chevy, the style, preformance, and value of this car. Now a days you can't even find a car like this anymore. All of these impalas are probably in the junk yard or already be made into new car metal. I am so dissapointed my grandpa traded his chevy in back in the days for a new impala. I am trying to get this baby back. It's probably gonna cost me a whole load of money. Which really isn't fair.
What's especially amazing is to realize what they had come from in just ten years! In 1953 Ford had a 239 CI V-8 that dated back to 1932 and Chevrolet had a six cylinder that dated back to 1929, neither of which put out much over 100 HP! This was the high point of the automobile industry in this country! To think you could buy these hot rods right from the factory for about $3,000, then in a few years it was all destroyed by the government!
I think both of those cars are much better than the plastic shit they call cars today they sure have a lot more room atleast and who cares about fuel economy it was probably 5 to 10 bucks at most to fill up the thing
I'm not sure if this is a fair comparison, because the Chevy Impala was a lighter car than the Ford Galaxie 500... and everybody knows that in a "straight-out, hole-shot" drag, the car with the highest power to weight ratio always wins, (other things being equal). I'll bet the Galaxie 500 felt better, heavier granted, but more "quality"... Actually I really like both cars... I'll take either one, Thanks, and drive off happy!
what a joke. This came at the time when Ford was dominating NASCAR. Granted the 409s were fast on drag strips, but they would and did blow up trying to catch Fords on super speedways. As far as overall quality is concerned, the G.M. offerings were tin cans compared to Ford products.
I'll presume Chevy was running a 409. Not that Ford's 390 was a dog, but I hope Chevrolet didn't consider that their top performance offering. That would truly be misleading and unfair.
The Ford is a lot heavier. Galaxies were very nice cars for the day. Ford obviously designed it as a passenger car 1st, and HUGE was the way to go. Not taking a thing away from the Impala, which I like too.
The power to weight ratio is not the same.
The Impala is clearly a better street racer, but which car looks better, rides better has the best features? You be the judge of what you prefer, but i really like the Galaxy.
I'm not convinced the Chevy mill was better. It had an advantage
I have studied this film many times. If you'll notice, when the ford starts to gain or pull away, the driver gets off the gas. In the dragrace, the ford takes him at the light and lets him go by. I have raced fords and chevys and a big block ford does not perform like that.
The 409 came out in late '61. Looks like the Ford has a 3x2 406 rated at 405HP while the chevy has a 2x4 409 rated at 425 horse power. Would have been a good race either way. The four doors on the Impala (looks like a biscane to me , but then I didn't pay a lot of attention to 4 doors back then) might have helped it off the line in an actual drag race.
@SirJGraystone I think they were both stick, you can see the cars lurch a bit. I thought you got more HP from a manual trans , because automatic trans sliped a bit, till in top gear there was TCC lock up, not sure if AT's had a TCC back then.
Back in the day you sat down with the salesman in the showroom and you could practically order any engine with the bodystyle you picked. That goes for most everything else. You custom ordered it to your liking.
oh,..and one more thing like i said before a few months ago ...this was done by chevy ,,,,and i will bet this ford had the 406 and i will tell you why ...if the chevy actually out powered the much larger 427 c.i ford...i am sure chevy would have bragged that there 409 out ran the bigger ford 427 .....and i have a hard time believe even back in the day that ford wood offer its top 427 in a 4 door sedan car
So why am I dumb? Because I know for a fact that while the GM 409 engine may have had an impressive 425 HP, it didn't have the cubes of the 427 Ford, (425 HP,) nor did have the torque. The Chevorlet had 425 Ft. lbs of torque while the Ford had 480. Torque doesn't lie! Horsepower does.
@PlainzRyder i just found something out just a bit ago about chevy back in the day ...some of these cars were prepped by chevy big time and some of them were actually a 427 and passed off as a 409 ...but it is still fun to watch ....my pic wood be the gal
@galaxylane ...ahhh..yes they did ..it was not the typical big block chevy [ mark iv] design motor,,they made a [w] 409 [427] but were passed off as a 409 ...and like i said in another post..i will bet this ford was a 406 cuzz if it was a 427 chevy would have bragged about how their smaller 409 out ran a bigger 427 ford
@galaxylane sorry for butting in; 1963 Chevrolet Impala:
Engine code QM
cyl. no. 8
CID 427
Horsepower 430
Comp. ratio 13.5:1
Carb 2x4bbl
Trans. manual.
