  • Weird to see Joe Zawinul on an acoustic instrument. They are all such great players, thank you for posting this video.

  • this is really great

  • Just Swing!

  • That's how I feel music should be played. They are all so much under the rythm. And the tune itself makes me feel weak of pleasure.

  • 10 people click their fingers on the 1 and 3!

  • GSA "Project Funk Jam"/ "All Blues"

  • Man even his fingers swing!!! 1:30

  • Why can't anyone play saxophone like this anymore?!?!

  • @megaroper1001 Lots of people can! :D Obviously its not quite the same, everyone's got their own styles, but Grace Kelly is excellent. Sonny Rollins and Phil Woods are still around. Joshua Redman and James Carter are tenor bosses. Look around, there's a lot of great saxophonists! :DDD

  • this makes me want to quit

  • There's not a fag paper between this guy and SR, SG,or JC he has tone and spice, great.

After given up Trumpet, Cornet, and Flugel last year at 71 I had pressure build up behind my eyes, now I play Alto, Sop, and just bought a Tenor, i hope I get the time to get competent and not incontinent!!

  • Mr. Cannonball made me take up saxophone. I considered myself an old man to do that (20 y.o), but Ms121242 left me with no illusions :)

  • I met Nat when he was playing at the HURRICANE in Pas a Grille on the gulf. He was always friendly and helpful. I enjoyed talking and kidding with him for several years. One of the highlights of my music appreciation.

  • I love Cannonball, but Nat is so underrated.

  • God, 1:27 swings so hard.... I could listen to that forever.

  • As a 69 year old lady, I am now playing Work Song on my alto saxophone. All the years that I've heard this song, I never dreamed that I would be playing it. I am into my second year of playing the sax. Seniors, there is more to do in life than wait for the nursing home. Live and learn! ALL things are possible! With Cannonball Adderly, this is a great place to start. I'm having so much fun!

  • @Ms121242

    that is FANTASTIC!!!

  • @JTurlik Very impressed, my favourite track of all time. Want to 17 minute version played when I am finally put to rest. Found Cannonball Adderly by accident when I purchased for 2/6d (50 cents) a long playing record in Woolwort's sale in 1962

See me cycling to Work Song on my You Tube Site (Memories of Uxbridge wheelers). Still cycling at 71 years old!

  • @Ms121242 Well done, I am a 71 year old guy who bought a Cannonball Adderlly Long Playing record for 2/6d (50 cents) in 1962 and have been a fan ever since. I want the 17 minute version played when they finally put me to rest!

    Keep playing I am impressed!!

  • @Ms121242 you inspire me

  • @Ms121242 so,so beautiful...inspirational...thank you,young lady!!!:)))))

  • @Ms121242 Are you playing Cannonball's solo note for note ? Or do you play the melody and then improvising ?

  • @Ms121242 You are awesome.

  • @Ms121242 Sounds like the sorta place we should all go. Music the healer.

  • Great, makes me want to check out the DVD of the show.

  • There's so many arrangements of this it's wonderful.

  • why doesnt yusef have a solo? waaaaa!

also i love it when nat screams on his trumpet

  • @souleater1029

Never mind the scales! Lift his lines, then you WILL understand, what he's thinking!

  • Holy mazing

  • this is what you call intense jazz...

  • People forget that this was LIVe and in ONE TAKE live TV no editting amazing

  • Probably the best version of this tune...those two bro's together are fabulous.

  • @clwb0fpv the "best version" ? well, that might be because the man who wrote the tune is on cornet.

  • Nat - master of funk compositon

Cannonball - master of jazz improvisation

    The perfect combination.

  • That super bright tone, 8 hour practice. It still won't come with intrinsics. Top 7 sax players ever.

  • @BeatsNKarats who are the other six in ur view??

  • @14wessel14 I think you would have to say Bird and Trane, and currently Chris Potter and Kenny Garrett. The rest are debate-able; I guess it's really all subjective depending on your ear tho =P

  • that's definitely zawinul

  • his ears are so white!

  • Nat adderley just blow my mind every f****ing time

  • 1:30 Thats what you call swinging HARD

  • c'est quuoi ste saxo ? il a un trop bon son!! ou jveux savoir les anches qu'il utilise XD

gna gna gna chu jaloux ils jouent trop bien

  • MIKE HAILEY CANNON BALL AND NAT ADDERLEY JUST FOR YOU.

  • Sam Jones and Zawinol were on fire on this video!

