Methinks this college lover of his dumped him on his ass during the old college years, which caused his mental breakdown. It ruined Cohen's life and now he wants to ruin every other happy gay guy's life, and resorts to cuddling with these "patients" to alleviate his still-rampant homosexual desires.
There's no other explanation for it. He found tolerance at home and in the gay-friendly city of Boston, and faced no discrimination or hate. It has something personal. It's not like he's licensed...
So basically this gay guy wanted a family and decided the only way to get one was to warp his own mind through years of mental abuse until he convinced himself he was no longer gay, oh and he became a therapist in the process???
The sad thing is, Cohen's dream could have still been accomplished with a man at his side instead of a woman. He would have been much happier that way, considering that he could have forgone all of the "torturous" therapy. He just didn't have that kind of foresight I guess.
There are multiple studies that prove him correct. His book was great and gives me great hope. The comments listed are very angry and I do no understand the anger. Why not be open minded?
@carollleginus open minded is not pushing people back in the closet. it's wrong. it's all just NOT TRUE. this is hate! people kill themselves because of people who claime these ignorant people ARGH
What kind of antique pseudo-psychoanalytical babble is this? i bet when the numbers are presented this mans words hold no value whatsoever.oh by the way I've been happily together with my girl for years, therefor I'm not gay, I just hate to see these closed minded egos who pretend to be intellectuals but really lack any sort of substantial reasoning skills. For the literary proficient; hasn't unresolved castration anxiety has been a dead concept since the 1930's? Geezz...
@ringotoby well, since you brought race into it , your racism is getting exploited. african american and gay are two different things. it's obvious you are trying to pick a fight. hey, it it what it is. dr. cohen is a good man, hope he continues his crusade.
@lekesha00 the people who need help are those who believe that repression in any shape or form is good work. they need help seeing that the differences they think exist between people really do not exist at all, and that all human struggle is due to the creation of too much distance between the self and the other as a heuristic reaction under imperfect understanding of the situation, leading to fear and thus repression as an attempt to curb an assumed threat. once in, hard to get out. wake up.
Cohen's hypothesis is easy to test, and it has beeen. All you have to do is determine whether the male children of single mothers and lesbian families (those who do not have a male figure to emotionally bond with) are more likely to end up gay.
Virtually every study conducted on that question has found that those children are not more likely to end up gay.
Richard Cohen is wrong, and the scientific literature proves it.
A better test would be to determine what percentage of homosexuals had bonding problems with their same-gender parent or were sexually molested by a member of the opposite sex in pre-adolescence. I'd be willing to bet that the vast majority of homosexuals would fit into one or both of these categories.
Studies have found there is no significant correlation between "bonding problems with same gender parent" or "sexual molestation from a member of the opposite sex" with homosexuality. If anything, those problems present themselves just as often with heterosexuals as with homosexuals. These were Freudian concepts which were disproved years ago, but are still unethically pushed by conversion therapists. Of course, please present studies that indicate otherwise. I would love to see them.
So the hundreds of converts, who were able, through therapy, to find male love and bonding that they never received during childhood in a NON-SEXUAL WAY, and thus rid themselves of their homosexual "craving", which was not an actual sexual craving but an emotional one, really pisses you off. You are less tolerant than the people whom you "support". You despise the fact that people are willing to leave the lifestyle which you hold so dear. You are a bigot and a phony, shame on you.
@byron84 Youre straight right? Imagine trying to change your sexual orientation...its impossible...Cohen is a gay man that chose to live a straight life by suppressing his natural homosexual feelings. But hes Gay hello...
Homosexuality develops as a mental disorder at a young age. It usually stems from one or a combo of these factors: 1) sexual abuse 2) failure to develop a healthy relationship with one's father, 3) an overbearing and/or psychologically abusive mother. I would bet that you fall into at least one of those categories. All three of them make perfect sense when considering the behavioral patterns of homosexuals, who subconsciously seek the love they didn't receive as children through sex.
If being "born gay" makes more sense to you, then I feel sorry for you.
Do you have any idea how ridiculous the "born gay" hypothesis sounds? Of course you don't, because you've been spoon-fed pro-gay proganada your entire life.
