I was reasonably sure that the percentage was very low for biologists, physicists and astronomers (All scientists that deal with the origin of the universe/earth/life), but I couldn't find a quote, so I didn't want to mention it. I think the study I'm refering included all kinds of scientists, which means computer scientists and what-not.
Regarding the numbers presented the data is old and polls are biased. 2008 gallop poll was 3% lower vs a BBC poll that was 4 years older (questions? time of day? geographical? etc). It would be nice to know the number of people asked. I doubt it was a number which remotely represented 300+ million. I have 3 siblings. 2 are "atheists", 2 are not. 3 of them attended church. The 2 that believe are the oldest. Age alone can invert a poll.

I often get comments from US citizens about their freedom and their democracy as if the US would be the only country that has that. I have never got any such comments from others than US citizens. It is definitely a true observation that more Americans than people from other countries are very self content and very ignorant about the world outside the US.

I went to one of the biggest state schools in Britain back in the 80's, leaving in 92.

Right throughout schooling, from first school, we were taught about evolution, I remember making paper mache dinosaurs in play group.
He's about 45yrs old, Didn't finish high school. Never had a girl friend, or any friends for that matter. Can't hold down a job. Spends most of the day sitting over his computer online to anything that will reply to him, in a ONE bedroom apartment which he shares with his Mommy.

It´s a shame that time has to be taken from science classes because of argumentation from religious students. It must be extremely frustrating to be a biology teacher in the US. Teachers have a responsibility to try to reach students with reality or at least teach them that evolution is the only scientific explanation for the diversity of life forms, when parents fail so miserably at understanding and accepting the nature of reality as creationist parents do. To put it more concisely, there is no such thing as "original English" just as there is no such thing as an "original" any other language. Language, just like animals, is in a state of constant evolution. England, despite being honored with having the language named after them, is in no sense the "inventor" of English.
English is named after England and all the English speaking countries of the world speak English for reasons that can be traced back to England. In that sense, English comes from England. My point is only that modern English in the UK is no closer to Old English than modern English in any other country. There are no grounds upon which you can claim that the English of England is the "original" English or is somehow inherently superior.
I see a problem in calling evolution the atheist position and not just the scientific position like it is. Of course it creates problems for some theists if it is called the atheist position.
Of course atheists in general don´t have problems with scientific knowledge since atheism doesn´t involve any dogmas it conflicts with. But that atheists don´t have problems with evolution doesn´t make the theory of evolution an atheist position.

Amazing.
I went to one of the biggest state schools in Britain back in the 80's, leaving in 92.
There was a tiny hut in that school with one religious education teacher who had one class a week and only 10 pupils attended voluntarily, and he was actually beaten up for upsetting a girl there with his religious rhetoric (not sure about the whole story)
Right throughout schooling, from first school, we were taught about evolution, I remember making paper mache dinosaurs in play group.

It´s a shame that time has to be taken from science classes because of argumentation from religious students. It must be extremely frustrating to be a biology teacher in the US. Parents obviously also need some lecture so they understand what science is and what evolution is so they hopefully don´t indoctrinate their children in all religious pseudo science there is that confuse people about these topics. Or at least don´t argue with teachers and school boards about things they don´t understand.

Language, just like animals, is in a state of constant evolution. England, despite being honored with having the language named after them, is in no sense the "inventor" of English.

My point is only that modern English in the UK is no closer to Old English than modern English in any other country. I made a bit of a generalization when I said african countries, because a few do have higher rates. America ranks near the middle. The countries with the lowest rate are all very poor. @BusinessEdgeRadio You are entitled to your opinion but I disagree. Being "fat" and poor means that the poor have no access to proper nutrition but must eat what they can afford. Why do you think the wealthy and affluent are not "fat"? Economical stress in survival affects how fat is stored in the human body.

@RhondaH The people who are fat are the ones who see/use food as a drug, the ones who eat for a "high" not because they are experiencing hunger. I'm not blaming them, I understand that pleasure food can be just as addicting as heroin and if your life sucks you're gonna wanna stay high lol Anyhow read the article about the school teacher who went on the "Twinkie diet" to prove that calorie count is really all that matters to maintain better over all health.

@BusinessEdgeRadio bullshit. that diet works only on the knowledge that glucose is the body's main requirement for cellular function and well the glucose content of a twinkie is about 50% of the total sugar however, the endochrine and nervous systems rely heavily on Calcium, general cell health needs many minerals and vitamins, particularly folate, the digestive tract needs plenty of fibre.

@BusinessEdgeRadio The reason you can be broke and overweight in America is because all of the cheap food, and a lot of the food in general, is transfat-laden shit from deepfriers. That doesn't make your country great.
In Denmark you can be broke, have housing, healthcare, an education, and eat healthy food at the same time, because our governmental structure is quite frankly much better than USA's. You're just too ignorant and proud to admit it.

Gigantic economic crisis, homophobic preachers who turn out to be gay, widespread religion and ignorance, spending cuts on education while constant increases in pointless military funding, riots on wall-street, etc etc etc.

Is that supposed to be a comment about Denmark?! Talk about being ignorant about the world outside the US. Since when did the US become the only country with freedom of speech and religious freedom? It´s the US that can´t keep religion out of politics and where politicians have to claim to be Christians to get elected. Not Denmark.
