the rock couple, Denny Sanders and Michigan Mom ruled the Cleveland airways (mainstream and alt.) in the late 70's with encyclopedic knowledge and good taste.
What ever happen to Donna Harper she was the first in the States to play an unknown band named Rush...and the rest is history. There's a reason the Rock Hall is in Cleveland. Any body remember " I gotta it down" every Friday? Glad I was part of it Class of 75.
Can we dial the clock backwards? I want to go back. Cleveland in the 70's was so great - so many young people - so much happening - 'mms - was so great - this makes me proud of my Cleveland roots - thanks for posting...got any good World Series of Rock film? Please post, please post...
Great video1 Someone ought to send it to every radio conglomerate and recording labels so they would recognize why satellite radio is booming and compact disc sales are in the dumpster. "Album Oriented" stations and DJ personalities that were able to play any cut off an album. You would listen to the station because you wanted to hear what the DJ thought was a good single or record - not necessarily what the music industry wanted played. Shame that those days seem lost forever...
Yeah, there many great FM rock stations around in those days. I am not sure when it all went bad. I think it was a slow process. Consultants throwing out cool album tracks because a station could sell more commercial time by playing other songs that might have compromised what prog rock radio was all about in the first place. WMMR was one of the great stations people talk about when they talk about the old days of FM rock radio. Anyway, good stuff indeed!
I'd have to lay the blame on Malrite Communications for the "beginning of the end of WMMS". They've tried to take WMMS into a hybrid of Top 40 and Album Rock from around 1984 to 1989. Fortunately, they've managed to right the ship by late 1989, but the damage had begun. Also, there was the "Rolling Stone" magazine controversy where WMMS was caught stuffing the ballot box.
GMAN, Words cannot express how much joy you brought into many of our lives by playing these great clips from the great run at WMMS. John Gorman's attitude permeated Cleveland like no other. It's sad, but to see Clear Channel and the other corporate community of Neocon's try to force the daily diatribe of conservation bullshit on the airwaves of America, you can't help to see how far radio has fallen from the heights of our own WMMS in the 1970's and 80's.
Growing up in Cleveland in the seventies, MMS was THE radio station in the country. So much influence, so much history. And you're right...FM is dead. I haven't listened to FM in over two years, since I got XM. It's sad...the Clearchannels and their ilk milked radio to death.
Remember when the MMS morning show hung a Russian flag out their window and burned it? Ahhh...the Cold War.
"The Music is far more important..." if radio djs, programmers, and especially executives still thought that way FM radio wouldn't be dying. There is no entertainment value left. All we have to look forward to today is a computer programming the same song in Cleveland at the same time as everywhere else. There are no requests, no personality, no variety. Instead the variety we get is in the 14 minutes of ads an hour. It's really sad how far Cleveland radio and other cities have fallen.
I listened to this everyday! This is real radio! It's one reason why I went into Radio.......shoulda stayed there........

It's really funny that Denny identified the obnoxious fans as the ones who request Freebird! Yeah, the drunk bikers were pretty obnoxious

Smoking in the studio...did you see that? I doubt you can even smoke anywhere in the building that houses WMMS these days...

Too bad Clear Channel ruined it by losing site of all originality with these "album oriented" stations.
BTW, it's funny that Denny cues up "Lord of the Thighs" by Aerosmith and calls it "Woman of the World". Ooops!
