You ever see that film 'Big Trouble in Little China'? There's a scene where one of the three storms keeps inflating until he explodes. Kinda reminds me of Diz..
Lets HEAR it 4-the boyz WHOOA. Itzhak was the only one shakin his head . WOEo , AndThe Wizard,of oz at Heart ,who's behind that curtain. Scary place to play. Hope they all ate a well and partied and got the Hell out of there safely..Getz always has that rip in His eyes .
it's the greatest of jazz horns playing an "inappropriately" titled song to a bunch of WASPs who have their heads so far up their own asses that they can't be bothered to "get it." This is exactly what black comedians make fun of when they mention "white people." Even Getz is saying to himself "what the hell are we doing here playing for these squares" at 2:31!
Lenny Bruce, when finding himself in front of an audience like this, would describe it as "Playing to Mt. Rushmore.....There's Washington, Lincoln, and Jefferson, staring at you like you just buggered the Christmas Goose...."
Excuse my ignorance here, but why does Dizzy always play with the trumpet bell turned up like that? I've maybe only seen one or two other players with that. What's the difference/advantage?
yup, thats what happened. at frist dizzy was pissed but then he played and he realized that he could actually hear himself better thia way and it didnt sacrifice the sound or pitch of the trumpet, so he began having all his trumpets custom made to that unusual shape....
really? cause I read that an angry audience member bent the bell up so he couldn't play any more. can't really see the bell curving up from sitting on it...
That's not exactly true read Dizzy's book "To be or not to bop" One of Dizzy musician friends, a really fat guy, sat on is trumpet at a jam session, by accident. How do these false stories get started He was pissed about it but then he checked the sound out he liked it
"Groovin' High" is just the thing that you want to hear, Mr. President, before you head into a meeting with the "Joint Chiefs of Staff." Was this performance given during the Reagan Administration? Delicious!
Great palying all round--exceptionally good, and Chick's comping adds his inimitable magic. Check out the related interview between Getz and Perlman in which Getz sings Corea's praises as the finest player to come out of his band. Praise indeed!
Here's the story: Someone fell on the trumpet during a break back in the Bop Days. He came back from break & was furious!! He played it & liked the sound!!
I love Stan (The Sound). Years later, he admitted while doing a record with Kenny Barron that he hadn't played sober in over a decade... so he was probably just buzzing a little bit there.
That was definitely Itzhak! He seems to be right into the peformance, if you watch him during the audience shots. What on Earth a Bush could get out of a performance like this, God only knows.
Well I see Nancy, & the Bushes there in the front row, I guess Ronny Reagan was to busy murdering nuns and making arms deals with Saddam Hussein to make it to the Gillespie show in his living room. Cool to see Corea and Getz reunited
@jaikwillis Музыка толстых, как сказала одна бывшая советская сволочь, а мне нравится. Тем более, что сидит Ненси Рейган в первом ряду, а я ее уважуха.
@jcelestin1930 sorry you can't handle the facts. reagan was a butcher & the arms dealer to terrorists & dictators, that bumbling alzheimers president brought on the failed trickle down economics that has crippled the US, the failed drug war, nuclear proliferation, caused the anti-american sentiments across latin america that breed support for reactionaries like Chavez. he allowed AIDS to spread saying it was a gay problem, And apparently he had no taste in music either, as he skipped this show

Years of playing had weakened the muscle structure in Dizzy's face, causing it to flex so dramatically. An occupational hazzard of some trumpet men.
