  • @EnKoreMakeup Hey Koren, I am just starting my mac brush collection and am keen to maintain the logos! I am just wundering how often you need to use your method on your brushes and the maintenance! Thanks 😃 ps luv yhuur videos

  • Hey there, I think you are very informative. I recently got the mac 239, 217, & 222 which are all made of goat hair. I washed them before I used them for the first time (after watching your video & your explanation on why you should wash them before you use them) and was so disappointed that I spent so much on these brushes and they are completly frayed. Will this work for goat hair brushes as well as the synthetic? thank you so much

  • Hi Koren,

i just have to say I love love love you! you inspired me to wear makeup again ( i stop wearing makeup daily after high school, and just wearing makeup on special ocasion.)

Quick question, Is it just my brushes (like the Mac 189 and 188) or is all brushes like that, cause my real hair brushes have loads of those curly and fly aways too. They look super pretty and nice once i got them home, but after washing them, even before using them i notice curling ang fly already. Help Koren!

  • i have the SAME PROBLEM! i washed it once and the curls are there now on my 189! =( what can we do to fix it? thanks!

  • Hey Koren ...

I think I speak for all of us when I say how much you are appreciated! You are so crafty and your tutorials are 100% complete. You not only give us solutions but you provide reasons. You seriously need to think about teaching cosmetology, if you aren't already doing so. *** A round of applause for our wonderful teacher and mentor Koren ***

    (many applauds; standing ovations)

  • I love how you explain why things happen the way they do instead of just telling us how to fix it. I'm the type of person that likes to know this kind of stuff and even the Mac ladies are never really too certain on those things, which I find annoying. But thanks so much!

  • i wonder where you get that product in the United Kingdom? I have been using clear EYEBROW GEL to correct this!

  • You're amazingggg!

  • i ALWAYS wondered how to fix this.. you're the best enkorrrrre:)

  • Comment removed

  • So this product will not damage your skin after you use it? It seems like using any craft product on your brushes and then using it w/out rinsing might present a problem to sensitive skin? Just wondering. I didnt see where you advised us to rinse the brush after applying the brush restorer.

  • Its non toxic, and I never had problems with it. That was my concern too at first, but after experimenting on my own sensitive skin, It didnt cause anything. So, Yay! No rinsing, you want the restorer to set, its dries like a light starch keeping the bristles in place.

  • Hi I am a little new to the whole makeup thing and I just came across your page. I love it btw and I have learned a lot from your advices. This video did help me answer a question that i had about my brushes, however i had another question: is it normal for my brushes to be shedding, especially the face brushes such as the mac 187 and the 120? I noticed that once i first used them i had traces of hair on my face. Thanks a bunch MUAH!!!

  • yes its normal for the face brushes to shed. It will eventually stop.

  • is it safe to use this on a lip brush???

  • Hi Koren!

I just wanted to say YOUR VIDEOS ARE AWESOME!

    But...

I have a question. Since you are so awesome at making up these recipes, is there an alternative to buying the brush shaper? I really have no time to go out to Michaels to get it. Thanks! Please reply.

  • what is the difference between a natural brush and a synthetic brush?

  • natural brush is made of animal hair - goat hair and badger is most common.

  • what about a larger brush, like a 187? Should I dip the whole brush into the brush shaper or should i get some product in my fingers first and apply it to the bristles on the outside?

  • for that, put some on your hand and then shape the 187. Like putting gel to style hair.

  • ok so i am new using brushes and quality makeup lol so how do i know if a brush is natural or synthetic. I have the mac 224,217,239 and 187 brushes and they all have fly aways....am i cleaning them wrong? btw....love you! your so sweet..love watching your videos! i have learned alot! hugs!!

  • i went to michaels and they dont have it...

  • where can i get the brush shaper?

  • most art supply stores have them. I get mine from Michaels Crafts, in the brushes section.

  • im sorry to bother again but like do i just thin the brush shaper in a little container and then apply in palms? i just wanted to make sure cause i saved up a long time to be able to get my mac brushes. so i dont wanna mess it up. sorry for bugging you.

  • yeah thats right. brush shaper is pretty gentle to the brushes, so it not going to harm them.

  • is that safe to use on your body? by the way enjoy watching all of your vids, great job

  • would it mess up my brush 187?

  • it shouldnt, but follow the instructions I replied to STephy171

  • can you use that with the 187?

  • thin the brush shaper with a little water, apply in your palms, then shape the 187 (instead of dipping). Much like putting gel on hair.