I had one restored years ago (283 SS Conv.); the garage send me a copy of the original data sheets. Colors, trims, assembly plants, engines... 427's were offered; don't know about production numbers.
Just for the record, I like 'em both. The Chevy 409 was a real runner, but so was the Ford 406. Both were darned fast in their day. And yeah, so was the Plymouth 413.
i like both ford and chevy but on this one imma go with the galaxy more unique and it has a nicer style more little details plus the impala is way too played out i wanna roll in something that's not as common then again that's just me
They should have had a '63 Plymouth with the 413 or 426 wedge it would have been Plymouth,Chevy Ford in that order. By the way this was not a commercial, but an internal GM training film shown to dealers & sales people. My dad was a Chevy salesman back in the day & they were shown these films by the the Chevy zone reps.
well of coarse you will see more fords then say buicks olds pontiacs ..or packards and so on ..most popular cars done are fords and chevy's ...and you will see more 55/57 chevy's then fords , but step back and look at the bigger picture and i would have to say fords and i say this cuzz how many chevys from the 20's to the early 50's do you see?..32 fords are everywere .40 ford are everywere ...everyone knows what a 40 ford looks like but most dont know what a 40 chevy looks like
Wow... I didn't notice the Impala was a 4 door till I read the comments. That is RARE to have a 409 in it. But to the matter at hand ; If you will pay attention to the cars when they lunge forward, the ford does it 3 times. THat would designate it as a 4 speed. The impala, only once. I believe that car had a powerglide, since it is a 4 door car. The ford did jump ahead out of the hole, but the impala came back and drug the ford all the way to the end. Point being, ford SUX !!!!! :-)
Hey KOD Beast, look @ my race, I, didn't bash anybody nor did I comment on this video, just pointed out what I had, what he had and we ran, no biggy, yes i've seen some 409's that can move, so my man sounds like you might be a bow tie kinda guy, it's all good, personally I thought that chevy shoulda been faster but..............
@wolverine390 I was just commenting on the part that this video was a joke. I will say I'm more of a chevy guy, but there are plenty of Fords and Mopars I really do like, mainly the full size cars. I just get tired of people who only consider pony cars to be real muscle cars. The big cars had it going on.
@KoDBeast I thought you were commenting on my race with a 409, check it out if you haven't seen it, we ran all makes, some we beat, some beat us, it's called racing!!! By the way your chevy is nice, driven a little slow but that's OK. Enjoy!
@wolverine390 Some of both, but i'll look at some of the other races. And thanks for the comment, but that old video of me driving is when it had a 72 or so 350 in it, and I was new to driving the car. I plan to record a some new footage of it with the 409 in it.
@03bayouboy If it were a Ford Comerical, the Ford would win. But I dont get why people complain and fight over wich car is better. I mean, they are BOTH better cars than anything any maker makes today. And they are BOTH beautiful cars!! lol
I don't know about '63, but a guy in the town I came from had a '66 Caprice 4-door hardtop with a 427 w/ two 4 barrels. There only 2 cars in town (small town) that were faster. one was a '64 ford custom 2-door sedan w/ 427& 4-speed, the other was the local Highway Patrolman.
Looked like the Ford had the dual four barrel carb setup to me. Notice @ 1:52 it looked like the Ford driver was banging a gear with that dip in the front fender. I love the sound of those V8 engines. For all you gone in 60 seconds crowd remember what Richard Petty once said about making power. "There's no substitute for cubic inches"!
ford..[F]or [O]utstanding [R]eliability & [D]ependability ...or americans oldest car company ..remember..ford is family owned not government owned ...and the leader of trucks in the whole world for 34 years .no other truck manufacture can say that.
@390merc65 i heard that family owned but look whos the most that ppl chose to fix cars i mean go to a car show and tell me how many fords u see all fixed up and how many buicks oldsmobiles or CHEVROLETS u see....
