All great points. It just goes to show that when you decide to kill other animals, you have to do some fancy footwork to try to defend your actions ethically. Personally I think any excuse, no matter how deftly phrased, is just that: an excuse. It's all unncecessary; we don't need meat at all and it's time humans accepted that fact. It would certainly help our environment and our fellow beings if we agreed to stop eating them.
Also, I have seen the video you mentioned and it is definitely NOT ethical to do that. Sheep and other farm animals are all intelligent creatures who care for their young and desire only to live in peace. It seems rather odd that at the end of this video the subtitles refer to whales as fish when in reality they are mammals just like humans. This show s that the Japanese are extremmely ignorant and that that their "Scientific Whaling" has shown any credible scientific facts. If they were smart, they would know that whales are mammals and contain high levels of mercury, which is very toxic to humans, and they feed whale meat to school kids.

Sea Shepherd's video shows a minke whale took 25 minutes to die, harpooning an animal with explosives, dragging it, then putting seven bullets into its brain nowhere near humane. Australian Oceanic Viking's footage shows while a whale dying in 30 minutes. There is no way to kill a whale as fast as any farmed land animal.

Whales are not food. Whales will extinct if we hunt them, there is no danger for farmed animals to go extinct unless we stop to eat them. Kill a cow with explosives and harpoons drag it then electrocute it several times, and let it suffer for 45 minutes choke in its blood, then see if you won't get charged with animal cruelty. Probably in Japan you don't have any laws that :
bans cruelty on animals or
slaughter of pregnant or nursing animals,
not to kill animals if they are not weaned.

Nips aren't the only ones doing research on whales. America does plenty of research. But we don't have to fucking kill MASSIVE populations of whales to do research. Our research helps whale populations, not kill them.
Research must be ethical and scientific. Nip whale hunting is not research. It is NOT SCIENTIFIC, not ethical, and does not benefit the whale community.

Killing and eating whales is a fundamental human right according to the IDWR constitution and international human rights experts such as Robert Mugabe.
It is not a loophole, rather it is a 'critical deception'. Japan's whale research programs are therefore perfectly palatable.
Further, international law requires that research by-products (e.g. sushi) be processed and sold under the Governments direction. This is a legal and profitable obligation to make the world a better place for all.

All great points. It just goes to show that when you decide to kill other animals, you have to do some fancy footwork to try to defend your actions ethically. Personally I think any excuse, no matter how deftly phrased, is just that: an excuse. It's all unncecessary; we don't need meat at all and it's time humans accepted that fact. It would certainly help our environment and our fellow beings if we agreed to stop eating them.

Also, I have seen the video you mentioned and it is definitely NOT ethical to do that. Sheep and other farm animals are all intelligent creatures who care for their young and desire only to live in peace. To keep them suffering in tiny pens only to mass-murder them the way we do is a shameful disgrace. As to which is "more ethical" or not is a debate more for philosophers than me; I just think that, at the very least, we can start by leaving the sea mammals alone. For a start, anyway.

I agree that the Japanese presentation of what they are doing does make them look ridiculous, but what they are doing is little different from what others are doing.

Timtak: I did not say I hate the Japanese... just that I don't respect them. I don't respect anyone who ignores the suffering and immorality of killing intelligent species just to be able to eat them. This includes those who eat land animals too, but ESPECIALLY the cetaceans. Anyone can give up eating whales and dolphins and still have plenty of choices. It's simple greed.
I'm sure not ALL Japanese eat them, and I respect those people who make the ethical choice not to.

How much more intelligent are whales than cattle, and is intelligence (problem solving ability?) a good objective standard of what not to eat?

Anyone can give up eating any particular source of meat.
Why is it more ethical not to eat sheep (which the Japanese rarely eat) that not to eat whale?

