This is not a hit and miss. It is a 2 cycle and will hit every stroke if tuned properly. If you notice it has a crosshead so the rod does not connect to the piston.
I believe the hot tube engines are 4-stroke. The hot tube serves in place of a spark plug. The hot tube alone is not enough to ignite the mixture, but the heating from the compression stroke plus the hot tube puts it over the top.
Them flywheels look like they'd break an arm if you're not careful.
