  • you're funny. I bet you're fun to be around...'It's disguustin''

  • I'm from Iowa naturally... Of course I'm from one of those hick towns where everyone and their mother is a homophobe. I thought for sure that it wouldn't pass. I was so happy! =D I'm not a homosexual, but I believe that any one should be able to marry whomever they love, so yeah... Go Iowa! And to the question "Which state will be next?" I say not California.

  • @keith4291 no- i just like to put on accents occasionally. self-amusement. :)

  • Out of all the states in the U.S Iowa is one of the first to do this. Most profound moment in history. Why go to California when you can be in Iowa :)

Iowa, One of United States Greates States

    Give Iowa thumps up :)

  • Where is WHAT written? That America was built on diversity? YES, I DO GET IT. What's love got to do with marriage? ARE YOU SERIOUS? WAKE UP! So, people get "married" JUST to have babies? WHAT WORLD ARE YOU LIVING IN DUDE? I don't get it....I think you should WAKE UP! Oh, and YES Gay couples had the same rights as Heterosexuals it SHOULD BE CALLED A MARRIAGE because that IS WHAT IT IS!

  • @ItalianBrianA ??? this is a pro-gay marriage

  • why is some ugly straight guy think that gay men wil be hiting on him in the street? dose those kind of people even notice themselvse how cold and bad looking they are?

  • @moodystar9 easy fella- that guy is gay (and cute). he was joking, playing along.

  • @Katranon

really? He made me mad. LOL

  • Iowa City! That's my favorite city of Iowa! I spied a few clips inside on of the the Java Houses, am I right?

  • @Rebechon Yep- that is true!

  • Awsome!! Now it's Australias turn.

  • I want your giant mug, I LOVE that lady at 1:31 (and pretty much everybody else interviewed, all awesome), and I am SO happy that Iowa legalized gay marriage. I think the best part is that nobody was expecting it. A lot of people going "Iowa?" "Reeeally?" "Cool."

I live in Washington, one of those schizophrenic states that allows gays to adopt, have full domestic partnerships, etc. - but won't allow gays to marry because straight married couples are supposedly best for children.

    O.o

    Crazy.

  • @VerdantNight thanks so much for your comments!!

  • i really hope tennessee is next:D

  • Planning for Iowa soon

  • It's about time!! ALL HUMAN BEINGS have the right to MARRY!! GREAT VIDEO!! GOD BLESS!! Jesus doesn't make junk!! WE ARE ALL HIS CHILDREN!!

  • @ItalianBrianA All human being already have the right to marry, The opposite sex. No en-equality here.

  • @coolair00 First let me correct you on 3 things. You forgot the "s" in human being(s). Second the opposite of "equality" is DISCRIMINATION NOT "en-equality". Now that you have established yourself as "UNEDUCATED", allow me to teach you something. America as a nation was built on diversity. When you give rights to one sect, and not the other it is called DISCRIMINATION. Gay & Lesbian people deserve the SAME RIGHTS (to MARRY WHO THEY LOVE!)

  • @ItalianBrianA Where is that written? I can tell you dont get it. So I'll move on. Whats love got to do with marriage? Unless you want to re-define what a marriage actually is. FOR TO MAKE BABIES.

I support that gay couple need the same rights as married heteros , but dont call it marriage, cuz it isnt.

  • @coolair00 so every marriage has to have babies?

well then go try and ban infertile and old people from marrying

  • @ItalianBrianA i know t his is a late response, but i just wanted to say "thank you" for your supportive comments!

  • This just made me feel so much more hopeful about the future for our darling homosexual brothers and sisters.

  • This video is great! Michael & I were married in Iowa City 4 weeks ago. Thank you Iowa - Michigan needs to take notice!

  • I've been to Iowa numerous times. I love Iowa. My second favorite state under Minnesota. Iowa's got a cool history. One of the first states to ban slavery and the first state in which a woman practiced law.

  • Brilliant video! (the first 20 seconds especially xD )

Iowa City citizens rule! The ones you interviewed, at least, haha

  • is that sam seder?

  • There has not been a shred of evidence that suggests that gay marriage has cause a decline in values in ANY state where it's legal.

  • Oh, crap! Do you KNOW how many more blenders I'm gonna have to spring for now? Does Costco sell small appliances in bulk? Seriously, Excellent job, Iowa, now go show California how it's done!

  • @SeattleRexx *that* is damn funny. thanks for commenting!

  • hahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

    i love this video.

    so much.

  • Iowa: More progressive than you think. :)

  • Please let the Iowa Supreme Court move to TN!!! I would love to have rights! Because I can't marry my parter, I am forced to identify as a dependant and receive less financial aid than I would if I was married. Very frustrating, among other things...

  • Wow Iowa; You guys sure your not Canadian? lol I am just kidding, you guys are clearly a rare breed of Accepting Americans able to pass legislation that really is a no brainer :) good on you all :)

  • Ya gotta love IOWA!

  • WoW Iowa is cooler than SanFran & NYC. Iowa is right there with Amsterdam and Barcelona. Damn Iowa is like the Harlem Renaisance in the 1920's....and Iowa men have the biggest chicken breeds in the USA. mmm Cornmeal is the new Chai Latte.

