I used one of these at practice & ran it thru a 4X12 cab. Could not believe how much volume it could pump out for such a little thing. Even cut thru a loud drummer. Excellent amp indeed.
You made me buy one. I bought my first amp only last week, and took it back today - too many toys. Saw this and decided I wanted something that will do a couple of things really well, instead of 100 badly. Went back to the store and checked out the 10, but ordered the 15R. The AC30 comparison pushed me right over the edge. Very nice playing, lovely guitars, excellent quality videos. Your 'Keef' 3 way guitar comparo with the AC30 was pretty cool too.
@ChickenFaeces Depends on the style of music and how hard the drummer is hitting the skins... so it's not 100% perfect in all situations to play with a drummer.
Will the Pathfinder work as a good studio amp for getting great Byrds sounds in the home studio? Is this amp good enough for recording? I'm getting a Janglebox for my 12 String Electric and I'm wondering if the Pathfinder will be a good match for classic Byrds sound...
@Celticsaint777 I've only used this amp for recording purposes when it came to this video. The sound results are very good, so I would imagine that for recording this am is very good. As for the type of music you wish to play, this amp is very well suited.
On the basis on your demos of this amp (and a few other demos on YT not as good as yours), I ordered this amp last night. Thanks for tipping me off to this little jewel.
Thank you for this great demo. No pointless and distracted talking, but plenty of playing and showcasing the actual tone. You really did right by uploading this video at 720p, because this is the only one I've found that doesn't have that distinct "YouTube" tinniness to the sound quality. Really nice job on this, makes me wanna go out and grab one of these ASAP!
I have an 80s Fender M-80 and an EHX English Muff'n. The Muff'n doesn't sound too good on the Fender, and I've heard that the Vox takes pedals really well. Would the Muff'n sound better through the Vox?
Hey i watch This Video before i buy my pathfinder its really awesome I played with a ac30 and a ac15 the sound are very similar... Go for it people ;)
This is the way this amp sounds. Its that good but you can't change between sounds very well. You can get a good clean sound but kick in the boost and its way too loud and visa versa. I have a Muff Pedal and this amp sounds awesome through it.
@WeLovePizza2012 Tough question... it all comes down to what you prefer for your needs. I can tell you that most experienced musicians would buy a Pathfinder for the purpose of a practice amp (hence the reason I own one... great realistic tone at a low cost). Now, if you have just begun playing guitar or have only been playing for a short while, then the Frontman series of amps is perfect for you. They have all the basic features you need and have a good sound for a starter amp.
@WeLovePizza2012 Get the Pathfinder. The Fender 15r doesnt have tremlo and the Vox does. the trem is very warm and silky smooth! I used to own one of these amps and I still miss it. It has a real nice chimey sound for clean tones and can get dirty when you want it. I would run a shitload of pedals through mine and it sounded amazing. It sounds like a tube amp. Pretty amazing little amp I must say!
I own a Frontman 25 and a Vox Pathfinder. The VOX sounds way better but there are two things I like better about the Frontman. 1) Its has CD in which allows you to play jam tracks which the VOX doesn't have and
2) The Frontman has 2 equal channels. If you switch from the clean channel to the gain channel on the Frontman it sounds good. The Pathfinder only has one channel with a boost button. When you kick in the boost the volume triples. Get the VOX and a distortion pedal.
i went to the music store today thinking i was going to come home with a fender mustang but didnt like it. i tried a bunch of amps till i was blown away with this amp. not much for metal but thats what a peddle is for and also this is my practice/apartment amp since my mesa boogie is way to big and loud. this little amp rocks
@fsxolliefsx It is a 40+ year old Tele (made in 1968). I had to swap the rear pickup out for a Seymour Duncan because the original one had massive feedback.
@Rafal102able I've never tried one. I've been told they are like a more modern pathfinder with a few more features and a classic VOX sound. The idea behind the VR series was to attempt to make a low cost amp that was similar in sound and response to an AC15/30. If the amp in fact can come close to a VOX classic sound, then it should amazing.
@Rafal102able I've tried this amp before and it does the job. The only reason why I bought the Pathfinder instead was because the AC15vr was way too heavy to haul around. If it wasn't so heavy, I would've gotten that instead.
Why do people make demos of cheap amps with expensive guitars? Obviously, if I'm looking for a cheap 15 watt amp, I have a cheap guitar (Ibanez RG) My guitar would sound horrible with its pickups using this amp.
@manbearpig937 They are two very different amps. The Pathfinder is a simple "clean" amp where you can add effects pedals up front if you wish. The VT20+ is a modelling amp which means each amp model is somewhat of an effect itself and as well it has effects built in. In my opinion the VT20+ is a fun/creative amp whereas the Pathfinder is more for serious sound... if that makes any sense. Both are good amps.
I'm thinking about buying an AC30, but it's definitely too loud for practice, so I was looking for a smaller amp if I get the AC30. This demo confirmed that this is the practice amp that I'll get.
Great review! I own one myself and it´s an absolutely amazing amp! For my taste it kind of reacts like a tube amp, and I´ve played tube amps that sounded less good than this little pearl of sound...
This is an amazing sounding amp, and an amazing video. The glory of these guitars is really put on display when the right song is played on them, rather than in the vs. videos where they all play the same song and some sound downright ugly. I'm not a huge LP fan, but that first song after tremolo was set to 25% was gold. And I almost wet myself when I heard The Wind Cries Mary on that strat, because the awesome knob on that amp was turned up to 11 at that point.
I agree, best 15R demo on YT! this should be the standard procedure when demoing any other amp. Been loving my 15R since day one (3 years now), i once upgraded it to a 10" speaker and just recently converted it to a head unit... with a Blackheart 1x12 speaker cab on the side... it's definatly the best practice SS amp out there.
Excellent video, very enjoyable & nicely made. It certainly demonstrated the great tone of the Pathfinder 15R and there was some very nice playing in there too.