  • this looks awesome and i cant wait to try it- i just have a question. the next tim eyou wash your brushes after doing this, will they go back to having all the flyaways from before?

  • yes they do -- nature of some brushes

  • hey enkore! i recently bought some loew cornell maxine mop brushes and after i washed it (for the first time) i got flyaways. i used the shaper and it was fine. then i washed it again after a week or 2 and i had to use the shaper again! help :(

  • yeah, unfortunately, nature of some brushes they do have permanent fly aways. So you will have to keep using the SHAPER on those.

  • I wonder if I can use liquid starch... lol.

  • hey liz - its pretty much what it is, Im sure.

  • awesomeness ;D

  • wow this is great!

  • i luv yur hat~!

  • hey koren,

my mac 168 brush made out of goat hairs is doin' the flyaway thing...=(

can i still use the brush shaper here? or is this normal?

looking forward to your reply x x x

  • hey koren,

my mac 168 brush made from goat hairs is doin' the flyaway look.....=(

do you still recommend the brush shaper for this?

or is that just normal for goat hair?

looking forward to your reply x x x

  • hey Magno - try washing it first with warm water and shampoo. Sometimes washing natural hairs straighten the fly aways. Try that first.

  • thanks koren!

i will try that first and get back to you =)

sorry for the double message above, i thought the first one didn't go through =( x x

  • HEY ENKORE, I did the brush shaping thing but after washing the stuff out my brushes are all still hard.

    Does that mean theyre ruined?

  • hey jacquie - it should easily wash off, its just starchy mixture with conditioners, so it shouldnt leave the bristles hard.

  • would a starch and water mixture work just as well?

  • Yes, very lightly and very watery mixture, just enough to really reshape and hold the bristles when it dries.

  • My dear Koren where can i find all these fantastic things ''Michael's'' selling in a craftstore here in Athens where i live??I tried to make the sephora inspired brush holder and i made it completely different with sand instead of the flower filling.I couldnt find it anywhere:(

  • hey lita - definitely check out any stores that sells artist supply, like brushes, watercolor, oil paint, canvas. There might be something similar in Athens, but with different name.

  • thanx a lot dear..i ll give it a try:P

  • Hi Enkore just wanna ask if im doin d ryt thng or not..

Evrytm i was mah brshs en rins em i olwys combin ol mah brshs en ly em flat... Is dat ok?

  • yeah thats fine, just make sure the bristles are not pressing against the others so that way you dont get that warped sides to the bristles. Just space them out a little when you dry flat.

  • When you say to water it down a bit (before doing natural bristle brushes), do you mean for them to be just lightly damp?

Thanks! Love your tips & videos!

  • hey jkay- water down the BRUSH SHAPER a little if you use it on natural bristles so that way its not as stiff when it shapes the natural fibers.

  • Ohhhh, gotcha! Thanks so much for replying. :o)

    -Jocelyn

  • Hi Koren, Thanks for the video.

I am in the UK & I cannot find this product anywhere :( But my #209 Eyeliner brush is fraying & isn't applying fluidline well at all anymore :( I'm not sure what to do.. I wash it gently etc, so do I just need to buy a new brush?

    Thanks!

  • Hey Koren, I was wondering if we could use Vaseline (the jelly) instead? I was looking all over for the brush shaper but I had no luck.

    Thanx, love your videos!

  • hey missjestr - you dont really want to put Petrolium/Petrolatum Jelly on your brushes. The Pet will coat the bristles and it will be hard to use later as it will not pick up products. You can try mixing very little flour or rice powder with water, then just use a little of that as you reshape the bristle. It will set still and starchy, much like a BRUSH SHAPER.

  • my mac 187 and flat top buffer brush are getting quite a few flyaways how would i go about fixing that

  • Are you supposed to wash off the straightener before using it?

  • hey ilove - you really just fluff it using your fingers. And it will be soft and fluffy again, ready for use.

  • hi! isn't there any home made brush shaper?

  • Hey Koren,

I love this video! But I have a question, I get the flyaways on my 217 and 222 also, is it safe to do this with those natural bristle ones? Thanks!

  • yes it is - water it down a little for natural bristles.

  • i like your tooth so white ,any advise

  • I just naturally have them. Genertics can be good sometimes LOL.

  • can you use that in natural brushes??

  • yep! I dilute it a little with water so that it doesnt set too stiff on the naturals bristles.

  • awesome lol i been usein a straightenin iron thx koren !!!

