Wow, the classic b/w guitar. Eddie seem little restrained even at this young age compared to early 80's when he was jumping around more. In late summer of 1978 my friend Neil let me listened to the album he just bought Van Halen on his record player. When I heard Eruption I was like 'what the f*ck is this? Is this a guitar'.. it's not possible. Thought they sped it up or something. In 1978/1979 was when the first Alien movie came out too! Ed's playing style reminded me of that movie.
That's good lead, the guy decided to play it in minor , because after 6 hours of only the same song I found that apollo 440's guitar lead sounds most energizing and best of all ( Just my opinion)
I think Simmons had allot of influence on small parts like the tuning - some of the old Kiss stuff is like that too.....just wondering....anyone know for sure?
@jaysirrock Yep, I'm self serving and fucked because the free program I used to convert the video so that all of YouTube could view the video for free put its own url in the video. My bad.
I was in the Army, stationed in Germany in 1980, when Van Halen blew thru. We showed up VERY early, and it so happened they were showing up at the same time for sound check, totally hammered of course. They walked right by us and I said, "What's up fellas! I'm from West Covina (CA)!" They stopped in their tracks and Ed said to Dave, "Look! We got a homie here!" Dave says, "Bill (or Bob?, a road manager)! Take care of these guys!" So my buds and I watched the show from the wings!! I was 19!
I think this IS the Concert from Anaheim Stadium ! That was the Concert where VH faked parachuting into the Stadium. They hired professional parachutists to bail out of a plane over the stadium, wearing brightly colored jumpsuits and long wigs ! They landed in the parking lot and got into a van which was waiting for them...with the REAL band waiting inside...dressed just like the REAL parachutists !
Then, The van pulled up to the stage and the REAL VH came flying out of the Van !
Was this concert in Anaheim California? I can recall them playing a concert sometime in September 1978 at Anaheim Stadium. I remember my first day in High School, in September 1978, my friend asking me, "hey, you want to go see Van Halen with me?" I answered "who's Van Halen?". I didn't go btw.
@YesYou123333 Well, i saw them in West Los Angeles in 1978. I am sure they were in Anaheim too that year. You were just a kid...I was 28..NOW I AM 60!! YIKES!

