  • is that a custom guitar? what brand is that?

  • his fingers move so fast its not even fair.. fuck it i quit!

  • i cant even play anything hes talked about so far....ive been playing for like 6 years but i suck because i didnt learn any theory at all. i really wish i was good, i just have issues with timing my notes right. plus my right hand sucks when it comes to fast picking

  • Natures capo Love it :)

  • Yes, cool idea. Paul Gilbert does indeed use this same shape... but no tapping required for his freakishly large hands.

  • @carvetop paul does it quite a bit higher on the neck, and he uses a shorter scale

  • This form that he's teaching reminds me of Paul Gilbert's premise of the 3 string guitar, just keeping the same fingering on three strings in an arpeggio.

  • insane chops... but wait, he uses a hairband. cheat!

  • @proggydrummer yup...I use a sock

  • That fuzzy thing on the 2rd fret is just to keep the strings from ringing right?

  • @ProggyDrummer correct. you can also use a simple hair band

  • Gorgeous, gorgeous arpeggios.

  • when i start thinking i am a pretty good guitarist,,,,,i watch guthrie......it reminds me how crappy i actually am......and gives me a lot of motivation to work harder,,,,,,

  • how the hell does professor shred #2 have more views than #1? not really relevant lol I just don't understand it

  • 5:59-6:16 guthrie is fucking you

  • I consider musicians like Guthrie and others of his scale to be geniuses. The amount of knowledge of musical theory and technical abilities that they possess is awesome.

  • 4:05 Holy shit I'm never gonna learn that...

  • Definition of Guthrie Govan- looks like a hippie, sounds like a professor, plays like a god

  • What a dude this dude is!! Gentle, awesome, regular cat.... monsterous musician.

  • First thumbs up I gave in 6 months.

  • everyone should listen to art tatum, the guy he talks about at 1:50. he was a jazz pianist, but paved the way for guitar shredders like guthrie, and was considered the best of all time,

  • Gutherie Govans sweep picking - You know your a bit too good when you perfectly execute advanced techniques you don't even like

  • Guthrie should meet Paul Gilbert

  • Very knowledgeable chap his previous video was a huge help as I don't understand what I do I a theoretical scale to understand it is a massive help. Kudos!

  • I had surgery on my freting hand in 92 and I just had surgery on my picking hand.I like this exercise because I can do it with only my freting hand untill my picking hand heals.

  • Man am I glad I found this guy

  • Who are the 2 pathetic dopes who disliked this?!

    Bring them to me NOW!

  • He doesn't even try,it's so easy for him.That's some freaky shit!What a virtuoso...

  • Even if I wasn't a guitar player, i'd enjoy this. He's great.

  • Stop flicking me off!

  • everybody can understand this - therefore its an awesome lesson

  • GUITAR WORLD. STOP PUTTING NOISE GATES ON THEIR VOICES IT SOUNDS HORRIBLE

  • 2:07 Jingle Bells... But he messed up :[

  • hey guthrie do you come in a gigpack configuration for those that let's say won't ever develop their talent but wanna be huge stars? :D I think those would sell good

  • Best guitar teacher I've ever watched.

  • How does he get so much volume when he taps on the high e @_@

  • Comment removed

  • This guy is amazing, so great at explaining something with great terms and analogies while making it look so easy, which it really isn't.

  • wheres that crazy ass arpeggio in the beginning of the video from?

    anyone know?

  • @lamelamelame8 That's from the song "waves" from his solo album erotic cakes :)

  • ridiculous!!!!! I quit

  • Excellent teacher and musician. This guy is my hero. End of story.

  • I like how suggestive he is. "It MIGHT be worth slowing that down" lolol as if to say, You better fucking practice this part right here.

  • I rlly need a Guitarlesson or 2 irl to understand how it works..

  • You need a decent guitar for shredding also. Most of the pros never seem to mention that part of it. Some guitars just aren't made for this type of playing...and cheaper guitars usually have shitty pickups which will ruin the sound of sweep picking and shredding. It will just sound like a blurry noise.

  • @ProudAtheist90 Pretty sure Guthrie himself played a SG for the longest time. Not exactly a shred guitar.

  • @ShredST I've never seen him playing an SG. If he did, he probably wasn't shredding on it as he plays other styles as well. SG's are not ideal shred guitars but they would still sound a hell of a lot better than a 100 dollar walmart guitar. Pickups and neck design are the keys to shredding.

  • @ProudAtheist90 Did tou see Allan Holdsworth with a SG in his Soft Machine videos? I was really impressed what ha could do at that time with that guitar! I'm sure Guthrie would figure his way to shred on a SG...

