You know, 10 yo Jura costs 18 Euros in Bulgaria. That's five euros more than a standart 3yo blend and five euros less than JW BL. So at that price it has lovely quality and I thank Whyte and Mackay for this extremely reasonable pricing. When most malts cost around 30 Euros, Jura Tenner comes like a blessing.
Hi Ralfy, I recently had a go at the Superstition, and found myself thoroughly disappointed. You mentioned it was a blend of older Juras, but if that's the case, they really must have cut down a lot on the proportion of older whiskies in that version, because it sure tasted very young & harsh to me. Also, I can confirm it tastes a lot like a blended whisky, and quite a bad one at that. It was oily, soapy, excessively sweet (gummibears, or jelly babies, come to mind), and bitter at the same time.
Ralfy, have you tried the Jura Diurach's Own 16yo? I shelled out a few extra dollars for it and i am enjoying it very much so far (two drams) I was wondering about yout thoughts on the spirit?
Ralfy I agree that the Jura 10 year old can be so insipid that it can only be of use in apple juice, but I've got one now which does have some Jura character and complexity, and even can remind you of a Longrow. Would you agree its quite variable?
I'm a Mortlach and Aberlour lover and have just tried the Jura 10 yo... I find it a really good dram, surprisingly so, full of coffee bean and heather aromas, very well balanced, smokey and light pepper with a flinty finish... its a good whisky... better than HP 12 and BV Doublewood... hands down
Sampling the 10 yr old right now...I must say it's quite smooth with a pleasant nose and taste just not the best finish overall not bad for a young whiskey though....I tink without the caramel and bottled at a higher strength it might be better though
@ralfystuff: After sampling a dram, I found it quite nice. Salty on the nose (made me think of the ocean), malty sweet and some faint orange rind. Taste was oaky and creamy with some sweet notes in the finish.
... no, it doesn't state No caramel or chill-filtration so I must presume that the caramel's there although to a lesser extent as it has not impacted much on the finish.
Oops it was a 700er and not a 750! And i haven´t got anything against a bit of oak,just for my taste it didn´t quite fit properly. Oh well its a good thing we don´t all have the same taste,eh!! Thanks for the reviews as always Ralf.
I´ve just finished a jura 21yo 750ml 43%,i suspect for the americans,...yeah,...very woody,..it wasn´t too bad but i found the 10 yo better to be honest,especially when you consider the price of the 21. Maybe it was a bad batch.
Nice review Ralfy. As you say there's quite often discounts on some of the Jura range and the Twitter account @jura_whisky and their facebook page The Diurachs advertises them when it gets the chance.
do you recommend the 16 year old as well? I have seen the 16 for a good price but never picked it up. I don't think I have seen the 18 year old at my bottle shop.
What was your impression of the Jura 21yo? I've found a bottle over here in Sweden at a good price (compared to the specialist shops). It's a shame they bottled it at only 40%, I'd expect a little more 'craft presentation' from an older whisky ;)
Thanks from one of the malty youtube-marathon-watchers!

sorry to hear this, you should e-mail the Distillers and complain. It is clearly not the same stuff I bought two years ago.

It's a decent Malt, many Jura's are, but the 10yo is rather young. I don't yet know the 16yo but will look out for it !

Ralfy any thoughts on the Prophecy, is it worth £50?
chrish12345 4 months ago
@chrish12345
yes and no ! . . . Jura can be hit or miss but still high-priced. This one should be more 'peaty' than it is. I won't be reviewing it.

@chrish12345
the more feed-back I get the more variable some whiskies appear to be. Something the Scotch Whisky Industry needs to address more successfully.

@ralfystuff: Haha, those were my notes for the 16 year old. I guess it must be pretty similar to the 18, then!

Definitely chill-filtered in my opinion.

Man if the 10 year old Jura is like liquid nectar(to me), I'd love to acquire this 18yo.
Great review ralfystuff.

From what you've said, it sounds a lot like a Grants that's been left to mature. Great review, as always, Ralfy.