@fresko744 so like i said ..there are more 20's to early 50's fords restored or hot rodded then any other car..the 1930's have to be a real sweet spot for fords ..there are tons of them around , but not so many chevy's...actually a guy 10 miles from were i live has a 46 ford as a daily drive 460/c6 car .i live in P.A and i go to 99% of the car shows in carlisle and Hershey and i think they are the largest car shows on the east coast
@390merc65 WHO LIKE hot rodSSS I DONT MY HOMIE OWNS A 49 CHEVROLET BOMB DELUXE BUT I UNDERSTAND IF U WANT TO RACE GET A FORD OR IF U WANT TO CRUISE GET A CHEVROLET
The first time it looked like the Ford got the Chevy off the line, then the Chevy pulled all the way down the track. Running 0 to 100 in 13.2 seconds was fast back in '63. The cars were a lot lighter, and they had strong engines, but tires weren't too great. I kind of agree with MaximusRelaximus about the Chevy driver. He does have that look.
Acceleration in a straight line is all these full size power houses could hope for. The suspension and steering on these cars are so lazy and soft it's like trying to steer a wet mattress down the road.
@wolverine390 I recall in that video the tranny in the 409 was a powerglide. A powerglide in dual quad 409 is a waste, chevy never originally built the 409 with automatics (unless you had a 340.) But even that doesn't truly matter, its the driver that does the work, the car is just a way down the strip. Its not that i dont like Fords or Galaxies, they're sweet cars, but don't bash a car just because you barely beat one.
This may have been done early in the model year, as that looked like a 3X2 bbl carbed 406 under the hood of the Ford. 427's would come in February 1963, with either 1 or 2 X 4 bbl carbs. There was a 20 hp increase between the 3X2 406 and the 2X4 427, which put the 427 up to 425 hp to match the 2X4 bbl 409 in the Chevy.
MUSCLE CAR REVIEW MAGAZINE DID A BEST 3 OUT 5 SHOOTOUT ABOUT 2-3 YEARS AGO. CHEVY 409 VS 427 FORD, CHEVY TOOK THE FIRST 3 RUNS, END OF STORY, OH YEA 5-3=2,
Im glad this video was put up. I work with a guy that has a Galaxie 500 and a guy that has a 62' Impala (not a 63' but close enough) and they go back and forth all the time on who's car is top.
Im going to have to play this video when I get in tomorrow.
What I should do is get them to do a couple quarter miles, tape it and put the video up.
Long story but to make the things fair Chevy shouldn't have been allowed to run The Mark IV block. It wasn't sold to the public yet. so later the mopar hemi and overhead cam ford were banned. Bill France said the hemi wasn't a true production motor, so in 1966 it was. the street hemi was born. well it was too fast so it was running handicapped later on. some times at under 400 cubic inch or with restrictor plates.
nascar didn't want the cars getting too fast, it was dangerous. the tires weren't good enough to just keep getting faster with ever race. plus nascar wanted chevy in the game, and they didn't have a engine to compete against ford or mopar starting in 1964. In the end GM kinda dropped out of Nascar anyway even thou they were running the Mark IV block not the W motor.
Pollution standards did in the muscle cars more than anything, insurance companies, high price of gas were all part of it too. Plus the public interest went way down to starting in 1970; the fad/craze just wasn't there like it used to be. Plus the car companies had other things to worry about like safety standards and just staying alive period. Muscle wasn’t all that important to the buying public for a while, it wasn’t all that profitable after 1970.
yeah both cars offered a proformance package...but i will bet the ford only had the 406....becuase if the chevy went up against the 427 ford and actually beat it..chevy would have bragged all about how they out ran a 427 ford against a 409 chevy ..nuff said
@cadrolls1 you are wrong...listen closely..the guy said both cars have factory offered preformance engines....[not the top of the line factory hipo engines ] as you said..the 406 was a factory offered preformance engine..but not the [TOP..427] engine by ford..
i still say if chevy really did beat the ford 427 ,,the would of bragged about how their smaller 409 beat a bigger ford 427...
@390merc65 -that's for damn sure, and the 409's didn't touch the 427. it was proven, but those chevy-biased hot rod magazines won't say that because it would threaten their money-making chevy hype
@devja71 yeah how bout it...and i am not sure, but i cant see ford putting the top of the line hipo motor they had back then in a 4 door sedan ...but i guess anything was possible back then ..on some cars you could get power windows for the rear glass and have roll up windows in the front ...ford did offer a galaxie 500 xl 4 door but that might only be in 64 ..i know you could get a wagon with factory bucket seats and console back in the day ..and chevy did offer a 6cyl impala ss
@390merc65 Ford did everything that it could to deal with the weight problem with this car. They took out all of the sound deadener, stripped off the rubber window moldings and took out the carpeting. Eventually, they were forced to omit this car from racing at California's WinterNational event. I believe they came back for 64 though.