@guitaraddict211 "Significance"? This band is nearly forgotten already. The music dated party rock.. it's not far off from Sha Na Na. No much originality at all... what is really funny is when they jumped on the political band wagon when that blowhard Sammy Hager joined them. Totally laughable.
I saw them on this tour. They were the opening act of a three band bill featuring Montrose & Journey. Dave was nice and said the band had long been looking forward to playing in (my town) but nobody believed it. Anyway, from the stage in the middle of "Ain't Talkin Bout Love" he bent down to shake a girls hand and she yanked him into the audience onto a cement floor 5 feet below. He was eventually helped back up and then started singing like nothing happened. It was very impressive!
saw them 2,3 months after that in france. in a small town north of france called "cambrai" they were opening for black sabbath . my first show and one of the best ever. van halen kicked ass , and sabbath were pretty pissed off. at the time we had never seen anything like that !! dave, eddie 's guitar and that sound !!! wow
The '81 Fair Warning tour was the best because Van Halen was a finely-tuned jet engine at that point.........they already had 3 world tours by that time and they knew they were the Kings of Rock.
an early phase 90, with some paralel signalmix, dry/wet + the latest model of the tape echo, echoplex. A speaker mixed with 2 greenback and 2 jbl from a fender.
Some external multiband eq, and a lot of energy !! : )
this footage was recorded on the day i was born... can you say "SENTIMENTAL VALUE" ??? LOL Thanx for the post... this is a great fuckin' song, by the way!!! VAN HALEN ROCKS ASS! ALWAYS HAS, ALWAYS WILL. :-)
I was only 9 years old when they did this...They made a cool revolutin on Heavy Metal for sure.Eddie just set foot (hands) as one of the greatest guitar heroes, Ain`t Talkin` `Bout Love babe! This song is amazing to listen, and to play is just goes direct from your vains to your soul...one of the best if not the best guitar works ever, among with Since I`ve Been Loving You. Vah Halen Rules! HEY HEY HEY!
When Van Halen appeared, we were stunned... They played at a bar in Phoenix. Songs from Album 1 and not yet released Album 2. We sat (or rather screamed and danced) on the 2nd Row. These guys were absolutely totally amazing... David Lee Roth cartwheeled and pranced across the stage, and Eddie played chords and riffs that were astounding... the crowd murmured about Hendrix and Zappa and Frank Marino - nobody played like this guy... and his BROTHER on the drums? Too cool! Long live Van Halen!
Defenitivly rare and I'm astonished by the performance and show quality for way back in 78' WOW....I hope somebody somewhere has a quality version of this...
after van halen played half the crowd left before sabbath came on is what i was talking about.funny thing was i just looked at it as another opening band,we were spoiled in the 70's with all the touring bands, but i remember they did go balls out and played the whole first album.
Five of us from school 15/16 yrs of age went to see Sabbath (our first gig ever)Birmingham Odeon 78. Hadn't got a clue about support bands.
VH came on stage and it was WOW.
Afterwards the sabbath amps blew up so we were given tickets to go again. SUPER.
When we got there (probably about 2-3 weeks later) the support band was tanz der youth. Were we upset :-( Just goes to show what an impact VH had on us. Absolutely amazing
this tour is one of the best examples of eddie keeping his album tone live. on a bunch of other tours, especially the diver down tour (look at the largo 1982 bootleg) his tone goes really thin and flat, but his tone sounds exactly like it did on VH1 here.
Spawn, look at the Largo 'Ain't Talking Bout' Love' vid here on YT, I basically say the same thing, except I also include the Fair Warning tour along with the VH1 tour as the two greatest live representations of diplaying Eddie's fantastic album sound.
he lost a lot of tone on the diver down tour because he went to a wireless system, thats why now he doesnt use wireless anymore so that he can retain his tone, but what are you gonna do when you are playing such huge stages...
he lost his main marshall on a flight from europe and got them back 4 years later. He also used the very first floyd rose, which made his guitar sound thinner, and he switched to wireless and had to heavy EQ it just to get a decent tone. I agree with you, it souns like a single coil tone on fair warning and diver down tours.
Got my ticket to the charlotte show on April 25th.

bacalex61 2 years ago
I saw them in Philly 1978, had nose bleed seats and made our way to the 4th row by middle of the concert.......Ozzy!
ohu812no 2 years ago
The '81 Fair Warning tour was the best because Van Halen was a finely-tuned jet engine at that point.........they already had 3 world tours by that time and they knew they were the Kings of Rock.

dude how much delay is he using? i know hes using a flanger, but i cant get the delay. :P
Ewing5150 2 years ago
he's not using a flanger, it's an MXR phaser.
Coldacre 2 years ago
He is allso using an mxr flanger,
an early phase 90, with some paralel signalmix, dry/wet + the latest model of the tape echo, echoplex. A speaker mixed with 2 greenback and 2 jbl from a fender.
Some external multiband eq, and a lot of energy !! : )

I always thought the 1981 Fair Warning tour was the peak of ass-kickingness....
SpikeMichaels 3 years ago
I have seen every tour except when they warmed up sabboth and the last one. the fair warning tour was the shit. they were so hot it was unbelievable
rufus13254 2 years ago 2
Jeez, I was 11 when they played, and I actually lived in Fresno at that time, but, sadly to say, I was a KISS fan, ha ha..
DougFCKNSteele 3 years ago
KISS sucks! not really but van halen is a billion times better. good thing KISS sponsored van halen cuz that was their biggest accomplishment.

