  • Hi Omar, this is Mary.

Thank you for the nice comment. :)

  • Mary

    You are welcome.

  • can you give a list of the supplies you use, because i really want to do stuff like this (even the paper )

  • Holy shit? o__o

    Beautiful.

  • Fantastic work Smecks. Just recently came across your channel and its definately one of my favourites having seen it.

Iv learnt alot from your tutorials and I thank you very much for that.

Iv never used pencil pastels before, but im going to get some having seen your vids and give them a try.

Im curious to know Smecks, do you need to spray the finished work or anything to protect it? and is there special paper or anything that you use?

    Thanks, RM.

  • Hey RedMilitant :)

Thanks for the nice comments! I always spray my finished artwork with a Matte Fixative to keep it from smearing. As for paper, I usually use a medium tooth 90lb canson paper. You definintely want something that has some "teeth" to it.

  • Cheers for the info smecks.

Iv actually tried using the pastels now, and boy do you make it look easy :D

I got the wrong paper for the job, its 120lbs, 200g/m^2, A3 'drawing paper'. Its the only thing I could find that I thought would be suitable.

There seems to be alot of white 'dots' between the pigment (as in its not filling in the gaps or something).

I have another question about pastels if you could help smecks. How do you blend fine detail? my fingers are just too big 4 d job.

  • Iv tried using hair spray to fixate it having read about it on the internet. Surprisingly it works!, though with ever so slight changes in some of the dark tones.

but other than that, I guess its practice which gets the results in the end. the paper I got is a big let down though :( - and whether its the paper or using my finger for smudging thats the problem, fine detail is a real problem to do.

Thanks again Smecks. Your fantastic let me tell you!

  • Sorry for taking so long to respond, i was entertaining family for most of July :)

First, the brand of pastels really does make a difference. I use Rembrandt pastels which are very 'silky smooth' and easy to blend (thanks to Cobi for that valuable tip).

Plus it is also really good to have a set of pastel pencils for fine detail work. When the bigger chalk-like pieces get used a bit, they get that dull/rounded edge and make it impossible to do any small details.

  • Also... as far as blending, I use a blending stump for the fine detailed areas. For large areas I use my fingers or even sometimes a paper towel. Of course, i also end up with very colorful knees by the end of the drawing.

I'll try to put together a video on the different supplies and such that I use. I think that might help?

If you have any more questions, ask away!

  • WOW! :D

  • Waiting for mine =P

Btw ur website wont load on my laptop

  • MIKMA WAS HERE

  • Yaaay!! Its finally done :D

I love it! I finally get to be drawn by Mary herself ^_^

Thank you sooo much for doing this *Huuuug*

Im so favoriting this and its being put as the featured video on my page ^_^

  • do you usualy use fixatiff on your work when ur done? because pastels should make it messy if its not protected :P

  • Yes, most definitely. I use Grumbacher Matte Fixative... its the only brand my local art store carries, but seems to do a fine enough job.

  • oh ok :D

  • Very nice Mary! But a tutorial on sketching would be pretty nice...since I pretty much can't enlarge or make drawings smaller...I just kind of make the exact same picture ish...

Oh by the way, I edited the video, and i'm waiting for it to finish rendering so I can put it up on youtube. It really isn't all that great, but at least I can get some pointers!

  • Yeah, I think a real time tutorial would be good to add ... hopefully I can sort out my lighting issues. I'm either too dark or too washed out. I don't know why I can't seem to find a happy middle ground again lately. *sigh* On a "brighter" note - I shall happily await your video :)

  • Is he a new user on the forum?

    And amazing drawing as usual!

Hope that you'll draw me someday!

  • He's been with me since the days o' the smecks forums and followed me over to flixray. You, Reija, are incredible and yes I will definitely do your picture - though i am going to have a bit of a lull in drawings for the next few weeks while I have company with me. Can you send me a picture through the flixray forums (ie private message)? That would be groovy. I have two others that I have promised to do, but will gladly put yours in the official "to-draw" mix :)

  • That is so awesom Mary. I love watching your drawings.

  • Thank you my friend! I think I still owe you a private message reply but got caught up in this drawing. At least you get a break from my never ending rambling! :)
