Please do read the Qur'an, but I'd suggest to also read Arab History before and after Islam. You'll see how Islam made them civilized. And, when you read Qur'an just don't read few verses out of context; try to gauge real meaning but that requires some motivation and efforts which many of us cannot afford to give.
It is also in Qur'an... 'To kill a single innocent life is equivalent to killing whole Humanity; and saving one is equivalent to saving whole Humanity'(Qur'an 5:32)