  • you saved me! i was about to go buy new brushes thank you

  • Helpful video but is there anywhere in the UK that sells brush shapers? and was the brush shape you mentioned specifically for makeup brushes? x

  • Your local Art Supply stores should carry them. They are specifically designed for artists brushes.

  • what about bigger brushes like the 129 and 150? do i dip it also?

  • You can dip just the tips, or like I mentioned in the vid, you can use a spray bottle and spray it onto the brush so that way the bristles doesnt absorb too much mixture.

  • Do you have to wash them before you use them again?

  • Nope, you just run the tip of your finger on them to soften them again.

  • Does this work with natural fiber brushes? I have a 224 that has these little fly away hairs and they never go away after washing/shapping it.

  • yes it does - i find that watering it down a little is better for the natural bristled brushes.

  • Thank you Enkore! Loooove your videos, keep up the good work!

  • how can u keep your brush from sheding??

  • if theyre new, some will shed a little then evntually stops. If they continually shed, they its probably time to get new ones. MAC brushes are hand-binded so some stray ones will shed over time.

  • Is the brush cleaner safe to use on brushes you use near your eyes?

  • yes, the brush cleaner is safe.

  • Hi Koren! I was wondering if it was okay to do this for my 187 brush because the black hairs on mine tend to curl a bit or fly-away? Thanks!

P.S. I love love LOVE your videos!!! <3

  • hey chilichick - yes its ok - water it down a little so that its not too stiff specially for the white synthetic bristles.

  • I don't have a Micheal's were I live. Any suggestions on where I can get the brush shaper somewhere else? Thanks!!!

  • hobby lobby, craft mart, AC Moore, paint stores. You might want to google and see if theres any store in your area that has these.

  • Thank you so much for all your tips and everything! I have learned so much watching your vids.

  • you are..... AWSOME! you have the BEST tips and smart ideas!

    LOVE

  • Do you need to rinse or clean the brush after you shape it?

  • you can if you prfer - i just brush it in my fingers to soften the bristles again before use.

  • Thank you!!! Your videos are great.

  • Koren, do we have to do this with our natural brushes (like 217 or 239 for example)??

    :SSSS

  • you can use in natural bristles, just dilute a little with water so that way its not as still when it dries.

  • thank you!!!

    you're awesome ;)

  • I meant STIFF - not still :)

  • is there any other brand that carries brush shaper, cause i live in asia so it hard to find Micheal.

  • not sure what brands this comes in Asia. Just ask you local Art Stores or maybe if you know any art students, and they might direct you to a similar product.

  • Hi,

do you know where i can buy it, or order it..

because I live in the netherlands..

    Like your vids!

    x

  • I'd suggest Google it and see if there are suppliers/sellers in Netherlands. Most Artists Stores and online store carry these. Some ships international.

  • Alright, thanks for your answer!

I need to tell you how jealours I am

on your collection .. wow .. I like it so much!

I'm waiting for a 32 pcs brushes (still a guess if they are good for doing makeup and stuff because it isn't Mac ) that I've order so I hope that I can clean them with your home made cleaner !

Thank you for so much advice in the vids!

    Keep the good work comming!

  • wow... i been wondering about this forever!!!

i washed some of them yesterday & i was thinking they were done for. ha!

  • How should I shape a rounder brush like the 217? I know when I wash it and reshape it, it ends up more flat, with a pointed tip. But I don't wan't it to dry hard like that. What should I do?

  • How would I shape a rounder brush like the 217? Should I shape it flat? I can't shape it round like it is supposed to be...

  • 217 is not a rounded brush, its actually more flat. Unlike 224, 222, 223 or 225 which are round tapered brushes.

  • why have you got such perfct finger nails!? mine are weak and break easy, i got enough calcium and vits but they just crap! do you use something? im tired and i cant explain what i mean well

  • its genetics, thank goodness. BUT I can suggest the next time you use a LEMON wedge, to dig your fingernails in it and play with it. It will help your nails.

  • oooo i shall buy me a lemon and finger it!

  • Do you think that a brush cleaner from michaels for actual paintbrushes would be ok to use? and should you rinse the brushes after using the brush cleaner?

  • hey Yummycraze - the brush cleaner at michaels are geared towards paints. Id suggest looking into proper Makeup Brush cleaners. I have a video on making Homemade brush cleanser. I find no need to rinse, as the mixture is mostly water.

  • We dont have Micheals in UK! godammit!

  • aw naw!!! i think theres a chain of craft-hobby store in the UK. Gawdang, I cant remember the name of it.

  • I barely bought my 217 brush and i washed it for the first time(baby shampoo+warm water) and there are some stray hairs coming out from the sides :( is that normal?? Any tips...

