Comedy and Tragedy are never far from each other. One of the greatest misconceptions is that Comdey and Tragedy are polar opposites, when in fact they're identical in many ways. In both, good characters are always flawed. In this film, for example, each an every character to come on screen is a buffoon in one way or another. Salieri, the villain, is the only exception (mostly), but his character is still funny in many ways because hes so dramatic and pathetic. Great characters, and great movie.
This is one of those few movies that gives you chills during the first few minutes... I mean, this is SO GOOD, it's almost disturbing among all the shit there is everywhere...
The first "do you know this" piece I recognized, as well as the second, however the third, I had no clue. I fail at life. *looks up a bunch of matzart and puts in on the watch later list*
Listen to the little tune Salieri is messing around with. Listen how he ends on a dominant chord without resolving it to the tonic. Feel how your ear wants to hear it redsolved, feel the light unease when it doesn't. This is how Salieri is introduced to us, a painful longing to meet resolution that he shall never meet. We know the core essence of the character without him speaking a word.
Its the little touches like that which make a great film.
@Chefodeath - your right...holding on for the last note to finalize this little medley in which, we are denied...such as he was denied too, of a gift.
@CtrolokDoncov We are disagreed then. Certainly it woul still be a good film without, but I earnestly believe that those little touches are neccesary to a great film.
It also makes it hard to remember that many liberties were taken to make this a dramatic biopic. Salieri was a fantastic composer and nowhere near the snake that he is portrayed as, here, but the wonderment of this fantastic film makes us want to disregard the truth and have this be our reality :).
@QuiteUnused that is funny, I never thought of that. I speak Italian and I just never thought of what that name meant. Thank you for your astute observation, Grazie veramente
The only thing that annoys me about this scene is the fact that the walls are thin enough that, despite all the hubbub outside, the priest can still hear the soft tinkering of piano keys within, and yet thick enough that, despite all the hubbub outside, silence reigns within the room.
I like the swiss guard in the back of the scene when young mozart is playing for the pope. Looks very old-timey. I mean I know the Swiss guard still protects the pope today but the scene in this movie really captures the time well.
Hearing Salieri speak about his life before Motzart is heart-braking, especially when he says "I liked myself", he was a hard-working man who had a passion and love for music and made good on his commitment to God whom he was very faithful to. Having seen the movie before, when he says "Until he came" I cringe knowing what happens next. Of course it's a fictitious story, but in the context of the film it's tragic.
@robotpanda77: I bet u prefer classic, but don't try to compare 2 kinds of different music-genres ridiculously like this. Why are hip hop, dance, trance... so popular nowaday, there has to be a reason. Just like the world keeps changing, people keeps growing up (-old), music keeps developing in many different kinds of way. Try to feel it instead of complaining about the "overrated" music, which you don't place value on.
The opera piece that Salieri plays is actually really really good. In fact, the "recognizable" & popular pieces of Mozart don't hold a candle to his opera works... that's what composers lived to write for in those days
WE do have greats of our day Edward Van Halen, Steve Vai, Joe Satrani, Paul Gilbert, Tony MacAlpine... If Mozart was alive he would make fun of them in public and then go to his room and listen to these guy's all night long. He may have partied with them and wrote with them who knows!
@MovieMaster0001 mozart was in fact an atheist, but I wouldn't go that far to say that this was a atheist movie, this just show how crazy people can go with jealousy and hatred ,"God is being unfair" is merely an excuse Salieri used to find his own sense of righteousness.
though what he said was true, being mediocrity sucks :(
You seem to make this claim completely out of thin air. Mozart by all accounts was very much a man of god. Go to google books, search for the book "The letters of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1769-1791)". Search the word "god" in the text. All you see is belief in God, and actually disdain for atheists. "Friends who have no religion cannot be long our friends." -Mozart to his father in regards to a faithless family. He also reveled in the death of the"ungodly Voltaire".
@robotpanda77 first of all, they are both musically inclined. second of all, the only difference is that mozart has autistic traits. so get off your high horse and come back to reality and realize that the music that mozart wrote back then was popular music, as is miley cyrus' music. just because you dont like her because she was hannah montana or she has a unique voice, doesnt mean she isnt good. you need to open your mind or youll spend your life being ignorant of good music.
"first of all, they are both musically inclined. second of all, the only difference is that mozart has autistic traits. so get off your high horse and come back to reality and realize that the music that mozart wrote back then was popular music, as is miley cyrus' music."
In any context, there is a superlative... something that rises above its peers. As such, of all the hopelessly moronic youtube comments I'll read today, I am supremely confident this will be by far the dumbest.
@Murchad99 hahaha.... i bet your the type of person who only listens to classical, romantic, and baroque music. and if so, the only thing you are doing is hurting yourself. IN ORDER TO APPRECIATE GOOD MUSIC, YOU HAVE TO KNOW THE LIMITS OF EACH GENRE. NOT JUST THE GENRE YOU JUST SO HAPPEN TO LIKE. and if you dont like miley cyrus, lady gaga, or kenny g, then do the world a favor and stop promoting them on every page you possibly can. because i honestly just think you're jealous of their talent.
@krydsewa ... You have no idea how many genres of music I listen to and enjoy, so your comment is aimless prattle. To review: you made a ridiculous statement that pop star performance artists selling an image would be Mozart's equivalent minus the "autistic traits", and I congratulated you on winning the daily moron award. If you can intelligently support your argument without without putting words in my mouth or telling me what I like, do so. Or... you can tell me how Beiber > Beethoven.
@Murchad99 i didnt put any words in your mouth. besides TO REVIEW: i never said that bieber > Beethoven. Maybe thats just you trying to find a way to actually come to terms with your denial. you are very close minded. you should attend tsu. all their band members are that. way
@robotpanda77 ladi gaga eminem lil wayne and others they sell theyr souls to the divol, looock eminem 666 lil wayne possesd ladigaga 666 iluminatii all and the yserve satan!belive i nJesus Christ The Son of Almighty God our Father!!!Viva Israel The Gods chosen people!!!Amin.
@robotpanda77 nowadays it's all backwards- which is why I teach my children the more enduring things in life, like the classics and classical music. Believe me, they are very happy and confident kids :) But you know, it means nothing without God first.
Oh of course I make sure! While no person or family is ever perfect, it is good to say at the end of every day, we can rest in peace, love, and happiness. Thanks to God it is so :)
@robotpanda77 Just think about how quickly these modern "musicians" will be forgotten, and how long Mozart has been & will be remembered for times to come... i bet a greater number of people are into Mozart today than Miley Cyrus even still!
I agree, I feel very unfair when someone compares Mozart to pop music stars as if modern stars pursue something similar as what Mozart did. Well movie is exaggerated, we never know whether Mozart could have been that hedonistic and effortless to create music.
For me, I give more respect to classical talents, for its hard effort and arduous time to reach the true maestro level.
Do you hear " prodigy" or "genius" from pop music sector? I'm afraid not....