  • @iamkellen The pianist is Victor Feldman,not Zawinul ;]

  • It´s Zawinul!!!!

  • Soooo Goooooood!

  • bun bun bun bunaaar WAAAH bun bun bunaaaar WAHH, WAH, WAH, WAHHHHH

    LOVE IT

  • Hadn't hear this since high school, brings back good memories :)

  • I made an O-face at 1:04-1:05

  • I made an O-face at 1:04-1:05

  • @tranurse, was Cannonball catholic? In any case, great musician....always loved his playing

  • cannonball adderley was my husband's godfather.

  • Joe Zawinul's solo is GREAT.

  • "play a pliece"

God, I can't listen to Cannonball anymore because he puts me to absolute shame.

But maybe I can watch a few more of these videos.... :P

  • @Brothergeppetto Yeah seriously. I feel like there's no point in playing anymore when I see how much better he is than me xD

gotta learn from people like these though

  • @quiksilverlad Keep aiming high, you've a gift for all mankind .

  • ambrosia to my ears!

  • actually Charlie Parker was great not saying that he wasnt but cannonball adderly has a better general sound than parker ! but we have different tastes

  • All this talk about Bird. I always liked Mr. Julian Adderly much better.

He was easier to isten to, had a better sound, and over all, I think a better player ~

  • @MarkR1957 Son, you don't know what the fuck your talking about. Cannonball is great. Bird is the fucking king. Don't ever open your mouth to disrespect one (if not the all time great) Charlie Yardbird Parker. Who in the hell you think Cannonball (and many others) got their shit from....? Bird!

  • @pmood1 Here's an oldie but a goodie - Drop dead, jackass.

And, I can open my mouth and say any fucking thing I want, and no chicken shit asswipe like you is going to do a god-damn thing about it, are you?

Since when did you become Lord and Master of who can say what on YouTube?

Everyone's opinion here is valid - just because you don't agree - too bad.

Here's a tip - don't be an asshole EVERY day of your life. Treat people how YOU want to be treated. Respect the opinions of other people ~

  • @MarkR1957 First of all young buck, it is obvious you know nothing of jazz music or tradition. So instead of getting mad and acting like a sissy, you need to humble your self and take this ass wupping with some grace and dignity.

My reaction to your ignorant ass comment was not an opinion. As a professional jazz saxophonist, whose been playing music over 30 years, you can best believe I know what the fuck I'm talking about. So let me school you young buck. Read on.

  • @MarkR1957 Continued..... First of all, Charlie Parker is considered the "father" of modern music. He not only influenced his peers, but almost every jazz musician that came after him (including Cannonball Adderly) . Now, you can like who ever the hell you want to (I could care less). But I had to dig in that ass because of the very 1st sentence of your original post. This is what YOU said. "All this talk about Bird..." As if Bird was just another saxophone player. Dude, are fuckin crazy?

  • @MarkR1957 If you had any knowledge of jazz history, you would understand how crazy and ignorant you sound. and if you had any respect for jazz tradition, you would never make such an ignorant ass comment. in fact, if you were in some circles and said that bullshit, you would probably get punched dead in the face! Young buck. Don't take this ass wuppin personally. Learn to respect the music & the tradition, then come talk to me. This lesson is free. You gotta pay for the next one, young buck.

  • @pmood1 I agree with that. It's just really a shame at how young Charlie Parker was when he went, which might be the reason why some people only know Confirmation or Moose the Mooch. Just a small sampling to know him by. I think the fact Miles was in Bird's band should be enough to make some people realize how influential he was/is and shut up.

  • @pmood1 MarkR1957 wasn't denying that Charlie Parker was an influence to modern music. He was just saying he enjoyed Cannonball more. I frankly agree with him; I like Cannonball's sound better than Parker's but I don't deny he is one of the biggest influences on jazz and modern music in general and I don't think MarkR1957 meant to either.

  • @neb985 If you read MarkR1957's original post, he begins his post with, "All this talk about Bird." , as if Bird was is some overrated player or something. Not only was that ignorant as hell, but was straight up disrespect to a true genius and master musician. As a professional jazz saxophonist who studied both Bird and Cannonball, I can tell you that Bird stands alone. Cannonball was a great saxophonist with a great sound. But, Bird, however was a "voice." He sound transcended the instrument.

  • @MarkR1957 I don't know about Cannonball. He was way over-rated. I like Kenny Gorelick much better- his sound is more appealing, he swings harder, and he's an overall a superior player.