@cadrolls1 ..ford made lightwieght galaxies for racing, but this car in the vid i dought was stripped ..yes the gal was heavier then the chevy , but i dought very much this car in the vid came with the top of the line 427 ...this is the 406 car....i am sure chevy would have bragged about it in thier advertizements at the time saying ..[look our chevy with a smaller motor out ran the ford with a larger displacement ]....and lets face it.its a chevy commercial ,,who is gunna win?
@390merc65 One year earlier, and the Ford would have won as this was Chevrolet's answer to Ford. We must concede that Chevy won this match as that was why this car was made in the first place. Ford probably came back strong the following year. This is exactly why G.M. and Ford and Chrysler are no longer allowed, by law, to sponcer their own cars. The horsepower race would have gone on and on and on if the Government did not step in. Ford has had their share of victories too. Let chevy have this.
@cadrolls1 i dont know anything about it being outlawed for a car company to sponcer their own cars .., but the horse power race did go on and on ..hemi mopars?.boss 429's?,,it was insurance that killed the h.p race ..this competitive thing went on long before 63 and pontiac was also part of it ,,if anything between ford and chevy it went back to 32 ..chevy came out with a 6 .so ford came out with the v8 ,even studebaker had hipo version of its own cars
@cadrolls1 oh..how can i forget the [S.O.H.C 427'S?]..AND THE SHORT LIVED TUNNEL PORT 302'S ..MAYBE NASCAR DIDNT LIKE IT AND WANTED TO PUT A CAP ON ALL OF THIS..BUT THE H.P.RACE DID CONTINUE ONE 1/4 MILE AT A TIME
FORDS [S,O,H,C, 427'S ] WAS SO GOOD...CHRYSLER WAS SCARED AND WAS DEVELOPING A DUAL CAMMER MOTOR OF THIER OWN TO COMPETE WITH THE FORDS BUT WAS TO COSTLY AND IT NEVER CAME TO BE
@390merc65 The Horsepower came way down in the early 70s. This was due to two things. The manufacturers were being harrassed by the insurance companies and the gasoline shortage of "74". Eventually, the horsepower did come up in order for the American manufacturers to compete with offerings from Germany and Japan.
secodvr .... I was there ! bottom line is any make with the right guys doing the work and tuning etc ... were competitive and usually won.I ran a 62 "406" Galaxie and never lost a street race including mopars and 409 chevs. at the track I lost to the big name guys who were sponsored, towed to the track etc.just the way it was. the z-11s were strong as they ran afx if I recall or us/s . what happened when the t-bolts emerged ? they kicked every bodies ass usually right ? ford vs chevy bullshit !
LOL, I'm surprised that the chevy only won by a car length. The chevy was faster, everybody nows that. it weighs less, has more HP, also may have less driveline weight spinning with the motor.
Why not take the chevy up against a 63 Mopar max wedge car and see what happens
well if ford was so great, then why couldn't they build that car to outrun the impala ?? Hmm... sounds like a little bit of jealousy to me.. the ford blows. there is no reason why Chevrolet would have rigged that race. And if they wanted to be real assholes, they could have brought out a Z-11 Impala to just totally blow the doors off the galaxie. And lets remeber, the impala's and the w-engines set numerous records and won championships in the 60's.
@secodrvr -you're just another chevy-biased magazine reader that's gullable. no reason chev would've rigged? IT'S A CHEV COMMERCIAL. check your history from better sources than the chevy-biased magazines and you'll see the 427 galaxie's where legendary for good reason. keep in mind those hot-rod magazines are sponsored by parts companies who make their $ much easier by pimping chevy parts, and decades of minimizing the once-legendary fords and replacing the vacuum with chevy b.s is their bread
Come on guys, get a grip...this was 50 years ago-if someone wanted to GIVE you that "shitbox" would you take it? Just enjoy the vidio for what it is...and it is what it is.