@robotpanda77 those people are no different from him. its just that now, people prefer a different type of music.
krydsewa 11 months ago
@krydsewa Yeah, Miley Cyrus and Mozart were very alike. ALMOST LIKE TWINS.
robotpanda77 11 months ago
@robotpanda77 first of all, they are both musically inclined. second of all, the only difference is that mozart has autistic traits. so get off your high horse and come back to reality and realize that the music that mozart wrote back then was popular music, as is miley cyrus' music. just because you dont like her because she was hannah montana or she has a unique voice, doesnt mean she isnt good. you need to open your mind or youll spend your life being ignorant of good music.

NOT JUST THE GENRE YOU JUST SO HAPPEN TO LIKE. and if you dont like miley cyrus, lady gaga, or kenny g, then do the world a favor and stop promoting them on every page you possibly can. because i honestly just think you're jealous of their talent.
krydsewa 10 months ago
@krydsewa ... You have no idea how many genres of music I listen to and enjoy, so your comment is aimless prattle. To review: you made a ridiculous statement that pop star performance artists selling an image would be Mozart's equivalent minus the "autistic traits", and I congratulated you on winning the daily moron award. If you can intelligently support your argument without without putting words in my mouth or telling me what I like, do so. Or... you can tell me how Beiber > Beethoven.
Murchad99 10 months ago
@Murchad99 i didnt put any words in your mouth. besides TO REVIEW: i never said that bieber > Beethoven. Maybe thats just you trying to find a way to actually come to terms with your denial. you are very close minded. you should attend tsu. all their band members are that. way

@robotpanda77 nowadays it's all backwards- which is why I teach my children the more enduring things in life, like the classics and classical music. Believe me, they are very happy and confident kids :) But you know, it means nothing without God first.

@robotpanda77 Mozart looks a lot like Lady Gaga in this movie...
he wasn't "top gun" reaaaallly. wrote an opera about a brothel. Brilliant, yes. Stand-up gentleman, not so much.
osullivanbrandon 8 months ago in playlist Amadeus Mozart
@osullivanbrandon how dare you insult Mozart, Tom Hulce and Milos Forman by comparing this Mozart to lady shit shit !!!

Mozart was a musical genius!! Best ever!
