If I had people build a successful business for me, and my children and following generations benefitted from the free labor, were the future generations guilty? To the extent they lived easier lives, not because of their own efforts but because of abuse of others, they do have a debt. I think all agree that many benefited unfairly from slavery, and continue to do so. But how to sort it all out?

Thanks to the hard work of my Grandfathers (one full blood Creek, one Euromutt) both my parents were able to finish high school (the first in our family)

I feel that the US Government should pay reparations to the Confederate States for destroying state economic systems, releasing our property and the destruction of our lands and real property during the invasion of the northern states into the southern states by Sherman and others. The only reason why I'm am out of work is because I was targeted by a supervisor who dosn't like Union members. So you espouse people who have never been enslaved should be paid by people who have never owned slaves?
I have never hurt a black person nor owned a slave. My ancestors (except the Indian part of me) came in the late 1800's and never owned a slave.

The south had free labor and the north didn't, it was a strategic economic move on the part of the north. Lincoln emancipated the slaves in the south, not the north. Emancipate doesn't mean free.

It requires that we seek out overt and covert inappropriate discrimination & work against it. It is going to take a long time, and will never be perfect.
I oppose creating new divisions on the basis of "race," sex, creed, etc on principle.
"White" only scholarships are wrong, so are "Black" only.

To ccr5cxcr4: it's about groups of people unfairly benefitting by unfair treatment of other groups. If I had people build a successful business for me, and my children and following generations benefitted from the free labor, were the future generations guilty? To the extent they lived easier lives, not because of their own efforts but because of abuse of others, they do have a debt. I think all agree that many benefited unfairly from slavery, and continue to do so. But how to sort it all out?

As recently as the 1930's they were still living in the woods of Monroe County Georgia in a clap-board house with a dirt floor, no electricity, no running water, & an outhouse.
Thanks to the hard work of my Grandfathers (one full blood Creek, one Euromutt) both my parents were able to finish high school (the first in our family)

MY ancestors never owned a slave. Never "benefited" from slavery. Didn't own any companies that discriminated against black people. None of it.
So what reparations are seeking is the punishment of people who are guilty of no crime. That is evil. Period.
Not to mention the affirmative action policies of colleges discriminate on the basis of race.

I feel that the US Government should pay reparations to the Confederate States for destroying state economic systems, releasing our property and the destruction of our lands and real property during the invasion of the northern states into the southern states by Sherman and others. It is an injustice for one sovereign to take from another sovereign. There will be no reparations unless we all get reparations.

Slave reparations is the dumbest idea. Many blacks came here after slavery so are whites supposed to pay them? Plus, a huge number of people immigrated here from Europe during the 1920s after slavery. Another thing, just about all civilizations owned slavery at one point in time or another so should Rome, Greece, Egypt, Iran, Aztec Indians, Turkey, etc etc, repay their former enslaved peoples? Of course not. Past is past. Move on. Reparations are just another excuse to get free stuff.

Each and every bank or institution that is now folding being sold or going bankrupt had its hand in or was formed during the African Slave Trade.
