I found it odd that South West Trains said they couldn't keep the Lymington trains running - because of lack of spares to keep them going! After all - how else have hundreds of Railway Societies kept their engines going over the years? I get the feeling "Higher Powers" were meddling in that one.
@AustinSomerset you've got to remember however that they were in use day in day out, which doesn't occur in preservation. Also, preservation societies may well take parts off scrapped trains which SWT may not have access too. Plus, preservation societies may have new parts built for them, which is what SWT wouldn't of wanted to do due to the high cost. Anyway, an additional 5 years out of them was very welcome
I never had a dream come true till the day that I found you, read into that statement what you will.................... Thanks for a great upload NSE50Lion
Dont know if you know, but Knight Rail (who own Eastleigh works) are currently restoring 2 of them so they can return to the mainline to run railtours e.t.c.
@ChampsRacing I was lucky enough to work on 'em for 25 years. I never broke down with one...Although I had to rescue three of them...One using a 455. Great old trains...Not a microchip in sight. Even on the hottest days, with all those opening windows, you could get a good breeze going through the carriages. Now on 450/444s you rely on air con which can't always keep up.

brill vid mate loce them they truely were the best i was on the last slamdoor ever to btighton but i was too young to have a camera sadly othere wise it would be on you tube
Lucky sod being on the last one. The electrostars just arn't the same, i'd much rather lean out the window to open the door rather than press a button! Still haven't been to Lyminton though!
Actually, its dam the health and saftey people who said they were 'unsafe'. As a result, it was in southerns (southeastern and SWT also) franchise agreement to replace them. If it wasn't for that, i would very much expect they would still be going strong.
the slamdoors were the best trains ever!!! they really put the character into the southern region and will always be my favourite multiple unit.its such a shame so many have been scrapped.
some units refuse to leave the mainline unit 1881 will be back on the mainline in less than 6months the others after
Knights Rail have saved cigs 1304 1881 1884 at the very last minuate b4 they were due to be scraped now they are at eastligh works being refurbished and fitted with central locking to make a return the mainline on southern so some cigs are comeing home!!!!
and the award to worst choice of music goes to...

Loved these units, grew up using them, but was too late to work them, give me a slammer over a 450 anyday. Great video.

I read that recently. Its the best news i've heard about the slammers since SWT said they were keeping two for the lymington branch
I wonder what livery Knights Rail will put them in?
