Credit cards being maxed out, then easy home loans (ARM of course) to pay off the cards and the cycle started all over again. Kids growing up in a society of instant gratification and the word 'no' was rarely heard. Payments on 'wanted goods' far exceeded the useful life of those goods. Using credit for day to day expenses and paying the minimum. That became the 'living the American GREED'. It's all come to a grinding halt with the dems plunging the US into recession to get their boy elected.

The past 350 years has been earning the American dream. Hard work to live and very little credit. Up until the early 1900's 99.9% of Americans lived hand to mouth and actually earned the American dream.
When credit became available for big purchases, ie. houses and land people were careful. Then credit for cars and big ticket items, then 100 credit cards per person.

No, 'earning' the American dream was never a vital part of the dream itself (owning your own home, owning a car, and raising a family). Sure, people would probably feel better if they felt they had 'earned' their success, but that wouldn't have stopped them. This desire to feel like you earned what you have is still here today.

I owe $60,000 on a $250,000 house.
Both my vehicles are paid for.
I am current on my taxes.
My 401(k) has been in cash for the past 2 years.
My part time business has made me more than the past 3 years.
I have paid for my 2 week vacation to Mexico next year in advance.

As for the media, and the tabloids..you always have a choice. Don't watch television, don't go to chain restaurants and buy from the tyrants, go outside, look around, realize for yourself what's going on because you've always had the choice

OMG! An attractive person - a beautiful woman, no less - has an opinion. Can't think of a better reason for lynching her. (me so funny; make me celebrity 2 pls) The only invalid opinion is one without reason. What did Einstein, Shakespeare or Stern do except THINK & then TELL PEOPLE ABOUT IT? youtube is neither scientific journal nor publisher of playwrites nor FCC licensed broadcaster, but IS another venue for opinion to be expressed, & as such is no less valid a medium than any print journal.

All this other junk does not create more happiness, it just adds new complications, difficulties, and different ideals of 'success'. More drama and trauma.
The only thing truly worth striving for is that which is internal; happiness is within not outside of.

'Success' is just a word relative to wants and desires. It is all about personal happiness. Happiness is found in one place, and one place only: One's mind.
If one is happy finishing their daily farm work and getting enough food on the table for their famly, all is well. That was the mark of success for so much of our human history: Being self-sustained.
