Just a note: Why would Norman Krump allow Rudy and Phyllis steal his invention? Didn't the writers think about that? or did they assume that it was not an issue because the invention would fail?
Good old, dependable Richard Decon, and Gomez on one show! What is not to like? Man I think I have lived in the best generation!!! So clean, so great and so much FUN. This is Classic TV my friends. Ahahahahahahah!
Isn't this just "Pruitts of Southampton" with a different supporting cast? I think they "re-tooled" in mid-season. Be cool if Pruitts came out on DVD, but I wonder who owns the rights?
@38ddkelly Yes, they went from Tuesday nights in 1966 to Friday nights in 1967, and from "The Pruitts of Southampton" to "The Phyllis Diller Show". I would like to purchase digidiscs of this show!
OH MY GOD I LOVE THE OLD CIGARETTE AD! So bizarre how they sold them to people back then... all about TASTE... and LOW TAR. Omg! is that Gomez Addams?
@djuri0612 What's disturbing to me is that I still remember the jingles, and advertising of cigarettes ended after 1970! John Astin was Gomez Addams a few years earlier. He also played a carpenter with Marty Ingles (Norman Krump in this show and absent in this episode) earlier in 1962, in "I'm Dickens and He's Fenster". He even made a serious appearance in "The Twilight Zone" in the episode, "A Hundred Yards over the Rim".
I forgot to mention that I'd never seen the pilot on this show, then The Pruitts of Southampton, until it appeared on YouTube. Unfortunately, it is no longer on YouTube. I hadn't seen the opening since 1967, which is quite a treat in itself. I vaguely remembered all the mishaps when Phyllis Pruitt tried to be a housewife!
Wow! What a fascinatin' "Blast From the Past"....I recall watching the show when I was a kid in the 60's...and later after I grew up I smoked LARKS. Thank heavens I quit smoking in '84. Thanks for posting this delightful clip! :)
I love John Astin, always have, but this show is retarded. I can't even figure out what this is about. It looks like they're giving John a lot of opportunities to act like Gomez...
I hadn't seen this show since 1967! I think our local ABC affiliate was having transmission problems at the time, so I never saw this show clearly. The black-and-white really brings back memories. We didn't get a colored set until October 1968.
Honestly, the same story about poor reception. We used to watch snow, and listen to the fuzzy audio! I NEVER got to really see this show until now. What a treat.
that really was the problem Phyllis really wasnt into physical comedy- but in the mid 60's the networks thought that Lucy- style schtick was the way to go. They did the same thing to Juliet Prowse. Those Lark ads are so stupid... now where's that Jeno pizza roll ad?
That Lark commercial is the one early SNL spoofed when they did the "show us your guns" commercial. I had forgotten what the original product was until now!
This series brings back some warm memories from early 1967. I saw this show the night of 20 January 1967 in Albany, NY, and enjoyed it immensely. That was also the same night I saw The Avengers for the first time!
Overall, this is a fun show, and should have had a longer run!
This episode, "My Sister-In-Law Phyllis", originally aired in color on March 17, 1967, under the sponsorship of Liggett & Myers {Lark, L&M Menthol Tall}, Procter & Gamble {Joy}, and Warner-Lambert {Listerine}.
I know this was The Pruitt's Of Southampton revamped but I like the Pruitt's theme better than this opening! Howcha do? Howch do? Howch do, my dear? So much better!
