  • LeMond is/was an amazing rider and for the most part an amazing sportsman, the only time i think he was an asswhole is when he discredited armstrong of his wins.

  • doping!

  • At first I was critical of LeMond for winning the 1989 Tour with the tri handlebars. I truly felt back when I first saw it that Fignon deserved to win the 1989 Tour.

But LeMond was a people's champion, and proved his victory in 1989 was no fluke by decisively winning the 1990 Tour.

And since seeing him in the 1985 footage when he helped Bernard Hinault win, and then fighting Hinault's betrayal in 1986, it is true that he could have won at least 5, maybe even 6 tours.

  • LeMond is probably the last winner that wasn't doped. A great champion and a great man!

  • The glory days of tour de France ended after the '89 tour. It was like a family affair then. But nowadays it's being won by $ greedy cheaters. Lemond did not bribe the organization that conducts drug testing but Lance the greedy cheater did. No wonder he passed a lot of tests. Lance is so greedy he's taking all the asses & $ he can get while the class act Greg is still with his wife & would have done the TdF for minimum wage just enough to feed his family. When Lance got rich he left his wife .

  • The more i read about this great sportsman.. the truth wins in the end, keep it up Greg

  • The only clean, American Champion of the Tour de France.

  • His name(LeMond) suggests he has french heritage.

  • "His name (LeMond) suggests he has French heritage"

Many people assume this, but his heritage is actually Irish. The ABC show discussed this about his last name.

  • @nightowl8936 Yes I believe it means "the world".

I didn't know he was of Irish descent. Great time in cycling with Kelly, Roche, and the Irish fans.

  • happier days for lemond...he had such an up and down career..and i know from all ive seen from him he did not retire as he wanted to..i saw a few recent interviews and he is comming across i hate to say a bit abscent minded...i hope he is ok...it amazing to me this was 20 years ago...i was 16 when he won the 89 tour..it was truly a shocking moment in cycling..no one would have thought he could make up that amount of time..in the last 89 TT i belive he was using a 55 tooth chainwheel.

  • Can Armstrong speak French? +1 LeMond....:)

  • Armstrong speaks French

  • @baroh2413

Armstrong's French isn't very good. LeMond's is pretty impressive.

  • I didn't say his french was impressive... but it's better than most americans

  • whose, Armstrong's? Better than complete monoglots, maybe, but not too good. Resorts to infinitives if a sentence is anything more than very basic. In his second book, he recognises that his French isn't up to much.

  • He looks pretty lean here. Now he's gained a lot of fat. We all grow old and fat later.

  • @deltaecho1

Its been more than 20 years ... he's probably better now than you ever were.

  • @nightowl8936

probably. But I didn't become a fat ass like him.

  • Critiqué par Fignon ou Hinault, Monsieur Lemond demeure un grand champion, un exemple de courtoisie. Armstrong devrait bien s'en inspirer!

  • Greg Lemond was my inspiration to learn a foreign language.

  • this man did give so much motivation with my training ..thx a lot and congratulations again in those times, great races....

  • Lemond is a truly great champion,a born winner, his results from the start of his career prove this.Who knows how many tours he could have won if he hadn't been shot,he lost 2 years then and the subsequent effects on his health and performance of the lead left in his body afterwards could've meant perhaps the '91 tour,'92 tours,.....who knows?.For me Armstrongs performances don't add up,no real tour performance until coming back from cancer and joining up with Dr drugs(Ferrari)??? a coincidence?

  • I agree. Meet him in person and he's a great guy. He's the one with the guts and honesty. Love the guy for what he's done

  • I wonder why its so fashionable to bash Armstrong? I admore greg lemond, perhaps mroe than armstrong. but armstrong is still a champion by anyone's standards. To my knowledge, the only tour that there is even a shred of what could be considered proof that he doped was in '99, his first tour, and he went on to win seven more in grander fashion. Admiration is due to both men.

  • but until 2005, Michele Ferrari was his personal Doctor. And everyone knows 'bout Ferrari and performance-enhancing drugs.

I know, I know, 'cause am French that's easier to say, but when I was a kid Greg Lemond and Lance were my heroes. Greg still in my heart but no comment about Lance.

  • he was not his doctor untill 2005 he was never his doctor during his wins in le tour he was before cancer but what people get so worked up on this is he never denounce Ferrari as his friend.

  • I am sorry for you, but you have wrong. Type in google : Lance Armstrong Michele Ferrari.

Michele Ferari was his "Doctor" since 1995.

  • Read Lance Armstrong's war. It is very clear that lance was working with Ferrari in 2004-2005. He ended his public collaboration with him but the author follows Lance on Training rides where Ferrari is present with him in Girona. I am a fan of Lance but let's be factually accurate in our discussion.

  • Greg Lemond is part of the "Golden Era of Cycling" the 80's and his triumphs were indisputable. The American Rider with the Most Class-on and off the Bike-ever. New rider generations should find inspiration from him, instead of Lance.

  • I didn't know LeMond spoke French.

  • That was one of the reasons why they thought so highly of him. He took the time to learn their language and culture and the French appreciate him for it. (Unlike some of the other more recent professional american cyclists...)

  • Greg Lemond and Lance Armstrong are both champions.

  • You said right rennesdinan. I was a supporter of Fignon in '89 (the most beautiful Tour of the last 30 years), but what LeMond did that day of july 89 was incredible. I thank alsa stephantl for the wonderful words about Greg LeMond... So easy to say...

  • another example of the wonderful deep argumentation of the community of LeMond bashers... thank you for your contribution! ;-)

  • @rennesdinan LOL stephantl really had an extensive amount of argumentation to support his opinion! Seriously, LeMond is a guy I really believe did not dope and managed to win against doped riders. In my view, he's the best ever.

  • Okay, and your an IDIOT!!!

  • Greg Lemond is the one true American Tour Champion. Not Lance Armstrong. Not Floyd Landis. Lemond: 3 great tour victories, could have easily been six if he didn't have to give one to Hinault and didn't get shot. No drugs, all guts. Learned French, stuck with his wife and kids. A class act.

  • Totally agree on that... I'm a huge Greg LeMond fan, and I know his position on dopping has been largely critized and has gained him many enemies.

My view is that he's just trying to save his sport, almost alone, and has shown incredible courage in doing so. And his recent revelations during Landis hearing shows he is ready to go very far... My admiration for him just keeps on growing.

  • Thank you! It's very refreshing to know that there are people who believe in Lemond instead of bashing him for trying to uncover the truth. Everybody wants to worship Lance Armstrong as some superhero but the truth is he is the biggest fraud of our time. With all the recent developments in cycling it's hard to sound convincing now that he won clean while everyone else doped.

  • I agree. Lemond has been right on, honest and has guts. Meet him in person and he's a great guy to talk with

  • @lenramirez Agree, plus he won in '89 with gunshot still in his body and in the lining of his heart!!!

  • @lenramirez The best comment I've seen on youtube. Respect!!!!
