Almost every anime has filler material regardless of the authors input, as the animation team is who fleshes it out in full motion. Some anime have more filler than others. DBZ actually has a ton of filler if you go back and look at it. The little flash clip in the anime came from a movie. Thus it cant be used as proof to say Saiyans can breathe in space.
