I'm assuming Alison must be with Benny in this version instead of the business man (a.k.a Her Father).lol.I wonder why they shortened some of the verses in the final version.
WHY did they cut that out? ): I was wondering why the OBC and movie didn't say anything about CBGB since that must've been a HUGE inspiration for Roger.
@fancypantsedhipster They mentioned CBGBs at the begining of the play. It was when Mark was introducing their apartment, before Tune Up #1. He talks about the posters on the wall, which were from old gigs that Roger had played. CBGBs is one of the places where he played. The movie cut this out.
haha this is really cool...you can really hear the lyrics well...this is such a broadway masterpiece...how do you even write something like this? it's so intricate and verbose in a brilliant way...jl mustve spent forever writing and rewriting this til it turned out the way he wanted...I write progressive metal and this cut still makes my head spin...unreal...
wow......pretty cool, but the new version is better. that whole awkward exchange between Maureen and Mark "Hello! i'm a dyke!" funny, but just a little....off. like that would never happen. i'm glad it went through revisions.
at 5:33, what are the lyrics? I thought they were "CBGB's, De Laso, tabouli, body fluids, KS lesions, spotty lungs, silence equals death", but a lot of the lyric sites say it's "CBGB's, De Lasso, tabouli, body fluids, KS lesions, funny looks, silence equals death."
have you heard the version of jonathan singing it in 1992, it's really different from what it is now, it's got some really interesting bits in it though xx give it a listen if you havn't already xx =D
Yea def, but I wish they had left in the harmony part on "emotion devotion to causing a commotion..." that part was pretty cool...if it was me though I'd have cut it for the second part of the line ("to passion to fashion.." etc.), but it was a nice little texture the first time. Wonder why they didn't leave it in?
Who played Maureen in this? I honestly don't like her. She is super dull with her voice...I mean this song is suppose to be all...ENERGY! Where is hers?
"Meet you in the bathroom" ahahaaha I love Mark! I swear.
I liked this. Not as much as the final version, but it made me laugh (for plenty of reasons...)
Maureen's character was a little different in early versions. in Anthony's book it says that Idina played Maureen very differently from the workshop Maureen.
I like that the broadway version stayed close to this one, but I definately like the OBC better. The OBC has more personality and give the feel that they actually are the characters. Everyone but Mark and Daphne seem to not really be into it.
..interesting. OBC is by far the best. Don't get me wrong, this version isn't terrible, just it's just all the singers besides Anthony are totally flat.
i really like this version! its more exciting the OBC version. in that recording they sound just a bit too timid, but this is great! i love the extra lyrics!
no. they refer to him as their slum lord which is what he is at this point in the relationship both in the broadway and NYTW version. doesn't dismiss his ex-roomie/fried relationship with them
Yeah, I wasn't really referring to this song, but in this version a lot of those allusions- "We'll see boys", the first tune-up (?) with the benny- great- fuck part are missing, so i was wonderning if that was a later development of the script. anyway, rent is amazing.
I actually think this version is better than the Broadway show!

Ahah, It's so weird hearing how much the song changed. This song is my second favorite in the entire musical! <3
It got so much better afterwards! This version doesn't have alot of energy.

It sounds like Mark is Anthony...is he??
Because it says in his book that he was part of the workshop...
Yeah, it is xD

Anthony and Daphne are the only ones whose voices I actually enjoy in this version. Although the lyrics in the original are incredibly amusing.

I find it kind of ironic how the only people you actually enjoy in here are the ones that made it into the Off-Broadway and Broadway productions.

i'll say this-this version is okay... but it still a relief that only Anthony and Daphne stayed
though i like the slightly more desperate mark still wanting Maureen back.
