As far as his tone I think it's a matter of personal taste. Music is kinda like food -- some people enjoy sushi, others prefer meat and potatoes. Personally I like both, depending on my mood, so it can change in a day. His sound is that way because it's his voice, what speaks for him, and wishing it would change is kinda like wishing Louis Armstrong would stop sounding so raspy. Something vital would be lost. If it wears thin after a while, throw some Stevie Ray on the grill. Works for me.
@owlcu agreed. That's what I'm saying, just a matter of taste. And you're right I shouldn't suggest he should change his sound, that's rediculous. It's the same reason though, that I am not a huge Santana fan. It has a bit of the same quality, where the sound, to me mind you, is kind of thin. Beck certainly has a refined clean sound that is very pretty but I have to be in the mood for it. I am happy about the discussion my post created, It's fun to talk music and hear peoples opinions.
Every single time I listen to Tal's solo tears come out because for some reason it makes me so happy and inspired... She is one of the best musicians nowadays... She knows how to play with her soul and not just her fingers. Truly inspiring
Jeff Beck is soooo emotional and melodic...soulful bass solo...I think I'm gona show this bass solo to all the brothers who think they got it on the bass. THANK YOU for posting this beauty!
The beauty of the internet is..... it give people the power to say things like (Jeff Beck is a...)"lousy guitar player", and these are people who actually get a kick out of saying dumb things to people they don't know over the internet. So sad. Obviously this individual has no idea the amazing skills Jeff Beck has amassed over decades of playing.... or they would post a video of themselves doing better! I guess Einstein is an idiot too.
Tal's a great player, no doubt. But her tone always sounds a little uneven to me. Great low-end, but the high-end just sounds a little too trebly and brittle.
"One of the more gratifying aspect's of Ms Wilkenfeld's brilliance here is that she manages to achieve it with only four strings."
People who glorify 4-strings are, in my opinion, as bad as people who glorify 5, 6, etc. For the record, I play 5 and 6 strings, but started on 4, still like playing 4, and have no problem with others who play a 4. Also, Tal is way too quiet here, you can barely hear her notes clearly over just the drums, which is a real shame cause it's a beautifully melodic solo.
Iv'e been listening this like for lilion times but i'm still listening to it..don't know why? Jeff Beck, the past the present the future. Nothing like him.
Jeff B and Joe S are about the only two instrumental guitarists that can hold my interest endlessly. Jeff is so creative and milks every tone, every note out of that Fender. So awesome!!!
how do you dare to mention beck and joe in one sentence?. joe cant appear in beck's shadow. jeff is about ten times better. if you heard jeff you will never listen to joe again. develope your taste man!!
i know i'm going to receive hate for saying this. and i love jeff beck. but sometimes i wish his sound was a little more deep. thicker strings maybe? sometimes it's so clean and thin i find my self getting anoid with the sound. i know people will hate on me for saying this but it's just my feeling. youtube certainly does not do him any justice when it comes to sound.
@skinnyernie Probably the reason you would acquire some form of hate is because you see this video, and complain. Be grateful you ever even heard such a masterpiece. Realize regardless of your opinion this guy can manipulate the guitar in a way few have EVER been able to, as his fellow guitar players are willing to state.
@MrZbinxary i'm not a follower. i speak my mind. it all comes down to taste. i don't have to be grateful for anything except maybe my life. and yes, as i acknowledged i'm probably in the minority. so be it. i didn't say i hate it, i just prefer a bigger sound like SRV, Page or Hendrix.
@skinnyernie bigger sound? how do you define that, i think you mean louder! Jeff Beck doesn"t play like that he plays a rock/Jazz fusion. His sound is big for what he does, by that i mean tone & technique. SRV, Page shread & the sound can become "thin" because they miss notes, & the sound can be muffled, so although they play loud it is also "thin". Jeff Beck wants more than a loud sound, he"s been there done that. His tone however, is second to none..
@dan32113 He wasn't saying he wants him to play louder. Just wishes his guitar tone was a little fatter. Something that can be achieved with thicker gauge strings, or boosting the low end EQ on his rig.
@skinnyernie hahaha I think it's pretty hilarious that you choose one of the "deep"est guitar players to ever pick up the instrument, and choose a song so emotional, to say that it's not deep enough. I suggest you stop listening to guitar music because you can certainly never be pleased
Jeff Beck is one of the most unselfish musical artist I have ever seen. Beck is a gifted performer who does not mind sharing the stage with young up and coming artist. No ego plus a huge amount of God gifted talent. The magnanimous nature Jeff Beck exhibits is very rare these days with the gifted.
Absolutely brilliant John in my opinion theres maybe only a handful of artists who i always say can make the guitar sing ! and of course The 1 and only Jeff Beck is no acception ! I was also very impressed with the girl 2 ( Nadia ) its the first time ive seen her do u know anything about her musical history ? It was a great instrumental I loved ive saved it onto my favourites thanks 4 downloading it 4 me John - Best Wishes - your mate - Geoff .
sh!t, she was so so deep in the groove. You can see the magic is genuinely spontaneous by the look on both J.B's and Tal's faces. These almost eerie moments of impassioned inspiration where the music plays through you are rare, but are of the essence of artistic creation. Glad someone caught the moment of video.