  • I got so happy when I watched this video!!!! Congratulations Iowa! Finally!!!!!!

    LGBT RIGHTS= Awesome <3~!

  • 7:38 guys hit on you all the time? Why? You mean you are attractive? Really?

  • Its not all about looks and I doubt u look as if Brad Pitt and Vivien Leigh had a child so shut up, plus he was being sarcastic duh!

  • its going to tak millions years for nebraska to go this way hahahah poor state i live in.

  • great video, Katarah, congratulations. I´m really happy for all Iowans

  • Thank you! Cheers!

  • @Kudarro08

Enjoy it while it lasts, when Branstad gets in office it's getting repealed...

  • @mikeswanon8989, you can't repeal a State Supreme Court ruling. The Iowa constitution would have to be amended, and like the President with the Federal Constitution, the Governor of Iowa has absolutely nothing to do with the process of amending the State Constitution. Branstad being in office would be completely irrelevant. It's the State Senate and House who has to initiate the amendment process and so far such a measure has failed to pass either.

  • GOOD FOR YOU!!

  • Thank you, Katarah, for doing this video! Very uplifting. We can do this even if it's one state at a time!! Equal is equal... seems pretty simple to me.

  • so welcome! it was a joy to do.

  • you're funny

  • I just came home (Phila. Pa) from visiting Iowa City and the university. It makes me so happy to see that Iowa has excelled where other states have failed and that the ruling was unanimous in the supreme court. Although Iowa city is pretty liberal, it says something that a court of liberals AND conservative judges agreed that banning gay marriage is unconstitutional. This is one of the many factors for me to go to school at the University of Iowa and live in Iowa city. Congratulations Iowans!

  • It's no accident that Iowa City is one of the most liberal cities in the country. That's a heavily blue part of the state. Still, it's interesting to consider that the first gay couple married in Iowa are 2 students up in Ames at Iowa State University. Uh huh! Go Cyclones. Ahead of the Hawkeyes again!

  • "It's nice to get out of that backwater California" LOL!!!!!!!!! Iowa city seems cool. I can't believe I never heard of it. Come on North Easterner's; TO IOWA!!!

  • "Disgusting.. Im Disgusted.."

Haha man you put on one of the best Dublin accents ive ecer heard in my life haha

  • Thanks for a fun positive video on this success story of gay marriage in the US. I swear I did not have tears running down my face while watching this. Lucky Bastards!

  • aww- thanks so much! - spread the freedom! spread the love!

  • was the guy who said ''stay straight'' serious , cuz if he is then wow :S

  • watch it again, you'll figure out if he's straight or not. ;>

  • Moving to Des Moines Iowa in July from Los angeles!! =D

  • @Joshwinters88 move to Davenport its better :P

  • If Karen Grigsby Bates of NPR had done this story, she would have shown how you heartless gay Iowans are oppressing the Mormons and Catholics. Shame! Get to da church na, and be a prayin. Oh lode!!

  • iowa city is the most liberal city in the state

  • come on...there's gotta be SOMEONE in Iowa that's not so GAY??? LOL...GO IOWA!

  • My point to get over with it religion has no place in the constitution. And marriage wasn't even a religious something, it was a TAX something!

I guess we will hear allot of piggies squeal now [christian fundies] about the "moral implications"

Moral my arse! Before you call out to morality BE moral!

  • It is my belief- that should someone disagrees with something implied, written or verbal-- it should not be met with overtures of LIES, intended to discredit. But rather a truthful banter of ones position on the subject matter. While remaining a good character.

  • It is never a good thing to be condensing and nasty indeed. Even if your opinion is strong and don't we all have strong opinions.

What matters in society is that we can life together.

I stay with the point that marriage has to deal with taxation. After all it has two parts right? A goverment piece of paper for taxation and benefits. And well you could mary in a church if you so desire.

  • You rock! This was a great point you made.

  • LOL... "outrage"

Yes, civil rights are just outrageous.

  • what a totally unbias report... Gay marriage is fine with me, but im glad you're not going to reproduce

  • likewise, I'm sure.

  • Shut it, stoner.

  • well, of course we reproduce. each and every day cute little gay babies are born. what are you talking about?

  • haha kat! i love it!

  • I just heard that gays and leisbans are a brunch of retarders and dumbasses.

  • "retarders?" really? yes, we go about retardering all the time. you poor thing. the best i can do is block you from my channel. now go play with your peepee somewhere else, mmmkay?

  • Funny, There are 613 Mosaic Commandments in the OT (Google them), that the far right Christians can pick and choose one out of the 613 OT laws to give political support to their argument against same sex marriage. Fortunately, in the New Testament, the 613 OT Commandments were narrowed down to 10, and nowhere in the 10 commandments forbids or condemns homosexuality. Just a couple of the mosaic Laws: NO haircuts, no tattoo's, no eating shellfish. Go google, .see what biblical laws arent followed

  • You can find real, bigotry outrage in Sioux City!

  • every one of newt gingrich's marriages are offended by these! three so far, and counting!!!