  • WHY HAVE I NEVER THOUGHT OF THIS CONCEPT BEOFRE! *Facepalm* Guthrie takes simple ideas and makes them amazing.

  • When you kick in all the distortion and the \m/ gain. xP

  • good teacher, mate keep it up

  • There's an evil bunny in the bottom left hand corner holding a gun pointing at Guthrie.

  • Comment removed

  • @TheGlobuleReturns The evil bunny's leg is stuck on the third fret.

  • Jeff Loomis disliked the video

  • I love this dude!! all he wants is for his fellow guitarists to improve.. so humble :)

  • I like his teaching style. I like the fact that just doesn't go "Here are the notes. Now you play it". Instead, he walks through the technique and explains the dynamics involved.

  • sheiiiiit! whats the song at the start? sounds amazing!

  • 6:49 lol

  • that is one cool lesson ...

  • Guthrie will always be a huge inspiration to my playing :)

if my videos could be a patch on this i would be happy

  • The index finger: Natures capo. Genius.

  • id love to see him cover some art tatum. If anyone could play Mr. Tatums stride version of tea for two on guitar its him

  • that "unusual arpeggio" sounds like a harp to me

  • there's no cheating in guitar playing. fast is fast.

  • I left at 4:07

  • 4:50

    It's not unusual :P Ha!

  • I don't need to be able to hear a noise gate on someone talking. Thanks though Guitar World.

  • lol 1 dislike

  • it feels good to know that i already had the mindset of a fucking pro....now for the skills

  • can somebody tell me what arpeggio 4:40 was please!

  • Guthrie is not only a fantastic guitar player, he also has the gift to be able to teach...

  • pls murder the sound editor, that gate is driving me crazy...

  • @ardotadot what do you mean !

  • omg i'm happy when i actually can pull out an arpeggio at all; sound has to fit with sweep picking, because i can't do this stuff

  • What is the song at the starting, right after the shred before the video starts????????????????

  • Pause this in 06:15

-Guthrie "You will never play like me, bitch!"

  • I want him to be my guitar teacher!

  • "You might consider it cheating." Nothing is CHEATING. That is so stupid when guitarists think that.

  • "except this time this hand is doing a bit more work, kinda stretchy, elbow down, wrist straight thumb down. if you need the neck of the guitar up here by your nose, so be it. all that matters is that it sounds good"

*drops guitar on lap, plays effortlessly*

    -_________- damn you.

  • god dammit go home sweep picking

  • My favourite caveman!!!!

  • 6:12

  • I love how you can only do this with a guitar with amazing action and a sound with amazing tone and sustain..he didn't mention that

  • I love how simply he describes/explains things.

  • @Warhear87 they make so much sense when he describes them... he is a really good teacher.

  • @Warhear87 It's because he is British..

  • @akosiCoco Let's see Lemmy from Motorhead do one. : D

  • @Warhear87 Just like Einstein would have said "If you can not explain it simply, you do not know it well enough."

  • @Warhear87 “If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough” Albert Einstein

  • @Warhear87 agreed

  • @Warhear87

Yea, him and Paul Gilbert have a way with explaining techniques without sounding monotonous.

After watching as many of those two guys' lessons as I could, I tried watching a couple of videos by other guitarists I like, but all they did was show a short lick and tell you to repeat it.

These guys talk more about mentality and note relation, rather than technique and repetition.

  • @Warhear87 however, as simple and easy he explains everything and making everything look the more practise and immense talent it requires.... when you see him you dont realise that probably for a normal human being to be able to be so fucking perfect requires 300 years of non stop practising

  • @nemogre -- Undoubtedly he has spent weeks, maybe months on the technique. I would expect nothing less. Statistically one needs to spend 10,000 hours on something to achieve a "professional" level of proficiency. I do, however, think people of his caliber reach that level slightly faster than others through the understanding he has demonstrated here. Yes, it is one thing to explain and another to execute, but if you dont know what your doing, you should expect to spend more time on it.

  • shank yo dat fer ever rammstein gutten tag Lebond Xmpg

  • whats the intro song?

  • This guys tone is a dream and his voice sounds cool to

  • @deathcoresucks1 yes i think he has a nice voice

  • Every time he stops talking it sounds like the video gets muted. soooo creepy.

  • @ironjawedangels2812 noise gate is on, all of GW videos do that.. :(

  • Comment removed

  • I can never play it correctly, especially with you looking at me. *plays it perfectly*

  • malmsteen can fuck hem easily

  • @mustaine8282 hahaha fuckin noob

  • @mustaine8282 ....Idiot... Get out.

  • @mustaine8282 Malmsteen couldn't fuck a incapacitated whore, He is sloppy and untalented, If you like Malmsteen and you're a musician you will never make it anywhere in music. You should probably kill yourself immediately to prevent anyone else from having to look at your incompetent grammar abilities and hear your idiotic opinions and uneducated arrogant dim witted comebacks.

