Heh heh, the height of disaffected youth eh? The Daily Mail was probably furious. They would have used one of those benches to smash in the front window of Currys if it was nowadays.
I can't quite work out why you think I'm being nasty and stuck up about kids. I wasn't having a go at kids. In fact, I wasn't having a go at anybody really.
What I'm saying is that there are many more rules on what a TV channel can and cannot show in kids' programmes now, than back when this was on TV 30 years ago. Scenes of irresponsible behaviour would have to be shown to have bad consequences now. But back then they didn't have to.
A day gone by when innocent fun was fun. Racism only existed in the media. For those not around at that time, racism was exagerated and encouraged by the news papers, it did exist but in a small minority similer to today.
Back then you never had to pretend to be some one else to excepted you were who you were.
They'd never allow this to air in a kids show nowdays! One of them would have to drown and die to justify the scene! Then hours upon hours of moralistic musing about the importance of behaving sensibly.
These kids could show adults in movies a thing or two about acting techniques, even if their acting isn't brilliant - the kid who plays Tucker messes a line up slightly, but instead of going "Ohhh!" with a great big smile then a "sorry", he just carries on
I remember watching this at home when it was first aired and my mother saying "hes not right in the head that lad, theres something wierd about him" that was a reference about justin the kid that looked and acted like he was some sort of transgender type kid
The pool had a large set of steel sliding doors in front of it that were wide open as renovation works took place.
One of the guys doing the renovation works had left his car sitting in front of the open doors, so about 7 of us pushed the car into the pool and legged it.
Would never have happened if he'd simply locked his doors before going into the building!
I like the way they do their own stunts...no body double for Tucker when they chuck that bench in the pool at him..and then one of them dives over the bench...no way they'd do that now...mind you look at the likes of Frank Spencer on his own rollerskates....
@Perranporth Yes, you're quite right, Perranporth. As a result, when the first season of Grange Hill was repeated later in 1978, this episode was withdrawn and wasn't seen again until the mid 1990s, when BBC2 started showing on CBBC on Sunday mornings repeats of Grange Hill from the start.
Is that black actor same one who gets striped in that football fighting film from the 80's with Gary Oldman The Firm?

Throwing benches into a swimming pool. This, in 1978, was the definition of total anarchy.