@smithwicks2 Either one of these "shitboxes" would be worth a small fortune today and don't you forget it! My Grandmother had a "63" BelAir. It was a beautiful car. It rode VERY well too. Better than MOST cars of today. We went all over New England in that big, comfortable car, as a family. It was not a "shitbox". You would turn your new car in today if you could spend 10 hours driving either of these cars. I know. I own a new Cadillac and it actually rides worse than my Grandmother's BelAir.
@cadrolls1 -i believe it. nothing beats those big-old coils that put ride over anti body-roll safety etc etc. i used to ride in an 62 impala for a bit in the 80's and loved the bouncing and pirate-ship handling. even the rear-leaf fords rode good too
@devja71 Our house keeper had a 63 Galaxie. It rode nicely too. She needed shock absorbers though. Ford alway gave their cars more spring travel though so it wasn't as noticable. It was only when she hit a big dip that the whole car came crashing down................................hard!
What a bunch of BS from Shitrolay. Did you see the geek driving the Shitbox? If Chevy wanted to use an "amateur" driver then why didn't they have Dinah Shore drive the Wimpala as she babbled out "See the USA in your Shitrolay..." Because of that jingle I never liked Dinah Shore or her singing.
Who cares who won ! I am going to buy the car I want not the Quickest , because there is always someone Quicker ! although montenero69 has a good point
the 63 ford is a 406 cu. in . 405 hp and Chevy is the 409 cu. in. 425 hp . what did you expect. the chevy only won by about a 1 car length ! It weighs about 200 lbs less than the Galaxie and why did not the Galaxie have the 427 cu. in / 425 hp ? because the outcome would be much different.
It wasn't the ford but a road side "flare" they popped to signal when to "pass" for the test.
Take the video for what it is, a 1950's advertisement. Its not an honest, unbiased review, and as show in the ad industry, it's always bad when you have to compare yourself to the competition.
LOL! Amazing what advertisers used to get away with back then. In the drag race test, it looks to me like the Ford has a healthy lead on the Chevy off the line! Watch closely at 1:34 seconds into the video..... there is an odd editing clip where the film jumps and magically, the Chevy is out front of the Ford! Amazing! When you can't win fair and square, CHEAT!
Hot Rod magazine ran a story years ago about a California racer that was blowing everything away in his 409 Impala in NHRA drags circa 1963. It worried Ford so much they sent some factory reps to spy on him and they actually accused him of cheating. At one event his car was running slower than usual but he still managed to win. He later found the secondaries on his carb were not working, he had been running on only 2 barrels..the Ford reps went back to Dearborn with egg on their faces.
Could be..... I'm not saying the 409 isn't (wasn't) bad ass.... my point is that THIS particular video clip was obviously edited because, in THIS test, done by Chevrolet, THIS particular Ford was obviously winning or they wouldn't have to fool with the video! Nascar stats for 1963 showed Ford OWNED the oval tracks back then.... Fireball Roberts, Parnelli Jones, Fred Lorenzen, Ned Jarrett, and more.... they all won in Fords in '63. The Hot Rod story might be hard to find.
@mrcrusherblackwell -hot rod magazine will never tell the full story, their sponsors main income is chevy parts. they've always been chevy biased. or do you think they swapped an LS1 into a modern mustang to actually be better. croc of shit
@devja71 Chevrolet had two 409 engines for 1963. One was putting out 340 H.P. and the other, 425 H.P. Ford had three choices to counter it. It had one 406 which put out 405 H.P. and two 427s which put out 410-425 H.P. respectively. Since the video indicated that the engines used were the "top performing packages" offered. Ford stopped racing the Galaxie at Winternational (CA.) because of the weight problem. Chevrolet: 3.500 Lbs. vs Ford: 3,823 Lbs. Ford's 0-100=10.57 secs. and Chevy: 0-100=9.4.
We drive only Fords for 3 generations in my family, so I'd go with the Galaxy. Chevies are good too.

@PlainzRyder ur dumb you know that
19mg94 11 months ago
@19mg94
PlainzRyder 11 months ago
@PlainzRyder i just found something out just a bit ago about chevy back in the day ...some of these cars were prepped by chevy big time and some of them were actually a 427 and passed off as a 409 ...but it is still fun to watch ....my pic wood be the gal

They should have had a '63 Plymouth with the 413 or 426 wedge it would have been Plymouth,Chevy Ford in that order. By the way this was not a commercial, but an internal GM training film shown to dealers & sales people. My dad was a Chevy salesman back in the day & they were shown these films by the the Chevy zone reps.

