Roland Collombin was an extremely talented ski racer with a powerful style. He was the world's dominate downhill racer in the 1972/73 and 1973/74 seasons, particularly the 1973/74 season in which he won all important racer consecutively. His career came to an unfortunate and sudden end when he broke his back in a training session for the race in Val d'Isere in December 1974. After Collombin's exit, Franz Klammer went on to dominate downhill racing for almost four years.