  • hey eyeslikeegypt - yes its normal. New brushes will shed a few bristles within a few washes, then eventually stop.

  • Oh ok, I feel better now. Thanx sooo much for always responding to our questions, it is very much appreciated! Keep your awesome vids coming :)

  • Koren, may i ask why you need to dry your brush flat? I let mine dry standing upright in a glass... ? no no?

  • hey Kinsey - not a good idea! The water/moisture will seep down the wood handle and will cause it to rot and eventually break. So this is the reason why I suggest to dry flat.

  • That makes sense! My foundation brush (MAC) has come apart from the wood. I have glued it back together many times. Thanks!!

  • Check out EnKore's video "cleaning brushes basics"-- If you do not allow the brushes to lay flat to dry, the wood will rot, break off & crack. Also, it will cause peeling in the brush handle. So make sure to dry the brushes flat! =o)

  • but how would you restore a brush like 217? (the white fluffy brush). mine hurts so i don't use it.how do i fix it?

  • your 217 hurts? hmm supposed to be soft and fluffy. Have you washed it using shampoo and warm water? My white brushes feels soft after I do that.

  • yes i have.. this morning.. but it still hurts! like the hairs or w/e they're called (lol) are like splitting. i tried everything "in the book" (expression) and nothing seems to fix it! aaahhh!

  • hmmm I wonder why its doing that. You might want to bring it to MAC counter/store and show them. They might just replace it for you.

  • how do you do that with your foundation brush or your blush brushes cause i mean its kinda big and it has natural bristles

  • hey Krisczt - I never really ran into fly-aways with bigger brushes. And curling usually happens to synthetic bristles, very few naturals but usually eyeshadow and smaller brushes.

  • if ever it happens can you just dip it and shape it and do the same thing like you did for the synthetic brushes?

  • diluting the SHAPER with water is better for natural bristles so that it's not as stiff. And instead of dipping, place some of the shapers/mixture in your hand and work it on to the bristles. Otherwise the large brushes will absorb too much mixture.

  • okay thanks

  • Ok, thanks. your such a great help. :D

  • Yay there's hope now. I just found them on the Joanne fabrics website so I'm hoping the store will carry them! If not, I'll order off their website. The shipping isn't as bad as the independent online craft shops that carried the shaper!

  • YAY, this is such a big help :D one question --will this be good for the non-synthetic brushes?

  • hey islandgirl - Yes I have used it on natural bristles. I find that diluting a little with water is better with natural hairs.

  • How cool! I'm going to get this tomorrow! Thanks Koren!

  • Hi Koren,

I have a question that is a bit off topic.. My brush bristles tend to break off onto my face while applying foundation or powders.. I was wondering, how do I fix that? Am I too rough with them?

  • are the brushes new? they tend to shed at times. MAC brushes? If they are not new and it does it all the time, then the problem is in the BINDING of the brush when it was made, unfortunately theres nothing you can do. MAC however have a guarantee on their brushes, and can be exchanged.

  • I want to purchase mac brushes.can you please tell me the ones i need for the eyes.thanks

  • hey Janette - I have a video showcasing all the MAC Eye brushes. Just look it up on my vid list and I hope that helps ya.

  • Yes I saw it after I posted the question. Thanks it really helped.

  • WOW!! I continue to be influenced by your talent's there greatly appreciated! I learn so much from you:)

  • Hey Koren,

this may be a stupid question. But is it ok to use the brushes on your face when applying makeup after the brush shaper has dried? I have sensitive skin ... so this is my only reason 4 asking.

    thanks

  • hey makeup2inspire - yes its safe and non toxic. You just need to soften the bristles with your fingers much like what you do to brand new brushes.

  • Woohoo! I've been noticing my beloved Too Faced shader brush has been pokey on my eye lately and I just looked close at the brush and saw so many fly-aways! I have to do this asap! Thank you Koren for yet another informative video!

  • Wow, thanks for this video! All of your tips are awesome. =)))

  • I Went To Michaels And Bought The Brush Shaper It Was The Last One, And I Also Bought The Containers And Filler For The Sephora Inspired Brush Holder. I Bought The Last Container. You Are Making A Mark On DIY Koren. Keep The Videos Coming.

  • yeay! let me know how you like your new DIY brush holder!

  • Thanks for the info! I will definitely check it out, as well as some paint brushes for makeup (after watching your other video, I'm so intrigued!).

  • Thanks so much for this - you're brilliant! Becca :D
