Is this the electric version mbira? This is so lovely! Thanks so much for sharing your wonderful talent. I just bought a simple 11 note and also an 8 note. I'm in love.
im really interested in this instrument and ive been looking for an instrument to add new dimension to my compositions but even the cheapest mbira on the array mbira site is wayyy out of my price range is there any way i can make on myself? are there plans i can purchase?
I would like to learn how to play this wonderful instrument..but i don't know where to start. this site even has so many different ones I don't know which one is right for me (thearraymbira [dot] com) :S or how to learn it, did you learn by yourself?
what would you suggest for someone who's like beyond beginner like myself? heh
@Skwiggy Yes I am self taught. It's really about just sitting down and working on it. Depends how much you want to work I guess. I think just talking about the Array with other players may help you in you decision as to which one to purchase. Me, I'd get the 4 octave if you are really REALLY going to get into it.
@gray1753 I've thought about the 5 octave and just feel that the 5th tine would be in my way...I know, weird huh. I probably shouldn't dis the 5 octave until I get my own hands on one! lol 4 just seems the perfect amount for me. All the upper notes and all the bass notes and the inbetweenies!
@puppetpatti So, I've played a few instruments in my short 17 years, and I've noticed that some can be very overwhelming when you first get your hands on it and tell yourself, "I'm gonna play this," and it's been my downfall evertime when I get that sensation of, "I have no idea what I'm doing." Is this instrument considerably intimidating the first time you go to play it?
@Abr0Sia It can be I guess. Especially if you're used to the norm. Me, personally, I love different. And I just dove right in. I was frustrated in the beginning because I could just sit down and play. Like with a flute or piano. It had to be figured out. But as the years have passed it's definately more norm to me now! The first time I played it, I stayed up from 9 pm to around 2:30 in the morning! I had, HAD to figure out something on it! :-)
Indeed! I'm so excited, and I just can't wait! In the meanwhile I'll just keep watching you amazing videos (I especially like your rendition of the Malaguena, and Mr. Bojangles! Wish I had them on my iPod). I'll stay in touch, if that's alright by you :) @puppetpatti
@puppetpatti to add to the other viewer's comment, angel eyes, sentimental journey or summertime would do.. or for a happy tune try playing the preacher.
By the way is this a non-transposing instrument or in a different key like say a trumpet (which is in b flat)
WOW! Another finely played tune! 5 stars from me. I really need to stop stalking your YouTube channel because I'm getting overly addicted to your playing.
BTW, could you try doing a jazz tune on mbira? Something minor, like "Stella By Starlight" or "You Don't Know What Love Is"? It would be very cool to see some jazzy improv/chord-melodies being done on an mbira.
Oh how the time keeps passing! I hope to someday soon. It's hard while taking care of my toddler grandaughter. No a lot of quiet time to record. But I will try soon..hopefully,,, lol
That was really good and interesting to listen to. I enjoy observing how people approach their instruments. I think you and I would get along well in real life :)
Wow, that was actually very fun to watch! I've been trying to expand my knowledge of instruments from around the world recently. I only play nylon guitar, but instruments like this are amazing to listen to!
oh no, I don't need to tune it. The builders tune it and it stays tuned for a very long time. I might need to send it back very seldom for fine tuning, but we're good for a long time. :0)
I have tons of favorite Malaguena's...I will check yours out...another one that is just blow away crazy is the group that performed at Epcot...oh what was their name. They are no longer together BUT for a group of like 10,,they were unbelievable! anyway, thanks for stopping by. Check back, I have a more completed version to upload soon.
I appreciate you stopping by and listening to my music. I'm not sure what song you are speaking of and probably shouldn't take her music and post it here. She might not like that. Not sure. But I will go listen to what it sounds like and see what you're talking about :0)
I did listen to part of a video. It's hard to hear,, but it was very pretty.
There are now 2 octave mbiras available that are a bit less. They all cost but they are so worth it if it is really something you want to do. I wouldn't change any of the all the saving I did for mine. I LOVE IT! I spend time playing every single day. If it's something you really want to play I'd just save save save and get it. Do you know the website?
I think I know the website. Also, Imogen Heap had her Mbira on her vblog performing bits of Glittering Clouds. vBlog 13 on Youtube.
I want one, but I just don't know if I'll use it a lot if I get it. I use to play the piano and haven't really done much for a few years but it's always fun learning an instrument.
This is an Array Mbira and also my condensed version of Malaguena. I'm not sure what your question is, whether you are asking about my music or the instrument?
This is just a condensed version that I did way back. I really have gotten a longer version ready. Need to get that taped and uploaded. I'd love an authentic Mbira one day. Like the one you describe.
Wow, I love the sound of a kalimba, but I've always been frustrated with the fact that the good ones (i.e. Hugh Tracey), are limited to a G major scale. I was curious...is the array mbira set up chromatically, like a keyboard? Also, how much does it cost? Thanks.
Yes, isn't this the greatest! No, it's not set up chromatically..which makes it a bit challenging to play if that's the way you want to go. It takes a little time to "see" the keyboard in it but once you do, it's well worth the time. I'll pm you about the rest....
Truly marvelous playing on a marvelous mbira! I am a recording artist on native american flute. I love to play flute on top of other instruments. I think there might be an Array Mbira in my future. Any tips about making the purchase? Do a search for saggiohealingarts to hear my music
Oh thank you so very much! I will love to go hear your music also. You will, if you purchase the Array, truly enjoy it. I'd suggest emailing the builders a few times and they will definately help you on which type to purchase. They are all beautiful!