well of coarse you will see more fords then say buicks olds pontiacs ..or packards and so on ..most popular cars done are fords and chevy's ...and you will see more 55/57 chevy's then fords , but step back and look at the bigger picture and i would have to say fords and i say this cuzz how many chevys from the 20's to the early 50's do you see?..32 fords are everywere .40 ford are everywere ...everyone knows what a 40 ford looks like but most dont know what a 40 chevy looks like
390merc65 1 year ago

He does have that look.

wolverine390 1 year ago
@wolverine390 I recall in that video the tranny in the 409 was a powerglide. A powerglide in dual quad 409 is a waste, chevy never originally built the 409 with automatics (unless you had a 340.) But even that doesn't truly matter, its the driver that does the work, the car is just a way down the strip. Its not that i dont like Fords or Galaxies, they're sweet cars, but don't bash a car just because you barely beat one.

I`m BACK GUYS , CHECK OUT THE MUSCLECAR REVIEW MAGAZINE 9/2000 EDITION . FOR THE SHOOTOUT BETWEEN THE IMPALA 409 AND GALAXIE 427.
montecarlo0 1 year ago
This may have been done early in the model year, as that looked like a 3X2 bbl carbed 406 under the hood of the Ford. 427's would come in February 1963, with either 1 or 2 X 4 bbl carbs. There was a 20 hp increase between the 3X2 406 and the 2X4 427, which put the 427 up to 425 hp to match the 2X4 bbl 409 in the Chevy.

Long story but to make the things fair Chevy shouldn't have been allowed to run The Mark IV block. It wasn't sold to the public yet. so later the mopar hemi and overhead cam ford were banned. Bill France said the hemi wasn't a true production motor, so in 1966 it was. the street hemi was born. well it was too fast so it was running handicapped later on. some times at under 400 cubic inch or with restrictor plates.
summitdrinker 1 year ago
nascar didn't want the cars getting too fast, it was dangerous. the tires weren't good enough to just keep getting faster with ever race. plus nascar wanted chevy in the game, and they didn't have a engine to compete against ford or mopar starting in 1964. In the end GM kinda dropped out of Nascar anyway even thou they were running the Mark IV block not the W motor.
summitdrinker 1 year ago
Pollution standards did in the muscle cars more than anything, insurance companies, high price of gas were all part of it too. Plus the public interest went way down to starting in 1970; the fad/craze just wasn't there like it used to be. Plus the car companies had other things to worry about like safety standards and just staying alive period. Muscle wasn’t all that important to the buying public for a while, it wasn’t all that profitable after 1970.
summitdrinker 1 year ago
Nothing sounds better than three holley two barrel carbs kicking in at once!
basham03 1 year ago
yeah both cars offered a proformance package...but i will bet the ford only had the 406....becuase if the chevy went up against the 427 ford and actually beat it..chevy would have bragged all about how they out ran a 427 ford against a 409 chevy ..nuff said
390merc65 1 year ago
@390merc65 The announcer indicated that both cars had the top engines offered. Chevrolet DID brag.......LOL
cadrolls1 1 year ago
@cadrolls1 you are wrong...listen closely..the guy said both cars have factory offered preformance engines....[not the top of the line factory hipo engines ] as you said..the 406 was a factory offered preformance engine..but not the [TOP..427] engine by ford..
i still say if chevy really did beat the ford 427 ,,the would of bragged about how their smaller 409 beat a bigger ford 427...
390merc65 1 year ago
@390merc65 -that's for damn sure, and the 409's didn't touch the 427. it was proven, but those chevy-biased hot rod magazines won't say that because it would threaten their money-making chevy hype
devja71 1 year ago
@devja71 yeah how bout it...and i am not sure, but i cant see ford putting the top of the line hipo motor they had back then in a 4 door sedan ...but i guess anything was possible back then ..on some cars you could get power windows for the rear glass and have roll up windows in the front ...ford did offer a galaxie 500 xl 4 door but that might only be in 64 ..i know you could get a wagon with factory bucket seats and console back in the day ..and chevy did offer a 6cyl impala ss
390merc65 1 year ago
@390merc65 Ford did everything that it could to deal with the weight problem with this car. They took out all of the sound deadener, stripped off the rubber window moldings and took out the carpeting. Eventually, they were forced to omit this car from racing at California's WinterNational event. I believe they came back for 64 though.
cadrolls1 1 year ago
@cadrolls1 ..ford made lightwieght galaxies for racing, but this car in the vid i dought was stripped ..yes the gal was heavier then the chevy , but i dought very much this car in the vid came with the top of the line 427 ...this is the 406 car....i am sure chevy would have bragged about it in thier advertizements at the time saying ..[look our chevy with a smaller motor out ran the ford with a larger displacement ]....and lets face it.its a chevy commercial ,,who is gunna win?