mindblowing! jeff beck is amazing, as always and vinnie colaiuta is my favourite drummer... but that girl is just brilliant! im so impressed!! how old was she there?
@whathefuck78 - Tal Wilkenfeld is 21/22 here. She played guitar before switching to bass in her mid teens. She also has a solo career and own band. And yes, she is brilliant.
@lorenv96311 - There are many guitarists who are technically greater than Jeff, like Vai and Satriani and many more. But the great thing about Jeff - after almost 50 years in the spotlight and leading the way with innovative playing in every decade along the way - is that he is always moving on to something new, different and daring. He has great (personalized) technique, killer tone. a sensational feel, strong melodic sense and the ability to enthrall and excite even the big stars.
@ParadiseDungeon - True, but the subtlety of Jeff's playing through the years is often overlooked as people seek out the ripping, speedy stuff. Jeff is more of a groove player (YouTube his version of 'She's a Woman' w/the band Upp on a BBC broadcast, though he can rip when required. With Jeff it's all about nuance..the little things. And damn, he's clever. YouTube 'Brush with the Blues' on the Jools Holland show; now that's a very cool few minutes of daring and creative playing.
@MrCherryJuice I think Jeff is awesome, but you must be a bloody fan right? you seem know a lot about Jeff, Oh and the way Jeff played "Brush with Blues" on Jools is just ------------- for gods, he is one of my favourites, i also like the work he did with Batten, expecially "What Mama Said"
@MrCherryJuice - Yes, I'm a big fan since he debuted with the Yardbirds. I'm glad you like the Jool Holland performance. There are also some others also from that show on YouTube. You'll laugh seeing him do 'Be-Bop-a-Lula' w/Tom Jones, or 'Hi-Ho Silver Lining' w/an all-star cast doing b/u vocals. If you like the Batten era, there is a new DVD, 'Live Japan 1999'. It's great! YouTube his performance of 'What Mama Said' on Letteman and Conan.
@MrCherryJuice - If you like David Gilmour, there are two tracks from the Royal Albert Hall - 'Jerusalem' and 'Hi-Ho Silver Lining' on YouTube. The former is an ambling, instrumental that is surprisingly engaging. The latter sees Gilmour singing Jeff's first hit from '67 (a tune he hates). Gilmour sings it and they do the solo in unison. But notice the underlying riff from Jason Rebello on keys. Jeff requested he come up with something...and it later morphed into 'Hammerhead'.
i really doubt about vai and joe are technicaly better. why? because they play louder and faster.? btw joe and vai are making boring music. you cant compare jeff with those two. its like comparing warhol with rembrandt.
@lorenv96311 - Why is he so great? Good question. Possibly it's the fact that he's always moving forward as a player. In the mid-60s, he was sensational, introducing Indian raga style and pysche with the Yardbirds. With the original Jeff Beck Group he pioneered heavy rock (and was copied by Zeppelin). In the 70s he introduced rock/fusion with albums 'Blow by Blow' and 'Wired'. Everyone from Steve Vai to Jimmy Page and Kirk Hammett are fans. Just keep listening...you'll get it.
@drekotzen funny Jeff said the same thing when he heard about & then saw Hendrix..I think his comment was "Time to work at the post office" or somethg to that effect..now look where he is..top of the heap- top of his game..Clapton said of all of the 3 of them (him,Page & Jeff) Jeff has stayed the course and remained true to himself.
Friends, this is one amazing video and song if you love music as much as i do then bookmark it and live your life by such inspirations as Tal Wilkenfield, least yet the amazing Jeff Beck who plays as no one else can. For the genre its the best Ive ever known to have more than just heard but felt in my soul. Now you don't even have click like but do yourself an amazing gift and listen to this or anything by Jeff Beck and Tal, amazing stuff i tell amazing !
Tal is a badass in every sense of the word. Her solo was amazing . I am a HUGE deciple of the "Yardbird's 3" , but this is proof that Jeff is far and away the most gifted guitarist among them. Wonder how many pick manufactuer's Mr. Knopfler and Mr. Beck upset on an anual basis?
@hansmittendorf I totally agree, it get a bit to buzzy up high, strings buzzing against the frets. It would sound clean and pure on a fretless. I'm not a total fan of her tone either, too much treble, bet her playing is incredible and her stage presence, well what can you say? She's masterful and humble at the same time and that is a combination that is pure dynamite!
Vinnie and Tal are on a totally different plane here. Bass players and drummers have a world they can go to when they lock. Tal and Vinnie are there. <3
@AlternateTunerDotCom for real, my exp is: warmed up, middle of the set, L&R brain consolidates=whole brain , ie (the Zone)awareness of the space between beats, beats naturally occur effortlessly, then becomes available variations w/o leaving the foundation (feel), It's something I wish everyone could experience, should, exp & can exp. if willing to go that xtra mile= selfless discipline check out sade "red eye" lovers live tour version Theyre all in the Zone together. shifting leads prove it
Tal was pretty much expressionless until she'd realised (bit like the ex...stop it) she'd finished. That was some darting about the fretboard there. Loved every note...Jeff was ok as well..snort!
I went to see Jeff in concert last year in Birmingham, 20 years since the previous time. I smiled all the way through the concert and couldn't believe my good fortune of seeing Jeff and his band again. I know it's a matter of taste and opinion but in my view he is THE greatest living electric guitarist. He has the same effect on me as (in my opinion) the greatest living acoustic guitarist, Tommy Emmanuel. Smile, smile, smile! I f you haven't seen either of these yet, make immediate arrangements!
God bless you Jeff and Band! mucho goodo, not anything to compare, it is not about who is better, it is about doing what you love to do and doing it well. This is awsome!
there still is good music on this planet. i think this is the most beautiful tune i've found here in the last years . every time i listen to tal's solo and beck's playing after it, i feel totally overwhelmed by them. GREAT!
Thanks Rolling Stone & Mike Campbell for suggesting this lovely tune. I totally respect anything Mike has to say and can't believe he was #79. That's just wrong. And where is Buddy Miller & Jimmie Vaughn. How could they leave them out. The list is just not right. Lots of these individuals I have never heard of. So when someone great as Buddy & Jimmie get left out I notice big time. Sniffle, shiffle!
When Jeff Beck stopped using a pick he really lost something even though he is still an amazing player. Give me his 1975-1983 era playing any day over the excessive wang bar and neck tapping he is doing of late.
No, Tal would be talented regardless of her race. 99% of her talent is being young and white? It is simply not that easy to be a master musician, as her parents are and taught her well. She has years of training that shows.
It sucks for you that the thinness bothers you because as you know it's incredible!

