I am an orphan from Romania. When l was adopted l was near dead, or half dead. Luckily when l got adopted my mother took me all the way back to the U.S from Romania, and took me to the hospital immediatley. If it wasn't for her, l would have been dead. The worst part about being adopted from Romania though, is thinking about your birthparents... If you were me, l have been through tough times, you would understand how l feel if you were me now..
There were institutions like this all over. I have seen documentaries of similar if not worse places that were in England in the eighties where children with severe learning difficulties and illnesses such as Autism were tied standing up to concrete poles and left to rock back and forth all day. The nurses excuse for this was 'we would never get anything done otherwise'. These treatments were so excepted back then that a documentry film crew were actually allowed to film in these barbaric places

I am from Romania, live there, still and I've lived 20 years near a orphanage.
I was able to see daily as I was returning from school, children beaten by the nurses and ladies that took "care" of them. I have friends that grew in some like this one where they were starving if they were not obeying their rules and were bitten up by older children. What you see here is a piece of cake, comparing to reality.

If couples apply for adopting a child, the state works so bad and slow that it can take years for the child to be able to go home with them. Papers, papers and papers all over again and nothing changes...everything is the same, years pass and the child instead of having a home, stays in that place and couples quit, being tired of waiting and trying.So it's not their fault. It's the states fault.

I worked with a charity for a while visiting orphanages, hospitals and institutions in Romania where many children were left. It seemed that even children with minor disabilities or learning difficulties were cast-off in the same way as those with more severe handicaps, due to the lack of care and attention given, many of them would imitate the behaviour of others and did not develop proper speech or communication even though if brought up elsewhere they would lead a relatively normal life.

I have been working with young adults who came from such institutions, who were, as children, tied to there cots by there arms and feet as there was not enough people to care for the these children are now have permanenet physical disabilities, with legs and arms stuck at odd angles, or 'cot-leg syndrome' as it is often called. Many of the clients I work are unable to walk due to being tied to cots as children. Such practices are not propoganda

I am an orphan from Romania. When l was adopted l was near dead, or half dead. Luckily when l got adopted my mother took me all the way back to the U.S from Romania, and took me to the hospital immediatley. If it wasn't for her, l would have been dead. The worst part about being adopted from Romania though, is thinking about your birthparents... If you were me, l have been through tough times, you would understand how l feel if you were me now..

There were institutions like this all over. I have seen documentaries of similar if not worse places that were in England in the eighties where children with severe learning difficulties and illnesses such as Autism were tied standing up to concrete poles and left to rock back and forth all day. The nurses excuse for this was 'we would never get anything done otherwise'. These treatments were so excepted back then that a documentry film crew were actually allowed to film in these barbaric places

This is not very good journalism. They could have explained more things instead of having these "Artistic" moments of looking at babies, children and Ceaucescu with no discription of anything.

Of course, problematic children are shown here in this film...because they are indeed unwanted children of parents that give them away with the though that an ill child can ruin their lives. And sometimes they become like that because of the bad treatment they receive in such places. Not every orphanage is the same as this one in Romania...but there are many still existing out there...and Romania is just a case...A sad case!

@CalipsoSarah You forgot to say these children are not really adoptable,they all have parents passing the resposability on state only for some period.I'm happy the adoptions are overcontrolled with "papers and papers".We stopped rich or deviant foreigners coming to RO to kidnapp or buy vulnerable children,esp.from the Gypsy nomadic community.These children still have parents with all parental rights so adoption is not at all the first option.

I was able to see daily as I was returning from school, children beaten by the nurses and ladies that took "care" of them. I have friends that grew in some like this one where they were starving if they were not obeying their rules and were bitten up by older children. If couples apply for adopting a child, the state works so bad and slow that it can take years for the child to be able to go home with them. Papers, papers and papers all over again and nothing changes...everything is the same, years pass and the child instead of having a home, stays in that place and couples quit, being tired of waiting and trying.So it's not their fault. It's the states fault.

I worked with a charity for a while visiting orphanages, hospitals and institutions in Romania where many children were left. It seemed that even children with minor disabilities or learning difficulties were cast-off in the same way as those with more severe handicaps, due to the lack of care and attention given, many of them would imitate the behaviour of others and did not develop proper speech or communication even though if brought up elsewhere they would lead a relatively normal life.

I have been working with young adults who came from such institutions, who were, as children, tied to there cots by there arms and feet as there was not enough people to care for the these children are now have permanenet physical disabilities, with legs and arms stuck at odd angles, or 'cot-leg syndrome' as it is often called. Many of the clients I work are unable to walk due to being tied to cots as children. Such practices are not propoganda

Your country has so much dept to China and othe countries, you can't even comprehend, nor the US could pay back in a 1000 years of booming economy, which you definitely don't have. Your only chance to survive is to move to Europe, but not to Romania. We have many countries, but obviously you were not tought the right way.

the incidence of such situation is high because pregnant women dont usually know that some medication harms the fetus. in other situations its the down syndrome , or some dangerous virus or a genetic disease. special schooling is required when children are retarded . but unfortunately , the governments always tried to enroll them in "normal" classes and that harms everybody.

They are Hungarian-Romanians who insist they are Hungarian not Romanian (even though they have Romanian passports). They blame everything bad in their country on Romanians..