  • @zappacrappa2 WTF?! You are out of your damn mind.

  • @keepitclenched No, I' am not. You, on the other hand are definitely out of your mind(or just plain stupid.)

My comment was sarcastic and was directed at what neb985 has written below.

Get a sense of humor, and then get a life :)

  • Cannonball comes across as a very intelligent person... And after reading a biography about Coltrane, he seems to have been an intellectual as well.... But in the music industry today what do we have???? Justin Beiber, Miley Cyrus, and other musical geniuses of the 21st century

  • greatest alto player of all time

  • Man the alto's like a toy in his meaty hands.

  • 2:28 might be the most superhuman I thing I think I've ever seen

  • That romping bass behind Nat.

  • Boy this guy could blow.

  • Great!

  • Nat can really scream on that horn, even before there were the mouthpieces to do so. They are both full of raw talent and the result of hard precidented work.

  • 2:20 cannonball is just enjoying nat's solo

  • is it just me or does oscar brown jr. seem high in this clip?

  • Fantastic video thank you very much

  • just no 2:20

  • Probley the best saxophonist to ever live

  • cannonball adderley IS the man..

  • Oh MOFO! Love thoses guys

  • amazing.... love cannonball's solo and the ending's great

  • espectacular!!!!!

  • Simon and Garfunkel borrowed the intro, and then some, from this song for their - We've Got A Groovy Thing Goin' .

  • cannonball is the shit!! inspiration to all who listen! :)

  • bello

  • amazing, we all miss that one soul brotha

  • is a shit

  • is the shit i think you mean

  • You said it guayabound. Nat is really swingin' in this one. That's an amazing high note he hit just before 2:30.

  • When I see sh#t like this, I say "thank god for youtube". Archiving history for all to see.

  • Agreed.

  • @guayabound

    Me Too!

  • @guayabound exactly yes!

  • @guayabound

    All the way with you!!

  • @guayabound --Pop music junkie my whole life....where has this outrageous music been??? A whole 'nother world! Tremendous!

  • grandioso!!!

  • where could i find a backing track for this?

  • still need one?

  • yes

  • I would really love one too!

  • "For our final number this evening, we'd like to play a pliece written by my brother, Nat.."

I thought that was funny... just adds to the amazingness of this video

  • lol i just noticed that! haha

i wish i could play this...

  • Romping right thru it.

  • I love the way cannonball enjoys his brother Nat solo

  • My jazzband played this song...so fun

  • Does the man get right to it or what?

  • Man I just love playing this song on my tenor and it is just so funky man this and Whitch Hunt are the only 2 songs I remember till know atleast

  • man, cannonball is a monster!!

  • does anyone know the changes to this killin tune?

  • I'm playing this in my combo at school here are the changes Fm7 for 6 bars

    Gm7b5 - C7b9 (one bar each)

    Fm7 for 4 bars

    F7 - Bb7 (one bar each); Db7 - C7b9 (2 beats each); Fm7 (one bar)

Check me out sometime im putting new videos up soon

  • So Am I

  • When Cannonball Adderley plays, it's like he's pushing 100,000 volts of raw power through the horn.

  • i believe you mean 100,000 watts of power (not volts) ^^ cannonball is awesomee

  • @spozalito seriously lots of air he's a beast

  • This is great stuff.

Real music that moves the soul.

    Thank you.

    George Vreeland Hill

  • Exactly. My thumb to you

  • i love this song!!

  • im just getting into jazz and its funny to read the comments on s ongs like these and compare it to the maturity level on popular non jazz songs recently released or lack thereof .

any recommendations on who else i should listen to if i like the cool guitar riffs in these songs?

  • Try to look for trios with Guitar-B3-Drums.

  • Hey saagarhazari, for great jazz guitar players check out Wes Montgomery, Tal Farlow, Grant Green and Kenny Burrell. Luck.

  • that piano chorus is like a multiple orgasm !!! xD rest in peace mr. zawinul!!!

  • Rest in peace? I think its more appropriate to say keep the groove moving. Death cannot get in the way of jazz like this.

  • yup either way i love it

  • someday you guys should hear todays big band version my jazz band plays it and it is fun especially fot trumpets

  • It's more fun for piano, with that extended piano vamping at the beginning - I love it.

  • Love it how Zawinul adds his comping and little bass grooves to his solo.

    Incredible interpretation of the piece!

  • CBall talks like he's a college professor, and then he starts wailing out on Work Song...I love it.

