Is there actually a need to talk about Nadal here? Then again it's not like Justin Bieber is being mentioned.
Carlsson could only play on clay because of the knee surgeries, during the time he was playing there was a lot of tough clay competition in those days. Nadal doesn't actually play on fast surfaces at all, a product of the time like all players now. There is no teleporter that works for time travel
Man, this brings back memories. Thanks for posting it mate. I loved watching Carlsson play. HEAVY top. He was kind of like the 80's version of Rafael Nadal. I remember him getting to #3 in the world at one point, but I don't think he finished the year higher than #5 of #6. I wonder what would have happened had he not been forced to retire so early. Didn't he retire at 21 or 22? He had so much spin, I often wonder if guys like Agassi could have taken it on the rise with any success.
@theatlantean2 Hi guy!,i am from spain and i think that you forgot that Nadal won Wimbledon and Australian Open, that means Nadal it´s way better than Carlsson(don´t get me wrong for me Kent its a great player also but just on clay)
@juanannico Oh there is absolutely no question Nadal is much better than Carlsson. I'd say they're not even close, even though I am a big fan of Carlsson (a big fan of both, actually). Carlsson was great, but had nowhere near the mental toughness and determination of Nadal, who I think is just about the most mentally tough athlete in all of sports.
Well Carlsson had 5 surgeries on the knee and retired at 22. He was very much restricted to clay and his game style wouldn't have made it easy to adjust to the much faster surfaces in those days.
Plus Lendl, McEnroe, Becker, Edberg and Wilander were competing for the Slams at the time he was playing.
What a great player he was. It's really too bad he had to quit the game a couple of years after this match. In 1988 he was in his peak form, definitely stronger and fitter than previous years. I would have loved to see him play on into the 90's.

@VedicBuddha Thomas Muster, Hermann Maier and Nikki Lauda, even Carlsson came back from greater adversity than Nadal ever has.

makes muster's forehand seem flat.

Not a problem uploading the video. I just wish I had more of them to upload of Carlsson.
The forehand was very unique, so much topspin, and his backhand didn't lack topspin either.
