Diesel actually has more energy per unit volume than gasoline, but it has a higher flash point, so just throwing a match or something like that on it wouldn't ignite it. He would then have to "wick" it by holding something already burning on the diesel fuel for a long time for it to catch fire, probably more dangerous. What he should have used is something with a low flash point but slow flame speed, such as (drum roll) charcoal lighter fluid.

Such small explosive power will most likely be filled with shrapnel agents for maximum damage.
