I'm not the only ony one who wants to see you put some material through this sluice so can you put up another one running material without the gay music so I can hear.
very nice job :) I made one like yours but 12" wide, we have a lot of micro fine gold here in calif, whats helped me to capture it, was to lay a piece of window a/c filter foam on the last half of the box, on top of the plastic mat, the foam filter really holds the micro fine gold, now i have to make a shaker table to get the micro fine gold seperated from the black sand and dirt, I hate black sand :) a magnet and plastic bag helps with black sand, the blue bowl does not get the nano micro gold.
this is defiantly the best video on on the internet describing how to make a sluice box. i have looked through pages on youtube and on Google search on "how to make a sluice box" and every time i stumble upon this video i come to the same conclusion.
hell yea. i love his idea. havent done it myself/ but i could see how you could do this even at home; and just going out to the river and getting a bunch of prep-shifted gravel/sand ready to slush.
Thats awesome. Do people normally take all the material in the sluice home that contains the gold or do they pick it out on location. Sorry i have never looked for gold and have no idea on this topic, thanks
Mate . . . just sit back and listen to your YouTube . . . . It sucks that the music drowns out your obviuously excellent audio ( not that I can hear it !! )
I notice that a lot of people use high velocity, expensive (for me) water pumps. Any chance that a less expensive pump like your 13gpm is going to create enough water flow for a larger sluice box? How do these work with recirculating (dirty) water?
it looks really good, but i don't feel good about those rifles you in there. 2 reasons. 1. i don't think the angles are real good. it may work but at what cost in gold is it not catching? 2. you should have everything fastened down. even the smallest pump in the wrong way could shake some material loose :( . also, the water flow is a little sluggish. it would work fine for fine gold, but you'll be slowed by the feed time. anyways...hope my tips help out brother. happy digging!
Three hopefully helpful comments. 1. Paint the wood, and it will last many times longer. 2. Hang a classifier under the spill off and it will keep most of the bigger stuff from filling your tub. Just check it occassionally and toss the worthless stuff. 3. Use a small carpenter's level to set your working angle. Start with a full bubble off, and adjust until you like it. Then the same angle can easily be set anywhere, even on unlevel ground. Happy hunting.
Like the idea, just dont like the wood. It tends not to stand up to water for more than season. that and, a thin stainless steel or aluminum is lighter and you can incorporated an electro magnet underneath.
i like this idea. i was wondering. i'm new to this. I've noticed that dredges have similar things to the carpet in the center. i understand that small nuggets get stuck on the first rubber pad, then the ridges at the end but how do you get the super fine gold out of the carpet?
other then washing the carpet with water over a pan or a bucket,i no people that will burn the carpet after a season of use ,then pan the ashes ,and or put in blue bowl.
I ran my 6 ft. home-made for two days and sadly it put my Keen to shame! 12 years ago my Keen was around 160 bucks. I throw some wood together and glue everything down in under two hours and it caught twice as much gold as the Keen! Wood was really all the early miners had to work with. I found brads or tack nails from some of those boxes they used. Screws were scarce, but it's cool to find things from 160 years ago! I work the Mother Lode in different parts. Thanks for the info on the pump.
Thats Great glad it worked .. How much gold was toward the bottom half if any do you know ???? I just think its cool we can make something like this hand made and a lot less money and have it catch just as much gold or more LOL..
Also you could make your own Grizzly ,.. But i think its important to look at the bigger rocks when your classifying it down to 1/4" minus so you dont pass up a Nugget Thanks for all your Posts >>Chris
I mesh everything down to a size 12. 1/2 inch was just overkill. The first rifle and carpet in front of it caught the majority. Second rifle and carpet barely had any at all. I spent quite a bit of time experimenting with the flow of water on a dam break in the river. some gold is getting under the carpet but stays there. It sucks up flakes like a vacuum! The 1/2 wood dries out fast and so far no warping. Do you live in cal?
@MrAllinclubs that is a really great sluice box, i'm going to build one as soon as I get my bills caught up. I believe i'll make mine a foot wide and leave off the pump so I can use it in creeks or rivers. thanks for sharing that great design.
That is really awesome guy! I'm attempting something similar but my box is narrower and six ft long. Just need a good 12vlt pump to recirculate water. My matting is epoxied to the wood and so is the rubber base cove used for riffles. I have the same type of carpeting, except black. I like your idea because when the wood starts to rot you can just make another box.. I'll have to scrape everything off and make another box.. just a little more work. Where can I find a pump like that?
i got the pump at walmart 800 gph paid $24.00 in boating section bilge pump.. also epoxy matting to wood is great idea i put a couple thumb tacks on the top of mine so it wouldn't float up.. Thanks for watching
love the video. i've made my own sluice box, the only trouble i'm having is finding the ending rain gutter matereal. any tips were to look i've already looked in one hard wear store.
I got mine at ace Hardware Its called a plastic Splashblock used under the downspout on rain gutters. I had to cut the sides and top off of it. Good Luck also try Home Depot maybe..or just use the extra carpet for that area..
Couln't find the reciept with the name of rubber matting. But i found it where the clear floor covering is. Or try your Home depot they probally carry it.
Thank you great video, after watching last week I built my first sluice on august 5. I will have to buy a boat builge pump. I tried with a fish pond pump first not enough flow or gph. I will also have to take it to a state that has gold, and let's people try to find some.
Also when i sliced the groove in the pvc i angled my tablesaw blade a little and ran it threw the saw a couple of times moving the fence a little so the slit was about 3/16 or so. Good luck hope you find some gold..
1 pc end 3/4" thick 4 1/2" wide 6" long put bead of caulking on them when you put together and use 2" long wood screws ** the pvc is just a 3/4" T with 2 -3/4" end caps**.. You dont need to add the green bottom thing if you dont want. you could add more carpet down there or just the rubber mat if you wanted.. Like i said all the gold seems to hold up in the top part of the paint tray and carpet.
Also wanted to say you could make it wider, shorter or modify many ways, i just looked at a lot of different styles like Keenes and Prolines they are all different and a lot of many so i came up with this for just starting out gold hunting.. It works fine for me but im sure it could be made a lot better. i doubt if im losing any gold in it cuz i have found tiny very tiny specs and nice flakes in the upper part and nothing down below. You just want to make sure of the angle and flow just enough..
great job! The only thing you might consider, is adding is a little valve to adjust the water flow. I would like to see more, will look for the vids now. 5 star!
Thanks, yes my son and i went on a trip its on my youtube page. I didn't show the gold we found cuz it wasn't very much. But we did get really tiny pieces so i guess it catches gold. Not sure what part of the sluice the gold was in.Next time i will clean the 3 stages on it seperate so i might be able to tell if the gold was holding at the top part of it.

Appreciate You take the time to demonstrate Your sluice/highbanker. That is a nice piece of work.
Would say though, that the green piece at the end of the box should be replaced.
First thing - You want the sharp angle to turn away from the streaming water, which then creates a "backsuck", that'll hold the gold.
Secondly, the angle should be slightly more than 90 degrees to create the best force.
Apart from that detail - great work! Good luck sluicing.