  • Great video! I hope some day equal rights find their way to the Hoosier state too :)

  • Setting things on fire on the Pentacrest? You weren't around for the REAL protests in 1970! Casualties: armory, EPB, a quarter of Quadrangle. That's when Iowa City was reeeaaly weird. Anyway, congratulations to my gay friends.

  • all comments of hate will be swiftly erased by the delicate touch of my gay finger. enjoy.

  • Comment removed

  • Wow, you bible bashing idiots are the real plague that will kill this earth.

God doesnt exist, and even if he did you say he loves his children, so you are being ironic.

    Also, you are spreading hate

  • And you are not spreading hate right? You people are amongst the most intolerant I know, other than al Qaeda and the Taliban, of opposing points of view . Give me a break.

  • I am responding as harshly as you would attack me nothing more. If you would say i was wrong as a human being to be an athiest or a homosexual, i would tell you what i think of you. That is what i think of you. Go spread your primitive bible elsewhere.

ironically both examples are religious groups. Im intolerant of you because you are intolerant of me

  • Well first whenever someone says "you people" they are not coming from a good place in there heart. I don't know any one group that can all be lumped into you people. Secondly when you take a stance about hating someone for what they are, how is someone to react? If I said all people with brown hair are evil and I had a forum to get followers most people with brown hair would fight back. Some may die it for a while, but eventually more and more would come out of the closet with brown hair

  • Sorry Should have been dye as in hair dye.

  • Wasn't put up for the people to vote on, it was passed by activist judges.

  • WTG Iowa! I am SO very proud of you all!

  • This video blows my mind. Thank you! I definitely had no idea. I would have thought the general reaction was negative (shows how much I know).

Thanks again! I hope Washington is next!

  • you are so very welcome! thank *you* for watching it and being supportive.

  • was the guy at 7:50 being sarcastic or serious???

  • What is wrong with this country. First the War in Iraq, then the economic crisis

, and now my home state legalize gay marriage. What is happening to the world.

  • Uhh, Companies wanted cheap oil, the monetary system is flawed and acceptance?

  • It's called change.

  • 2/3 bad things, your right

  • I love you Iowa. Why is California so lame?

  • im so happy to be a 13 year old iowan, and i am a lesbian! RAISE THE RAINBOW FLAG!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Love this video. You need more viewership (me too)

  • Land of the free, Home of the Brave!!!! Not land of the some and those who agree with my religion!!!!!

    Author:DanielGrayWorld

  • Nice to see somebody note the irony ... California could not swing this and Iowa did. (Keep in mind it was a court decision and that was the precursor to the Battle Hate in California.)

  • Way to interview the same gay activists repeatedly...

I have nothing against gays, most gay people are nicer than most others. I have plenty of gay people at my high school down and Cali, and I actually feel comfortable talking with them.

I just don't understand why you need legalized marriage. Is it a benefits thing? I don't want to make assumptions, i'll admit, I'm uninformed.

  • gay people are people too - why do straight people "need" legalized marriage? to commit yourself to somebody you love and support, and to be recognized as such a couple. there are a lot of legal benefits, a lot of social benefits, but mostly I think we want it to be close to the person we care most about.

  • if you've never known life-long discrimination, it may be difficult to empathize with the plight of those who've been refused basic civil rights their entire life. imagine if only right handed people were afforded the right to marry- because left-handed people were inherently perverted somehow. sounds crazy, right? well, gay people are in fact just people, and they desire the basic rights afforded everyone else. not special treatment- just equal treatment. out love is the same as yours.

  • They want to marry for the same reason anyone else wants to marry, and the Jim Crow laws saying straight couples can marry but gay couples cannot, the law saying "your relationship and love isn't as valid as others" insult all gay people and should outrage any decent American.

  • It is a benefits and protections thing. Without the protections of legally recognized marriages, couples can be denied the right to hospital visitations, property decisions, power of attorney in medical decisions, and over a thousand other protections that married couples get. Some of these can be done with legal documents, but it costs a lot of money to replicate what a $30 marriage certificate gives.

  • Way to go gays!!!!!!!!! You guys are so silly!!! I love you!!! I wish I was gay but I was born straight. I hope California can be gay too!!!!

  • i love your face! you make-uh-me laugh. well put together piece.

    "animal husbandry.....blahhha hahahaha"

  • Well done.

  • I love the video! Thanks for sending me a link!

  • youtube has frozen my view count at 302, so please rate and comment as this is the only way i will know if people are seeing this video!

    Thanks,

    Kat

  • I have to put my guess on Maine. Though I'm biased for Maine is, with Vermont (which already passed the legislation YAY!!!) the closest state to me, in Montreal.

  • What an anti-gay (marriage) march it was!!! Pretty colorful!

    Cheers Iowa!

  • Great video!

  • i totally thought that guy at the end was gonna address, "... husbands and wives, husbands and husbands, wives and wives."

  • that would have been awesome :-P

  • Kat you are so wonderful and witty!

  • You are the master of irony. Thanks!

  • Thanks Kat Man. You're funny. XO - Mark

  • Ha! Thanks for the video, it made me laugh.