Guitar playing doesn't get much better than this - and the bass is pretty wonderful too! Genius is an overused word but Beck is without doubt one.

One of the more gratifying aspect's of Ms Wilkenfeld's brilliance here is that she manages to achieve it with only four strings.
antoinekiwi2 1 month ago 12
@antoinekiwi2 Good point. What's even more impressive is how Vinnie C. achieves his brilliance on drums with no strings. Ha!

The only thing better than Jeff's utter happiness as Tal plays her solo is Tal's smile at the end of it. Priceless and a perfectly beautiful song.

Tal, it would have sounded better on a frettless bass
hansmittendorf 1 month ago
@hansmittendorf I totally agree, it get a bit to buzzy up high, strings buzzing against the frets. It would sound clean and pure on a fretless. I'm not a total fan of her tone either, too much treble, bet her playing is incredible and her stage presence, well what can you say? She's masterful and humble at the same time and that is a combination that is pure dynamite!

P.S. I love Vinnie's no bullshit "let's get this going, I know what's coming up" intro.

Vinnie and Tal are on a totally different plane here. Bass players and drummers have a world they can go to when they lock. Tal and Vinnie are there. <3

@MrRobmull
I'm as amazed as most people @ Tal Wilkenfield, but she gets 99% of the credit cause she is young and white. Sad but true.
gratslogic 2 months ago
@gratslogic
No, Tal would be talented regardless of her race. 99% of her talent is being young and white? It is simply not that easy to be a master musician, as her parents are and taught her well. She has years of training that shows.
calicopark 1 month ago 2
@calicopark saying that Tals playing is 99% being young and white is not serious.
Saying that 99% of this songs quality is due her amazing solo would be closer to the real world.