Timtak: good points. I personally think it's unethical to kill any sentient being to eat it. Why cetaceans especially? Not only are they rated the most intelligent species on the planet--along with the great apes--but they are simply an unsustainable food source (just calling them that sickens me). We know little about them, but assume that they are as intelligent as their close cousins, the dolphins.
It's like eating or experimenting on apes, both of which are abhorrent yet still occur today.

Well I take your point(s) too in more that one way.
1) Intelligence as the most important benchmark (sorry, could not think of a better word) of the edible/inedible. I definately empathise with this benchmark. Why don't the Japanese?
2) Sustainability. This *is* important to me. One could argue, "no, wtf, survival of the fittest," but I think that the Japanese, me, and everyone else cares about not obliterating a species.

There are many other issues.
3) The extent to which the food-animal (again, sorry) has a good life. I am inclined to prefer the killing of wild animals for meat to the killing of boxed animals for meat but this my preference is not popular.
4) The extent to which the animal provides meat, per size of brain/intelligence. If one whale dies in intelligent agony, it provides X school dinners (sorry). To provide the same number of school dinners, how many less intelligent sheep die?

I am not sure what this one is replying to. I know it is replying to a comment of mine because I received a notifaction but your comment above is displayed, now at least, unthreaded.
But, I believe that the Japanese are scientific enough to discern that the whales that they are killing are not endangered, or conversely that the stock is sustainable. That does mean weighing each and every whale.
Yes, I believe "scientific whaling" to be a dressing up.

It is a dressing up of what I beliee to be scientifically carried out commerical whaling. It is both scientific and commericial. In order not to offend Westerners (who they see as being rather like Hindu's towards cows) they think it better to stress one of the two reasons. They think they are being tactiful. I think that they should just be frank.
"We want to eat whale. We will do so while studying the whale population scientifically to ensure that it is not endangered."

I think that the Japanese are fudging the issue.
They want to fish for whale, but they want to do it in a responsible way. A responsible way entails research. They are also (as well as the meat for their whale stakes) researching. In my opinion they should make their multiple motives clear.
They long and short of it, I think, is that they think that they are whaling responsibly, at a level that can be supported by the whale population, since they are researching that population.

I am apposed to the way that the Japanese portray their whaling. They should call it whaling, done scientifically, and tell beef eaters where to go.
They are trying to be polite and sensitive. Among Japanese the strategy would be seen positively. Among Westerners it backfires.

Japan, is not doing all this for 1000 Mink's. The industrial whaling ships are supposed to make a profit and with bigger ships they can harvest 10,000 p/annum and they will, or else they are loosing money. Don't forget the endangered species that they prefer.
The science on the numbers - yes Tim Flannery believes there are bigger evils. This is not the issue. The issue is the existing ban, and the whale sanctuary.
Japan is breaking all the rules, and shifting blame.

The Japanese call their whaling "scientific." In one sense it is, but it is also equally commercial - because they want to eat whale, and because the whalers want to make a living.
By this attempt at tact, the Japanese are getting a bad name, and making people think that they are out and out liars that would whale to extinction.
The truth is that they care about the whales at least, I would say more more, than the cattle farmer cares about cattle and would not whale to extinction.

That is a reasonable assumption to make, however I feel you underestimate how wrong a fake research operation looks to Australians, et al.
Australia has the lowest instance of corporate corruption in the world. That sort of thing is almost unheard of here.
In fact, I suspect that Japan expected to be allowed to go on hunting whales under a research guise as a favour and I think Japan is upset because of that, but there is NO WAY we could ever let that kind of corrupt practice go on...

They have not acted anything like what I expected from Japan.
The fisheries department is not a pleasant bunch of guys. Ultra right wing Nationalists hijacked this debate from the start and the ministers in charge have been much more deceitful than just using the research guise.

I am not sure how "ultra right wing it is."
If people (lets say if India was the only superpower) said "Don't eat beef. You are greedy, nasty..." then even a non-ultra-right wing British person might get unpleasant about it, and use any means to circumvent what they (we) would see as a cultural imposition.
That is the way a lot of Japanese people see it, not only the "ultra right."