  • @TheMichaelclark its about appreciation for what Malmsteen adds to guitar playing plus hes one of the first shredders and yea once again : He can Fuck hem easily , where is the incompetent grammar abilities bitch??

  • @mustaine8282 (*him *yeah *again. *easily, *It's *he's) Not to mention this is all one run on sentence. Your musical views are invalid turd.

  • @TheMichaelclark we will play spell the word like 5th grade students or battling on guitar where i can stick my dick in your ass

  • Checked out your videos, and man are you bad. Horrible tone and very sloppy shredding. Take a look in the mirror before you criticize musicians man.

  • @TheMichaelclark I hope to God you're not talking about Guthrie...

  • @TheRealAchilleZ No that was meant for that mustaine882 whatever his name was, i just accidentally didn't reply to him. He was talking about how malmsteen would fuck guthrie? Like it was a competition or something. Then i watched the guys uploads and he was horrible.

  • @TheMichaelclark Malmsteen isn't even in the same breath as Guthrie. Guthrie can play many styles many ways and incorporate his own style into all of them not to mention he plays some of the best Jazz Fusion out there. Malmsteen can repeat arpeggios. Big deal.

  • @TheRealAchilleZ Thank you for being sensible and understanding :)

  • @TheMichaelclark Of course.

  • @TheRealAchilleZ Where is Guthrie's "Rising Force"?

  • @bobmazzi When he slaps his cock against the guitar drunk.

  • @mustaine8282 LOL

  • @iExisttt lol up ur ass mother fucker

  • @mustaine8282 it doesn't matter, Malmsteen and Govan can fuck yo easily, you don't know anything.

  • @anjoesatriani what do you know byatch what about an online guitar battle

  • brilliant

  • Wow, thats an amazing technique for sweeping. a really good teacher no doubt

  • thought he was gonna play "it's not unusual" at 5:02

  • amazing techniques.

  • he's right about the piano hopping.... at least for me

  • How have I never heard of Guthrie Govan before!?

  • @ltayl1 admit it, your life is complete now, isnt it?

  • @mattwildchild Yep.

  • @ltayl1 The world's busy letting you know ALL about artists such as Bieber, Gaga or Katy Perry.... sad world

  • @ltayl1 i just heard about him about a week ago he's a fuckin champ!

  • 6:50

  • tiene cara de loco, pero toca awesome !

  • 2.08 he messed up Jingle Bells.....

  • Comment removed

  • good to hear him talk about hammering with the index finger. i remember chris brodericks chaos theory vids on guitarworld, and i found the tapping impossible cos i was kind of barring or sloding my index finger rather than hammering the next string

  • Whats the song after the intro shred?

  • @schevva2k The whole thing is "Waves"

  • @panamanian911 the part when 'Big jumps' comes up?

  • @schevva2k Yeah. It's the backing track of the song. Listen to the album version

  • @panamanian911 allright, thanks alot! :)

  • It reminds me of the opening clarinet piece from Rhapsody in Blue. You're a good teacher. I've picked up quite bit conceptually from you.

  • It is like jumping octaves in an arpeggio on a piano because the way that always looks on the guitar is through string skipping, which I can't seem to do.

  • Then you kick in the distortion... Master. :3

  • "It gets more fun when you start to complicate things". Yeah... Hmmm... Let me try this bit again first *plonk bling poc plink* Close enough.

  • 2:11

wtf, this guy is just melody in human form xD

  • WHATEVER GUTHRIE, YOU BEAT ME

  • this is crazy hard!!!!

  • i want to be the asshole who dislikes this even tho i love it :P

  • over 40,000 views and not 1 dislike lol Guthrie is God

  • "a little bit of an unusual arpeggio you don't here every day"

..i watch this video every day o.O

  • Best instructional video on youtube? Very possibly. :)

  • He makes it look sooo easy..

  • 6:00 is he showing us the evil finger???

  • 0 people are unmusical retards!

  • @goodtimeboysoz sadly that aint true

  • He is also a good teacher!

  • What string gauge does he use?

  • @321asker123 0.10 - 0.46

  • @321asker123 he uses 10s

  • omg he is awesome! ive been trying to figure out somthing like this for months... never thought it could be so simple...cool!

  • he is as good of a teacher as he is a player !

  • he looks like a deer in headlights, but he plays like a fking bawz and hes a genious

  • someone should screen cap that shit at 6:13 and put a caption saying "fuck the police"

  • @dmohr7 I nominate you.

  • @dmohr7 img100.imageshack . us/img100/4844/ftpl.png
