It's unbelievable this scene has cut... the most important, and a beautiful one. I have to add that as I'm Italian, I just viewed the Italian DVD version (enclosing this scene), and the transation is terrible... very very poor, not at all close to the original. I enjoyed very much the English version here, thak you!
It was like a scene from a 70's disaster movie. I would have burst out laughing if it had been left in the orignal. Truly awful stuff. I was half expecting to see Charlton Heston arrive and start hugging people.

As it stands, it was clear that Cameron had already jumped the shark with this film. By Titanic the shark was already long since jumped. The less said about Dances With Wolves With Blue Aliens the better.

I may be in the minority here but I honestly believe that the aliens came close to ruining this film. The cast and the production were fantastic but I think it would have gone down just as good as a straight underwater adventure/disaster movie, complete with the psychotic SEAL.
@julianzolo James Cameron wasn't satisfied with the original version of the scene, so he decided to leave it out. When he got the go-ahead for the SE, ILM was able to finish the scene with CGI.

The other was Fox was pressuring Cameron to deliver the movie at no more than two and a quarter hours. But once the SE outperformed the theatrical version, they never hassled him about running times ever again. He more or less has final cut on anything he does--including "Avatar."