  • he was a professor before he became famous

  • yes i can see how you might say adderley is better then bird, but where do you think cannonball got a lot of his phrasing?

  • cannonball would be nowhere without bird.

  • exactly

  • Bird is Bird, and Cannonball is Cannonball. Cannonball is definitely a bebop stylist, but he has an energy (vibe) that is different from Bird's. There is also a video on youtube in which Cannonball names Bird has his great influence.

  • Just listen to these guys settle into the pocket and drive!

  • 2:50 now thats how shiny a piano should be!!!!

  • i think it was "thing" and one of his cousins playing along!!!!!! lol

  • dang NICE!!!

  • Dear! I never heard someone hitting THAT note at 2:28 with a cornet! Now thats some fine music! I wonder what Yusef Lateef is doing in this song. I would like to hear also a solo by him.

  • Nat had a killer solo man.

  • superb tonguing technique

  • Comment removed

  • thank you, you play on your toes all the time

  • yeah, just keep telling yourself that.

  • you sayin he doesn't enjoy it?

  • Lord, those brothers work SO WELL together! I can't get enough of this quartet. Gets even better when Lateef joins in.

  • *sextet

  • Is the pianist Joe Zawinul or Victor Feldman...they look the same..lol

  • Cannonball is "The new Bird"!!!!!!

  • You cannot replace The Bird, leave charlie parker out of this

  • but i agree with my sax teacher cannonball's tonguing technique is unparalleled, charlie parker's playing was amazing, but cannonball's tonguing is fucking genius

  • 1:16 I agree with you 100%

cannonball is woefully overshadowed by bird

  • 2:28 LOLOL is that like a harmonic on guitar?

  • why some people feel the urge to attack jazz? you don't like it? don't listen

  • Couldn't agree with you more man.

  • mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.....................

  • Cannonball is the biggest pimp to walk the face of this planet.

  • Well put, good sir.

  • god i love classical 50s jazzz

  • I could listen to this all day!

  • Cannonball is such a great musician. Just love his playing.

  • great video! what year was this recorded?

  • Hey people! Its that what TV is supposed to be or Im wrong? Those were the days of good taste and class.....God help us.

  • its not zawinall, thats the brit guy that played after they kicked barry harris.

  • That's Zawinul. Sounds like him too.

  • What happened with Barry Harris??

  • Barry and Nat had different musical philosophies but BH made some unreal music with the Adderly group. You can catch Barry's fab soloing on Youtube. What I recently learned was that Zawinal studied with Barry. BH masterclasses are the best!

  • That's some good information about Zawinul and Harris. I was JUST looking at the Harris stuff on YouTube. I was mentored by someone who learned from Harris, and I'm STILL working on that stuff from like 5 years ago man...

  • This is one of my favorite songs to improve to on my sax. I typically use the D Blues Scale.

  • 5:03 - Lighthouse Cafe. Nice.

  • SHEER GENIUS

  • P.S. A very big thank you for posting this :) xxx

  • No doubt of all the alto sax players he had imao the most unique and versatile approach.

I started out as a rock guitarist and ended up mastering all the elements of his playing and made them my own on sax & guitar.

He was imo way bluesier /funkier than Bird and tongued all his eighth notes unlike Bird ,Stitt, Woods etc. whose alto style was more fluid and legato.

The only other hornplayer who utilized this aggressive staccato phrasing was Michael Brecker who admitted Cannon as a big influence.

  • Bird laid the foundation for everyone. That's not opinion, that's fact. Adderly sounded alot like Bird when he first came out. He was considered Bird #2 - seriously. Bird put accents in places that were fun, and so did Adderly. Both were great. I don't play sax, but one of my teachers told me that Bird tongued more of his notes than people realize. You should go back and check out what he was doing - not just harmonically, but rhythmically.

  • All that being said - Adderly was one of the giants on alto. That's not just my opinion, it's fact. =)

Just to explain my whole rant...

If I'm a good student, it makes my teacher(s) look good. You don't compare the student to the teacher b/c you know that the teacher is really good. So it is with the Bird/ Adderly comparison.

  • there are no facts in music.

you can claim on many followers of bird to be Bird #2, like sonny stitt and sonny criss, and even jackie mclean and early eric dolphy.

plus the fact the bird is the most important is also false, since he didnt lay the foundation for any of his work.

it was art tatum and lester young who created parker and many others to creat each other.

i think that there are many great leaders to jazz which all had there impact - none more dominant then another.
