This would have been Whitney's destiny... her mother had as good of a voice, if not better in many ways, given her age. You can see the lovely Whitney at the end, supporting her mom :( I think Whitney Houston's story should be taught in schools, because it is the saddest drug story ever. Crack IS whack!
@hherroyal05 I agree with you. I have all of Cissy's Gospel albums, I love "The Lord's My Shepherd"!! You can hear Whitney's timbre in her mom's voice...what a shame, what a shame!
Dayum she ends in whistle register using open falcetto! Dayum thats just amazing. poor Whitney, a mom like that is a tough act to follow but she did it anyway...
I know I'll get crucified for this, but I must speak my mind: I have never liked this woman's voice. In later years she lacked control. Her vibrato always seems to take over the song. Having said that, she did give us some serious vocals from that slide @ 1:40 through the end of the song. It got a bit sloppy toward the very end, but I think she deserves mad respect for her early work with Aretha, not to mention the fact that she birthed THE most brilliant vocalists of our time. Just my opinion.
@sfrgers You don't have to say Whitney Houston's mom in your narrative, as Cissy Houston holds that name all by herself! She has been a Powerhouse and Grammy Award winning vocalist her entire career, and long before Whitney came to the fore. :-) At age 77, she can still belt out Gospel.
@Whatujuant I remember when Cissy performed as the Sweet Inspirations & was doing backup vocals for Aretha Franklin. EVERYBODY was asking why she didn't just go "solo" way back then. Cissy also discovered oh so MANY other dynamite talents, like Luther Vandross .. she performed many commercial jingles. She is such an UNsung heroic artist! Her ENTIRE Family has talent, prior to Whitney's break-through.
Cissy Houston and that stifled vibrato is definitely an acquired taste. When she starts wailing @ 1:41 is where i said.... CHECK PLEASE! Lol. She definitely can blow but her voice is not for everyone.
Cissy and Nippy both can do falsetto notes, but it is whistle register for them. They both can sing in 5th and sixth octaves in head, mix, and superhead tones alone being both are coloraturas in their prime.
Women don't do falsetto? Lol. Male and female voices are the same, only the locations of bridges and natural range differ. A man can also sing in head voice, just like female opera singers do. But that is reasonably considered rubbish. :) And don't deny falsetto, even though it connects with head. Everybody has falsetto.
Yep Cissy and Whitney both had opera training thats why they can hit those flawless head, and superhead tones like no other. Plus they both have whistle tones which are falsetto for women at least!
How can SOUL be explained to a soul-less generation....You have to have SOUL to understand SOUL....we all have a soul but not everyone has SOUL...SOUL cannot be explained it can only be inflected in the moment...a song may be written one way but a feeling comes in that wasn't expected...a feeling that resonates and in that moment a different interpretation will come forth to help explain the emotion of a song...OH there is so much more to singing that has obviously been lost...This was SOUL...
Beautiful!