RobertoGaspar69 3 years ago
When Van Halen appeared, we were stunned... They played at a bar in Phoenix. Songs from Album 1 and not yet released Album 2. We sat (or rather screamed and danced) on the 2nd Row. These guys were absolutely totally amazing... David Lee Roth cartwheeled and pranced across the stage, and Eddie played chords and riffs that were astounding... the crowd murmured about Hendrix and Zappa and Frank Marino - nobody played like this guy... and his BROTHER on the drums? Too cool! Long live Van Halen!

interesting that the guitar is tuned to D
16665150 3 years ago 3
it's tuned to Eb, the audio is running a little slow. (it's to be expected of a video that's 30 years old)
Coldacre 3 years ago 2
i think it might be d actually cuz i tune mine to eflat and it dosnt sound like that
gunraykilla 3 years ago
its Eb, thats the tuning he always played in

golly i wish i could've witnessed this.
RedMustang19 3 years ago
after van halen played half the crowd left before sabbath came on is what i was talking about.funny thing was i just looked at it as another opening band,we were spoiled in the 70's with all the touring bands, but i remember they did go balls out and played the whole first album.
gobblygooo 3 years ago
Five of us from school 15/16 yrs of age went to see Sabbath (our first gig ever)Birmingham Odeon 78. Hadn't got a clue about support bands.
VH came on stage and it was WOW.
Afterwards the sabbath amps blew up so we were given tickets to go again. SUPER.
When we got there (probably about 2-3 weeks later) the support band was tanz der youth. Were we upset :-( Just goes to show what an impact VH had on us. Absolutely amazing

who cares about the soud guality, eddie didnt paint the guitar red yet!
planetpisshead 3 years ago
This band's live sound was definitely more raw in the 70's. Great footage.
ReginaldsTest 3 years ago
man are they DRUNK in this video!
JamesOhGoodie 3 years ago
his tone is so nice that his guitar sounds like an organ at 3:33 when he does harmonics
iownallnoobs 3 years ago
this tour is one of the best examples of eddie keeping his album tone live. on a bunch of other tours, especially the diver down tour (look at the largo 1982 bootleg) his tone goes really thin and flat, but his tone sounds exactly like it did on VH1 here.
spawnofwheezedog 3 years ago
Spawn, look at the Largo 'Ain't Talking Bout' Love' vid here on YT, I basically say the same thing, except I also include the Fair Warning tour along with the VH1 tour as the two greatest live representations of diplaying Eddie's fantastic album sound.
cvjucla3 3 years ago
ive seen it, his tones really thin and kinda weak.
spawnofwheezedog 3 years ago
Damn this song owns...
xxFortunadoxx 3 years ago
I totally agree!
Largo sounds like he's playing with single coils, as there's barely any sustain.
Because Ed has such strong hands he managed to still sound Ed-like.
But i always wondered why his tone got so thin by the Hide your sheep era.
unchained82 3 years ago
oh my god your absolutely right!
spawnofwheezedog 3 years ago
he lost a lot of tone on the diver down tour because he went to a wireless system, thats why now he doesnt use wireless anymore so that he can retain his tone, but what are you gonna do when you are playing such huge stages...
GilmourFan77 3 years ago
He still uses wireless. The only plug he uses is for the guitar to the pedal-board.
JManGuitar5150 3 years ago
he lost his main marshall on a flight from europe and got them back 4 years later. He also used the very first floyd rose, which made his guitar sound thinner, and he switched to wireless and had to heavy EQ it just to get a decent tone. I agree with you, it souns like a single coil tone on fair warning and diver down tours.

I don't know what everybody else is seeing, but this is one of the worst vids of VH taken. Sorry for the bad review, great song, and try but , not.
Snowman1466 3 years ago
Yes, poor vid, but great performance, and at that 'core' time. Would be amazing to witness this performance in that time and place. Soul.

yea it is pretty bad, but its the only footage we might ever have of them playing in 1978 unfortunatly
