He worked on many pieces with Brahms: the concertos, the Handel and Paganini Variations, and the Sonata op. 5 most imporantly. His interpretation of the 1st D minor concerto was the benchmark in the later 19th century: Brahms conducted it while d'Albert played in 1895. This performance was the first successful performance of the work, which had completely flopped at its premier in 1859. The two men shared a huge mutual esteem, as is seen from their letters.