390merc65 1 year ago
@390merc65 One year earlier, and the Ford would have won as this was Chevrolet's answer to Ford. We must concede that Chevy won this match as that was why this car was made in the first place. Ford probably came back strong the following year. This is exactly why G.M. and Ford and Chrysler are no longer allowed, by law, to sponcer their own cars. The horsepower race would have gone on and on and on if the Government did not step in. Ford has had their share of victories too. Let chevy have this.
cadrolls1 1 year ago
@cadrolls1 i dont know anything about it being outlawed for a car company to sponcer their own cars .., but the horse power race did go on and on ..hemi mopars?.boss 429's?,,it was insurance that killed the h.p race ..this competitive thing went on long before 63 and pontiac was also part of it ,,if anything between ford and chevy it went back to 32 ..chevy came out with a 6 .so ford came out with the v8 ,even studebaker had hipo version of its own cars
390merc65 1 year ago
@cadrolls1 oh..how can i forget the [S.O.H.C 427'S?]..AND THE SHORT LIVED TUNNEL PORT 302'S ..MAYBE NASCAR DIDNT LIKE IT AND WANTED TO PUT A CAP ON ALL OF THIS..BUT THE H.P.RACE DID CONTINUE ONE 1/4 MILE AT A TIME
FORDS [S,O,H,C, 427'S ] WAS SO GOOD...CHRYSLER WAS SCARED AND WAS DEVELOPING A DUAL CAMMER MOTOR OF THIER OWN TO COMPETE WITH THE FORDS BUT WAS TO COSTLY AND IT NEVER CAME TO BE
390merc65 1 year ago
@390merc65 The Horsepower came way down in the early 70s. This was due to two things. The manufacturers were being harrassed by the insurance companies and the gasoline shortage of "74". Eventually, the horsepower did come up in order for the American manufacturers to compete with offerings from Germany and Japan.

summitdrinker 1 year ago
LOL, I'm surprised that the chevy only won by a car length. The chevy was faster, everybody nows that. it weighs less, has more HP, also may have less driveline weight spinning with the motor.
Why not take the chevy up against a 63 Mopar max wedge car and see what happens
summitdrinker 1 year ago
well if ford was so great, then why couldn't they build that car to outrun the impala ?? Hmm... sounds like a little bit of jealousy to me.. the ford blows. there is no reason why Chevrolet would have rigged that race. And if they wanted to be real assholes, they could have brought out a Z-11 Impala to just totally blow the doors off the galaxie. And lets remeber, the impala's and the w-engines set numerous records and won championships in the 60's.
secodrvr 1 year ago
@secodrvr -you're just another chevy-biased magazine reader that's gullable. no reason chev would've rigged? IT'S A CHEV COMMERCIAL. check your history from better sources than the chevy-biased magazines and you'll see the 427 galaxie's where legendary for good reason. keep in mind those hot-rod magazines are sponsored by parts companies who make their $ much easier by pimping chevy parts, and decades of minimizing the once-legendary fords and replacing the vacuum with chevy b.s is their bread

I know. I own a new Cadillac and it actually rides worse than my Grandmother's BelAir.
cadrolls1 1 year ago
@cadrolls1 -i believe it. nothing beats those big-old coils that put ride over anti body-roll safety etc etc. i used to ride in an 62 impala for a bit in the 80's and loved the bouncing and pirate-ship handling. even the rear-leaf fords rode good too
devja71 1 year ago
@devja71 Our house keeper had a 63 Galaxie. It rode nicely too. She needed shock absorbers though. Ford alway gave their cars more spring travel though so it wasn't as noticable. It was only when she hit a big dip that the whole car came crashing down................................hard!
