  • The queen out and about does the - "Piping": long buzz with a few 4-6 short buzzes.... The one in the cell is "Quacking" 10 or more short ones at a lower pitch.

  • Nice catch..

  • Well, I think it's quite interesting to see how these bees communicate. I've been to an apiary before, but I've never been told about how queens are chosen within hives. I can definitely see an example of Survival of the Fittest going on. Needless to say, it's nice to see videos like this from an experienced beekeeper who's willing to educate people more about honeybees.

  • @Mesmerelda Sorry, a little late in responding, but thank you very much for your comment.

  • @acbees not a problem! Actually, clover honey is one of my favorite sweeteners for a cup of tea during the winter. =)

I haven't tried any other varieties though, so I might consider experimenting. So far, I've found clover honey adds a nice tangy flavor along with lemon juice in the tea. (Good for laryngitis and strep too) Maybe next time I go to that apiary, I'll see what other kinds are good.

  • We have a huge bees nest in the wall of our house in the UK. We can hear the queen piping for the second night in a row inside the wall. Also there's a lot of quacking sounds as a response. Apparently these are the virgin bees in the same hive. Very annoying when trying to sleep! Anyone know how long this will go on for, not all summer I hope!

  • aaah nice video! by an experienced behiver no doubt...how could you spot the queen amongst all! thanks!!

  • Thanks so much for this video. It was a relief to actually hear the SAME sounds that I had going on in my own hives a couple days ago. I hope I don't get a swarm but one hive has certainly superseded the queen because I saw the new one and heard her piping. I also heard the deeper tone in reply. Glad to hear your hive survived.

  • my body gets itchy when i see this xD

  • Never heard piping before. Thank you! Great clip of the old deadly Marco- Polo game.

  • Good show! Obviously experienced beekeeper, an observant & informative look at the hives & bee behavior. Faved by this current bee haver!

  • AWESOME video! You do a remarkable job at narrating! PLEASE more videos! :) I had never heard piping before.

  • Thank you very much for the comments. Spent last year getting used a new digital SLR photo camera. Made a hands free mount for the video camera over the winter, so plan to be posting more videos as the weather warms and will be spending more time in the hives. Hope your bees are doing well.

  • Glad to see they sorted them selves out.

  • Tell us what happened in the end please :)

  • I wish I could tell you for sure what the ending was, but ran out of tape and didn't have any more to reload. I've always carried an extra one since. Unfortunately my job didn't allow me to follow this hive as closely as I wished. I did manage to save the little swarm and 2 days later when I was able to check the hive again they were happy with their one virgin queen. Exactly what happened in those 2 days I'm not sure, but they worked it out well. The queen bred and survived the winter.

  • That's wonderful and the best I have heard of pipping.

  • That was cool!

  • Well narrated and nicely shot footage. Thanks a lot it was very interesting.

  • Wow, that is really fascinating! Thanks for sharing.

  • Remarkable video of piping. Well done! Now tell us the ending. Did the old queen dispatch the new one? Did the colony cast another swarm with mama? Don't leave us in suspense.
