One solution is the lining of an older metal stove with splits or full firebricks. It can be done as attested to on Woodheat.org . This ceramic surface contains the heat to the volitile gasses and raises the temps, there by burning 90% what creates creosote, hence, it acts as an 'afterburner' (somewhat..) in a fighter jet.
agreed ...about metal stoves....but, masonry heaters....virtually NO smoke except for the first 15 minutes of start up...., do your 'boilers' emit smoke more than 20 min/hr...??
@novokarpati Check out the Central Boiler E Classic. Almost no smoke.
I like the smell of wood smoke, but I know many don't like it. My indoor stove smokes most of the time. If it isn't smoking, it is sending most of the heat out the chimney, or has burned down too much to put out much heat.
I don't own a boiler. I worked with them in the 90s. I have friends and family who own them, and a company I worked at used two huge "Pallet Burners" from Central Boiler to heat the place.
I like the smell of my own farts, but I don't force my neighbors to smell them. No one wants to smell your wood boiler either. It's just a little WEIRD how much you guys are in love with a mechanical heating device. I'd be amazed if you had the capacity to care for your neighbors half as much as you do for a piece of crap smoking metal box. It's a stupid machine!! You guys have a lot of anger!
@novokarpati By Masonry Heater you mean fireplace, right? Or is there a better type? I love the look of a fireplace, but there is no way to cut the air to it, and you lose so much heat out the chimney. Do you use wood for heat?
IF there is ANY creosoting/condensation of the volatiles, then where and how can you get anywhere near even 85% efficient..?? HOW is that possible..??
the water jacket is the problem..you need to burn at temps above 800F, and the firebrick accomplishes that, that is why we in the neighborhoods that have to put up with these 'smokers' are now saying enough. GET your ACT together. EPA stoves/masonry heaters/pellet stoves are much more conducive to clean air. PERIOD.
@GoReps Why do you post your snide remarks on others videos, yet you disable commenting on your videos?? If you don't like your neighbors boiler- MOVE! Stop bitching about it because if anybody gave 2 shits about what you thought, your problem would be taken care of, but it's not! So do us all a big favor and wrap your Dick Sucking Lips around your neighbors wood stove and inhale!!
@EdAsthma Good one! You sound like you're at about the same level as my 8 year old nephew because that "quip" is something that he might say. But yes, after countless times of getting blown by your mom i have analyzed her technique and can safely say that thanks to her I do know more about fellatio than ever before. Tell her to save me a plate and that I'll be over for supper later! HA HA
These things burn about as IN-efficiently as any wood 'smoke'....people who use these, and the company who sells them are irresponsible, period. The firebox should be lined on ALL sides, and top with fire brick and allowed to BURN the wood, not 'smoke/cook' it. IF you would get a spark or open flame near the flammable/toxic dense smoke produced...it would flash.
Stoves from Central Boiler are EPA rated at 92.5% efficiency. That's is better than most INDOOR wood stove's EPA rating.

Fire brick is not needed on any boiler stove. There is a water jacket instead. The water is plumbed to radiators in the house. Fire brick would reduce efficiency because it would reduce the amount of heat going to the water that heats your home.
The central Boiler is the best thing I've ever done for my home. My propane usage is down to a half tank for the year. During winter, it heats the house and runs the hot water heater. I use propane now primarily for cooking and the emergency generator. After three years of the warmest house, my central boiler has paid itself back in propane savings. Now, it's free heat.
wow. Unbelivable! We practice that kind of heating for abaut 70 years. Well actually we have indor furnace because is more energy efficient than having it outside on cold.
It isn't really that expensive GOREPS because the furnace comes with a 25 years warranty and is the last system you will ever have to buy. Like anything you should use it properly and not burn plastic and whatnot. But burning wood is not polluting as it is a natural part of the carbon cycle. I think for someone with access to wood it is a great option, and these furnaces burn about half the wood that a standard indoor woodstove would burn and they heat more space plus free hot water
That's expensive as s**t! Why does the one I live next to look like a friggin' forest fire?? I am told it is because my neighbor isn't operating it properly, using wet wood or is burning illegal plastics or tires. To anyone thinking of buying an OWB - your neighbors will hate you. Buy a solar boiler, they cost 1/2 as much, the sun is free and doesn't pollute, your state probably has rebates for installing solar .

a Masonry Heater is not a fireplace, please refer to Masonry Heater Assoc of North America for views on these effecient wood heating devices.

@novokarpati Ask the EPA how Central Boiler outperforms indoor stoves. They are the ones who did the testing, not me.
Argue all you want. EPA says 92.5% efficiency. My fancy indoor stove is only 75% efficient.

I have a Central boiler and it is fantastic, burn seasoned wood and there will be very little smoke. if I had to do it over again I would.

Do you really think that a solar boiler is going to help during a dank Wisconsin winter?.....No thanks Al Gore...This looks like the champ.
sinbadthekat 2 years ago
Yes, in fact solar boilers are running all over the upper midwest. Do a little research.
