You can measure the TDS on your tap water is probably over 200ppm most botled water claim less than 20ppm that is almost distilled water if true, definitely better than tap water.

I personally prefer to distil my own water. I clean the distiller every 60 liters or about 15 gallons and can see what is there. I don't drink tap water never did. I was lucky in the past to have a good source of underground water but in the past 4 years only drink distilled water and occasionally mineral water.

Want clean water, use the water from the tap and run it through a Berkey Water Filter. We use one in the kitchen. Water is better than bottled, and it pays for itself. Get the big stainless one. Aquafina (if their filtration/purification system is properly maintained) is probably more pure than bottled water obtained from supposedly uncontaminated springs. Some contaminants such as lead, arsenic, and fluoride can leach into water from naturally occurring deposits.

So, unless the spring water is ran through a multi-stage filtration system, like Aquafina employs, then it may have high levels of some contaminants. And no, I don't work for Aquafina, I'm just a water filtration nerd.

For water to be "purified", it must be ran through a Reverse Osmosis membrane (super fine filter) that removes solid contaminants down to the sub micron level, or it must be steam distilled, which is best.

"Tap water" is only ran through sand bed filters to remove large particles, and chlorinated to kill bacteria. It's not "purified".

Some chemicals that have been found in some tap water could give you cancer twenty years down the road. Filtering your water for a few cents per gallon is a wise precaution, don't you think?? Besides, it makes the water taste better.

@tgz1000, the best way to go is with a triple stage kitchen water filter that contains carbon (for removing chemicals), KDF and/or Ion Exchange media (to remove metals) and Activated Alumina (to remove flouride). You can make pure filtered water for about 2 cents per gallon.

Crystal Quest is one company that makes such water filters. They make countertop and under-counter mounted models.

Find out the company name and the model number of the item and research the heck out of it to find out how it does this. Oh, and if it's a r.o system, then skip it. R.O is Reverse Osmosis and it's a hit or miss with those systems and they tend to waste a lot of water. As for the toothpaste, good to hear you're using a fluoride free toothpaste. Is it also SLS free?

Tap water corrodes your teeth, yes it has less chemicals than purified but it has flouride, which can also lead to sickness and bone damage if exposed to high quantities. I've been working in a health food store as well as do my own research into water, and what I've found is pretty scary! Not only is chlorine in our tap water carcinogenic and leads to all kinds of nasty ailments, we absorb more of it in the bath and shower than we would drinking it!
