I had to study this same scene (but a different version) for my Philosophy of Psychoanalysis class. It's really interesting to learn about all of the things that Freud says about narcissistic behaviour. This is scene is a prime example of that. I don't really know much about opera, but her voice is spectacular!
@stueystu1 im a big fan of both, personally though i think beverly is the best on youtube and carolyn sampson is awesome too, but yeah battle is really great. her recording is amazing on cd, talk about type casting lol. probably her best role.
Fantastic singing, I don't fault her acting, the voice is showing everything, and that's good enough for me! I'd like to hear Maria Jette sing this role, I heard her as Alcina in St Paul, wow!
Indeed! She sang in Milwaukee a year ago, on the recital tour that culminated at Carnegie Hall. Having heard her at the height of her powers, I was deeply saddened, and could only ask "Why?"
This is the best performance of this aria I have seen on youtube in terms of the graceful way Dame Massis moves her mouth as well as her body. She just brings an ultra femininity to this role that is unmatched by any others I have seen.
Did I mention she is also gorgeous?
Although I think Kathleen Battle performs this aria better in terms of her sheer musicality and vocal ability and coloratura, Annick Massis is much better to watch and listen to simultaneously.

Not great coloratura and she has no connection into her lower passaggio. I think she sounds like a chicken on the fast passages... Rosemary Joshua sings circles around her.

Did you see her jaw moving side to side../shaking on the fast bits? Still, I haven't tried this one myself yet!

i like it. her "coldness" comes off as vanity in this song, or at least thats how i feel :)

I like the singing, but what is missing is a sense of unmitigated joy! I neither see nor hear it.

Yeah, Massis CAN be a little bit too cold. Her Da Tempeste is full of wonderful prodigious coloratura, but no feeling at all.

I agree with you. Kathleen doesn't articulate as well and Annick seems to sing more naturally.

I agree with you. Thank you for the sharing ;)

@bubblykings Kathleen Battle is simply perfect as Semele. Massis only wishes to have half the articulation that Battle has.

This is such a beautiful interpretation!

wonderful, she and Battle can fight each other for the best performance of this aria.
