The guitar he's playing is not a "Hendrix" model strat! The Hendrix Voodoo strat has a large headstock and the bridge pickup is reversed slanted (i.e. bass side is closer to the bridge, where as on normal strats the treble side is slanted toward the bridge.) More than likely if it's not the "Try" guitar that was given away in the contest it's just a normal strat with a lefty neck. Besides who gives a shit - the boy can play! Oh and Yes - the Hendrix strats are special!

If you have listened to guitar players and played as long as I have, then it would be very obvious that John's "style" is a mix of a lot of SRV with some Hendrix and Clapton. In fact Mayer got very defensive in an interview when this exact point was brought up. John is a very good rock abd blues guitar player... but like a very good cover band guitar player.

By the way, I've been playing nearly as long as you've been alive and can go from Beck to Benson with no problem, and I've gotten props from some of the best out there. I listened to him today and he didn't sound anything like Stevie, he never played a shard as Stevie did. He is way mellow when he plays and Stevie Beat the living shit out of his guitar, John Mayer does not. John Mayer has his own style and it is not anywhere close to what Stevie's was.

No he will not. He can sound like him all he wants, he will never have the soul that Stevie had when playing guitar. He will never be able to have the emotion Stevie displayed when playing and won't be able to tell his story through how he played. He can come close, but there will never be another Stevie Ray Vaughan.

John Mayer is the most hyped and overated guitar player out today. Yes, he's good, but nowhere near great.And don't give me any carp about how young he is: Clapton cut the Beano album when he was 21. Go compare that to Mayer's playing. Word's like "great" are so casually used today, they have no meaning. Want to hear "great"? Eric Clapton was an innovator who took his influences and forged a unique style. Mayer has no style of his own. He's a copyist. If you think he's the Clapton of "this generation", it's sad.

If you have listened to guitar players and played as long as I have, then it would be very obvious that John's "style" is a mix of a lot of SRV with some Hendrix and Clapton. In fact Mayer got very defensive in an interview when this exact point was brought up. John is a very good rock abd blues guitar player... but like a very good cover band guitar player.

It's really a sign of true intellect when you can't refute an argument to turn to personal attacks. By the way, I've been playing nearly as long as you've been alive and can go from Beck to Benson with no problem, and I've gotten props from some of the best out there. So I know a little more than the average person on here. I never said Mayer wasn't good or that he sucked, just that he's not great. If you want to hear someone in this generation who IS great, check out Joe Bonamassa.

John Mayer is a fantastic guitar player. His pop/rock music is somewhat embarrasing after hearing him play blues/soul/funk. Regardless of whether or not he was sincere, I think that making the comment that he's the only one who can make the blues popular is garbage. Derek Trucks would have him looking like a first-day student in the White Man Blues 101 - straight up blowing him off the stage. Check out Derek Trucks for sure.

the thing i think i like about him the most is that he's doing the music he WANTS to do -- whether or not he can is up to interpertation(i personally think that he's quite able of performing BOTH his old stuff [pop] and this stuff, more soul/rock inspired).
he's entirely himself -- what i mean is he know who he is and what he wants, he doesnt let others convince him otherwise. I think that's rare these days.
